Acrylic on linen covered wood panel. The subject of the painting is the artist’s grandson, Jacob at the end of a long walk. Although the sun was setting, Jake was not ready to return home. In a pause at the school yard, the fixed glimpse of a small boy on the outside of a fence amid the day’s lengthening shadows brought to mind in an instance unbidden thoughts of threats and barriers that must be encontered by a young life unfolding. The lingering ghost of those unwanted thoughts gave rise to this painting.
Watercolor painting on Arches 300 HP 22×30 inches Wendel’s Barbershop in Lexington, Virginia can count the wide cross section of the town’s male population as customers. With that and the cadets of the Virginia Military Institute and the students at Washington and Lee, Wendel stays quite engaged except for a slight break in the morning when he takes his own chair and reads the paper. Always gracious he agreed to sit for me on one of those occasions; and I tried to record him as the class act and gentleman that he is known by all to be.

Basho, pseudonym of Matsuo Munefusa (1644-94), Japanese poet, was considered the finest writer of Japanese Haiku during the formative years of the genre. Born into a samurai family prominent among nobility, Basho rejected that world and became a wanderer, studying Zen, history, and classical Chinese poetry, living in blissful poverty under a modest patronage and from donations by his many students. From 1667 he lived in Edo (now Tokyo), where he began to compose Haiku. I’m a wanderer / So let that be my name – / The first winter rain This painting is dedicated to Basho and his wonderful work.
