A beautiful treasure in the middle of Northern Oregon, the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day National Monument is eerily quiet, serene, and amazingly colorful.

These hills are alive with color and give the perception of a velvet like texture when in fact they are made up of hard clay and shale formed millions of years ago when the area was more tropical in nature. The 200-mm lens used here reveals the beautiful patterns and textures of the area formations. The area is riddled with ancient fossils as well.
Another example of the beauty that is the Painted hills. This anomaly stands out to make this composition quite unique. And yes this is really called ” Red Hill ” it’s a mere 1/4 mile from the main area I posted earlier.
