Geisha on a Mission in the city of Gion The training involved in becoming a Geisha is very rigorous, and because of this the numbers of Geisha are declining. Few young women in today’s society are willing to devote themselves to such demanding training. To become a Geisha, if accepted, a young girl must go through an apprenticeship that involves living with a head Geisha. This training period takes five to six years. During this time, the Geisha trainee must help with the chores and the running of the house, learn customs and social skills, and take music and dance lessons. After about six months, the trainee Geisha is called a maiko girl, and accompanies a Geisha on her appointments in order to become acquainted with customers. At about age 20, the maiko must make the decision to become a full-fledged Geisha or not. If a girl wishes to marry she cannot become a Geisha. This photo was taken on the streets of Gion deep within Kyoto at around 4pm, which is when Geshas finish their hours-long makeup and preparation routine and head over to the evening’s assignment. A surrealistic piece I did ages ago. It’s possibly the illustration I’m most proud of. I had put a lot of time and effort developing this style for myself. It borrows aspects of anime movie style illustration from movies such as – Ghost in the shell and Patlabor, aswell as every Hayao Miyazaki film. It was hand drawn. I started with the Geisha then added the other elements separately similarly to how an animator might build up a scene. Detail:

/ (Mocha timber frame/off white matt/medium size) / Greeting Card hand drawn on paper / digital painting Legend of Little Geisha / art and story by K Taylor (4/09) In the village of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan lived a poor couple who wove and carved for a living. The couple had no real possessions but were content with the beauty of the mountains and the sea surrounding them, and happy to be together. The only thing they wished for and did not yet have, was a child to call their own. One day, an ancient crone visited their home and as always, the couple offered their hospitality, gave her rice cakes and sake to warm her belly. The old crone, in return for their kindness, bestowed upon the couple the ability to have a girl child. The child grew from a seed into a strong and beautiful young woman, glowing with pride and joy, she was the delight of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan, and many young suitors came to visit and pay her homage. But as is the way with old crones, you can never quite trust them to do you a favour without some twist in the tale. Unfortunately, the seed from which the child grew, began to sprout roots, and she was bound to the earth. In time the beautiful young girl became a majestic tree and all the birds from near and far came to perch and nest in her branches, she gave them shelter from the wind and rain, and everyone who knew the legend realised the tree was actually the Little Geisha. / here’s the drawing (above) prior to being digitally coloured
