Shot with flash at the Gentoo breeding colony at Port Charcot. Pictured is a maverick adolescent in an ecstatic display, nesting adults and a bonding ritual between a breeding pair. The male in the foreground has just delivered another stone for the nest and after his mates approval they nuzzle and crow together.
Gentoo penguins in Antarctica, Feb 2008
With winter approaching and the pack ice thickening it becomes impossible for penguins to hunt from shore. This Gentoo will soon join his extended family on the edge of the pack hunting for fish and krill until the Spring thaw. / Canon 5D Canon 100-400mm at 135mm 1/750 sec with off camera flash fast sync.

I know it’s hard to believe but the penguin on the left was not part of the penguin gang! apparently he smelt of the wrong sort of fish… hard to believe I know but when it comes down to it Penguins just are fussy little birds who take every opportunity to poke fun at each others shortcomings.
These guys are so cute & in the water they are an absolute delight to watch. This dapper little fellow was posing nicely on his rock, so he got snapped ;-) The Gentoo (jen-TOO) penguin has the widest range of distribution of any penguin. However, the most significant populations are concentrated on the Antarctic Peninsula and sub-antarctic islands. Members of the brush-tailed genus (Pygoscelis) which includes the Adelies and the Chinstraps. They are distinguished from the smaller Adelie and Chinstrap species by their bright red-orange bills, conspicuous white patches behind their eyes & stiff tail feathers that stick out prominently when walking or swimming. Gentoo populations have suffered over the last century from human depredation and loss of habitat but appear to be stabilizing recently due to increased conservation efforts.

The Gentoo Penguin is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. Temperatures on the frozen continent are rising five times faster than the global average due to the unprecedented rate of climate change, pushing four species perilously close to extinction. Warmer temperatures are forcing penguins to raise their young on increasingly thinner and more precarious ice floes, while stronger winds mean many eggs and chicks are being blown away from their parents before they are able to survive on their own. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice destroys nesting sites and reduces vital food sources, such as krill.
