  • There’s a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line. Oscar Levant See my full portfolio here Shop Art by Category and/or Series Guide to the Silver Lining shirts

  • Sometimes there is humanity within abstraction. I’m not sure the proper way to put it, but this, of all my art, bears my humanity. It may seem odd that I consider this myself as other… but the it no rule dictating if other must be human, fantastical, or pure energy upon paper. I consider this to be myself, simply ripped apart and dug into deeply. / This may look like nothing, but it actually was one of the most intensive experiences I’ve had in the visual arts. I find a bit of direction and even peace in it, though its colors are those of anger and melancholy. I chose to post it because I believe in the soul of a work of art, and know for sure that souls, those not inborn, must develop by rubbing off of another through regular interaction – something can be the most magnificent picture/painting in the world, but it is as empty as laser-pigment on bleached printer paper if it came in a flash… likewise the worst image imaginable may have a deepness to shame the ocean if it was danced with for weeks, months, years… there is notable merit in beauty alone, sure, but a soul is often required to speak freely to others.

  • Don’t have a t-shirt ready to celebrate Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday? Then get your special, exclusive limited-edition tshirt to wear for a whole year! Wear this and pay homage to the man who’s genius shed so much light on the darkness of ignorance. His grand notion was the gradual evolution over long periods of time by the natural selection of those varieties of an organism slightly better adapted to the environment (via random genetic mutation) and hence more likely to produce descendants. Combined with the discoveries of the cellular and molecular basis of genetics, Darwin’s theory of evolution has become the dominant unifying concept of modern biology. The explanatory power of Darwin’s idea has even caused geneticist and evolutionary biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky to remark “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution”. For those interested, part of my design uses an image of Charles Darwin, printed as a satirical caricature in ‘The Hornet’ magazine in 1871. I thought it suitably ironic considering such common utterances of the time as “Descended from the apes? My dear, let us hope that it is not true, but if it is, let us pray that it does not become widely known” (wife of the Bishop of Worcester). FOR THE LOVE OF SCIENCE AND NATURAL HISTORY, I AM SELLING THIS TEE WITHOUT ANY MARKUP.

  • A comic genius & a pretty neat T-shirt too even if I do say so myself. / Below another loveable pair from the same era, /

  • Inspired by one of my all time favorite artists…..Edward Gorey. /

  • 7 Shape Vector drawn by hand from scratch in Xara Xtreme. One of my all time heroes. Sadly missed comedy genius. More about Bill Hicks / —— /

  • Hunter Thompson should really require no introduction. Quite simply put, he was THE man. But, if you don’t already know him, I guess now you do. The day the news of his apparent suicide broke was the first time a ‘celebrity’ death ever hit me like a sack of bricks. The only other one to’ve effected me in a similar way was that of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (Who, I imagine, will be another subject of mine, soon enough.) This man was and is one of my go-to guys, one of my all-time heroes in life. Another one-hour portrait. Oils on 8” x 10” canvas panel.

  • I was walking past the Steinway Store in New York City yesterday and was taken by the piano being built. So I snapped a few shots and it got me thinking. My grandfather was a self-taught ragtime piano player. You’d hum a tune and he’d play it. Same with my father and his four sisters. From the time I was 5 there was always a piano in my home. All this thinking about pianos and piano players led me to think about Art Tatum. Blind in one eye and partially blind in the other, Art Tatum exemplified genius. No one, my da would say could grace the keys like Art Tatum. He was the first to tell me what was often spoken when Tatum played, “God’s in the room.” This one’s for my da, who’s keeping time with Art Tatum in heaven. • Georgia O’Keeffe wrote, ””Nobody sees a flower – really – it is so small it takes time – we haven’t time – and to see takes time, like having a friend takes time.” I think this is a significant quality of genius: the capacity and the will to look deeply at the ordinary, imagine it as other, and compose a re-presentation that allows the viewer/listener/reader to feel other. • Your Early Creative Genius

A couple of days ago I was reading RedBubble’s first ever journal post. The opening paragraphs really struck me: People are inherently creative. Deep down, most of us love to come up with new ideas, express who we are, or take a different perspective on the world around us. This is particularly true of children. Remember chalk on the footpath, crayon on the walls, or a painting stuck proudly to the fridge with a magnet. Kids love stories, they love learning about new things, they ask obvious yet somehow overlooked questions. So why don’t many of us focus on our creative interests as adults? Is there something about the process of growing up that changes us, that convinces us to be serious and sensible? Do we lose the ability to be creative? Or does it just get buried amidst the responsibilities, worries and priorities of adult life? What is it that makes being a creative child easier than being a creative adult? Time constraints? That voice in your head that makes you doubt things about half way through a creative project, or the fact that you have a client and a deadline rather than a sunny afternoon and no responsibilities. Most importantly, is it possible to recapture that ease and enjoyment that we experienced when there was no pressure and all the time in the world? / For those who have some extra time over the long weekend, here’s a project: Step 1: Dust off those old boxes (or in my case, call the other side of the world and ask Mum if she knows how to use the scanner) and dig out some of your first masterpieces. We’d love to see early signs of your creative genius so if you’d be happy to share, pop them in a journal with a short description. / / Step 2: Make some time this weekend to do something creative just for pure enjoyment. Imagine no one else will ever see it … and if possible, make a bit of a mess. It’s good for the soul. For your entertainment, Rhana and I have dug out some of our early creative works. I was apparently quite the poet and Rhana was highly skilled in precision colouring. It also seems there was no little voice of doubt in my head telling me that a poem about chicken wings might just be a rubbish idea. Enjoy! Nat

  • 2008, Acrylic on Canvas, 24” x 18” Leonardo DaVinci must have been quite the character to have at a dinner party. I’m sure his conversations sparked some rather awkward moments as well, simply because his way of thinking was different than that of the general population. Hmmm… maybe a case of Aspergers Syndrome? Some would probably call him “weird”; others “genius”. Either way, he was one of the most influential people in history. And his most famous work, The Vitruvian Man, is in essence a measuring tool for the human form. Applied to sheep, it sets a standard of proportions and silliness, which is why Baaa Vinci is the painting which begins by Sheep Incognito book. I used earthy, old-world colors to give it the aged feel of antique paper. My favorite part is the the paunchy belly of this guy – quite contrary to the old fashioned, six-pack that DaVinci’s guy had. Meet the new beauty standard. I’ve been asked what the writing at the top of the painting means. Well, in true sheep manner they’ve followed the master and wrote Baaah, baaah, baaah maaah, maaah baaahbabamah, baaamaaah, in mirrored writing there…. It must be something about the hidden agenda of Sheep Incognito.
