  • I went down to the Como Pleasure Grounds the other day. It’s funny how you can live almost right next to a place, and not realize how beautifull it is… This shot was taken under a beaurifull tree looking out towards the Train Bridge and the Marina. It is a 5xp HDR, pushing the limits a bit, but I think it gives the tree a real 3dimensional feel. Please also visit my website alexkess.com and my photoblog . Cheers, Alex

  • This is the second version of the image that I submitted four days ago. As I mentioned in the description of version #1, there were chances that I would still want to improve on it. Well I was not really satisfied with it and gave it another go. The long crossing through adolescence and into adulthood is not always an easy one. For many young people, it often seems like a neverending path, flooded with tears, a river of dark and murky waters ... The model in this shot is Abi, my RB friend Shelly’s beautiful daughter who is 15. She was photographed by her very talented mom Work uploaded for a challenge in the Collaborations group.               The challenge consisted in using one or both of the two / images on the left as a starting point to create something / new. monocotylidono   Shelly Hiebert               / I chose to use both images, but also to add a 3rd collaborator.   Vikram Franklin has kindly accepted to let me use this photo of a boat, and I used a bit of sky to improve on the new version as well. / I also added some textures of my own, as described below:   This bit of agitated water was used mostly over the path. I simply copied part of the water from the image below into a new document and distorted the perspective a bit.   One of my bad shots of a river. Nice to recycle into a texture! / Here is another photo of mine used as a texture:   I use this photo of the St-Lawrence river in the fog very often in my composites. This time, it was used in at least 7 layers with various blending modes and opacities.   I thought that the sky needed something and a crying moon was ideal. I used a photo of Jade, my 14-year old niece, added tears of blood and spherized it to create a moon. Played with the sky and shifted the thinning clouds to place the moon in a better position. Finally, I added a sheer layer of moon glow. • The constantly-changing patterns of the Ross Fountain in the Butchart Gardens, Victoria,Vancouver Island, British Columbia, serve as a lovely backdrop for the array of flowers and plants that line the walkway and viewpoint. The fountain was conceived and built by Ian Ross, grandson of Jenny Butchart, in the deepest part of the sunken garden. This was part of the original limestone quarry which had been worked out. The garden was started by Jenny in 1904. It’s a National Historic Site of Canada and has been visited by millions of people from all over the world. Taken July 12, 2009 with a Fuji S100FS camera.

  • The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore is a basilica in Venice, Italy designed by Andrea Palladio and located on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Facing the Bacino di San Marco, the church plays a central role in the panorama from the Piazzetta. The first church dedicated to Saint George dates to the 8-9th century. The Benedictine Monastery of San Giorgio was established in 982, when the doge Tribuno Memmo donated the whole island to a monk, Giovanni Morosini. The monks drained the island’s marshes next to the church to get the ground for building. The present church was begun in 1566, and was not entirely finished before the death of Palladio in 1580. The façade was continued by Vincenzo Scamozzi based on the original architect’s designs and completed in 1610. The church, sometimes designated as a basilica, is a prime example of Palladio’s architectural style, and one of the finest churches he designed. The bell tower, first built in 1467, fell in 1774; the reconstruction was completed in 1791. The Benedictine monks still officiate in the church. (Information supplied by Wikipedia). • Maligne Lake, in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, is one of the most famous and beautiful lakes to be found anywhere in the world. But to me, the array of mountains surrounding the lake were at least as beautiful, if not more so. They are all part of the Rocky Mountains. I suppose each of them has a name, but I have been unable to find such a list, and even if I did, matching the name to those in a photo would be hard. These two peaks were very prominent, and most of the afternoon were hidden by clouds, but for a short time the sun broke through and illuminated the slopes and cliffs in several places. / September 4,2009, Fuji S100FS camera.

  • When you think of flotsam and jetsam, what comes to mind? The seashore..coastlines,oceans,beaches..the normal places. / So it was a surprise when we arrived at Moraine Lake, in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The lake is one of the most famous in the Rocky Mountain park systems, and a long, long way from any seashore. Very high up, too! But here we found this scene of glacial lake, towering peaks, and a great array of logs which had accumulated at the end of the lake. Since this isn’t in a logging area, being in the heart of a huge National Park, we assumed they result from avalanches, rockslides, wind or ice storms. At any rate, they made an interesting variation to the usual photos we had seen of this beautiful lake. Sept. 5, 2009, FUJI S100FS camera. Featured in Flotsam and Jetsam /
