This was a photo of a Gemsbok that I has taken 2 months ago while at a Florida Preserve. I’ve taken the original photo and have merged it with a different background. One that I’ve photographed and used in a few of my other pieces and then applied a soft orton effect with PS. Some Info / Gemsbok have an average shoulder height of four feet and can weigh up to 450 pounds. Gemsbok live in herds of about 10-40 animals, which consist of a dominant male, a few non-dominant males, and females. They often live in association with zebras, gazelles or other antelopes. The female’s horns may be curved but the male’s are thicker and parallel. Male gemsbok have been known to gore attacking lions with their horns. The Gemsbok is mainly a grazer, feeding mainly on the sparse dry desert grasses. If grass is not available they will browse and dig for roots. They will drink water if available from waterholes and streams but can survive days or even weeks without it. Gemsbok feed early in the morning, late in the afternoon and on moonlit nights when the water content of the plants are at their highest. They will also eat wild melons and such for their water content.

An Oryx in the dunes – Namib Desert, Namibia
-
My choice for Africa’s handsomest antelope, the Oryx (Gemsbok in Afrikaans) is one of the few large mammals that can tolerate the Namib Desert’s extreme conditions. It’s face looks like a delicate watercolor. The dunes at Sossusvlei are part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park – the largest park in Namibia and, in fact, the largest park in Africa.

Gemsbok oryx feeding in Samburu, Kenya

Oryx/ Gemboks superb survivors in the Namib Desert. The name is derived from the Dutch name of the male chamois, Gemsbok. Although there are some superficial similarities in appearance (especially in the colour of the face area), the chamois and the oryx are not related. There are two types of gemsbok: a northern and southern variety. The northern gemsboks have black-fringed ears while the southern ones have longer horns and more rounded ears. Gemsbok are mainly desert-dwelling and do not depend on drinking to supply their physiological water needs. African wildlife safaris with Wild at Heart Safaris © Mark Hannaford
