Green day gecko climbing a banana leaf in Hawaii. Four little feet sliding from leaf to leaf; they can stick so strongly to surfaces, so much so that geckos can hang upside-down from a single toe. Scientists have long been fascinated by gecko feet, and in year 2002, uncovered this remarkable secret: their precious toes adhere effortlessly to any surface through millions of nanoscale hairy structures that interact only slightly at the molecular level. It is the millions of these interactions that make their four feet capable of supporting the weight of a small child.

FINALIST IN THE NOVEMBER + DECEMBER 2008 NATURAL DEVELOPMENTS GROUP. This Thick-tailed gecko Underwoodisaurus milii was found during hand searches in spinifex in western NSW. We enjoyed his company during this early morning photo shoot. This species is reasonably common, in particular, through the granite outcrops of the great dividing range.
