  • the problem with gay people

Got your attention? The problem is, I haven’t got one, but other people do. As I was growing up, my mum said “if you are gay, it doesn’t matter, I love you” so many times I asked her if she wanted me to be gay. (I’m not) I grew up hearing about the conflict other people had, in other countries, with a mother who would do what she could to help (via Amnesty International). The old ‘best friend’ story-one of my oldest friend, who’s known me since she was two, finally came out a few years ago. We asked her what took her, cos we all knew: even in the most accepting environments, it’s not easy. I knew from the first 5minutes of meeting the BF’s mate (on the goldcoast last year) he was fully homophobic. I promptly told him if he went on about it anymore, I’d assume he was gay. Protest, protest. He protests too much. Then, the BF’s mate was down on the weekend. For the week. And again, proceeded to go on about it. To make jokes. (amongst the swearing, shopping sprees to Armani, and clouds of deodorant. Then hours on xbox). I’d had it up to here. I told him in no uncertain terms that people I love are gay, friends and family. They may not be here now, but I can’t laugh at jokes like that, because if they were there, I’d be insulting them, and he was insulting me by talking like that about gay people. That here in Sydney, people are tolerant of gay people, and don’t make a big issue about it. And I won’t let him be around my friends, hearing him talk like that. Of course, he has no ability to reply here. He promises he’s joking and wouldn’t say those things around anyone else. He knows it’s not appropriate. (not around me either buddy) I’m doing the parent-child thing telling him off. But you know what? I just read in the paper a guy and his partner (who I went to school with) have been bashed. His partner needed surgery, and will never look the same. The police said there’s not much they can do. They had to fight to get the CCTV footage, before it’s written over. The thieves took their phones and have called his mum, telling him they’ve killed her son. That is sick. Did you know something like 90% of bashings are sexuality related? That figure may not be 100% accurate. All that matters is that it’s happened to two people too many. If the police’s attitude is like that, many more too many. We as artists have a voice, and t-shirts to raise awareness, to design images and slogans that promote goodness in the world. I’m saddened that violent images perpetuate. That violence has been cool. Call me a hippy, but though love is sometimes seems harder. but it’s worth the effort. It takes effort. but it actually makes our lives better. There is another person to love, rather than hate in our world. Ironically, (as I say ‘tolerate’) I couldn’t stay at home with a person speaking like that in the house. I do not tolerate that talk. I told him what I’d thought, and out of respect to the BF, didn’t kick him out-it was good timing for me to take a holiday somewhere else. I think that sent the message, despite the fact I didn’t change his opinion (I can’t make him). I’m not sure what else to say, but if you have a problem with gay people, get over it. If you can’t quite do that, go play football, hit a punching bag or rev your car that little bit louder. We know you’re macho enough. We’d probably like you anyways, if you weren’t. Seriously, that behaviour is better than hurting someone we love. Knowing that, maybe we can laugh about how silly those people were, to once behave like that, and enjoy a better reality. That includes you.

I have great news. This is a national effort, not just in California. Help overturn Prop 8, the ban on Gay marriage. This has also passed in Arizona & Florida! It will be held at your “CITY HALL” Please visit Join The Impact for more information and locations in your state and help us fight against DISCRIMINATION AND INEQUALITY!!! Protest Location By State Here Just to name a few: California – San Diego | Los Angeles | Bakersfield | Sacramento | San Francisco | San Jose | Moreno Valley Colorado – Denver; Iowa – Des Moines | Iowa City; Florida – Jacksonville | Miami | Orlando; Massachusetts – Boston | Northampton; New York – Syracuse | Albany | New York City; Utah – Salt Lake City; New Jersey – Newark; Arizona – Phoenix They have put together a NATIONAL PROTEST and start a mobilized movement for equality! When we all come together as one voice on November 15th, we will show the nation that we can do more than just talk, we can act! We won’t solve everything in one protest, but we will fuel the fire to a conversation that can not be silenced! If we stop talking about equality for all, then we will lose the battle. If we allow others to stop talking about it, then we will lose. Hate is not the lack of love, it’s the fear of that which we do not know. This protest along with many others gives us the chance to build on the conversation and educate the masses. It’s very simple: Infiltrate, Educate, and STOP HATE! HATERS NOT WELCOMED!!! JOIN ME :) / Come on Ellen, it has your name all over it lolGet you camera out and go to NEWARK!!!

  • The Truthbary
    by John Douglas

    “I wasn’t in bad way…but I was in a bad way mentally.” / Cha…

“I wasn’t in bad way…but I was in a bad way mentally.” / Chad Witt / The Truthbary Chad Witt (1971 – 2000) was an American gay artist, fascinated by minimalism, detail and the mundane. He had synesthesia and bi-polar disorder. While suffering a particularly savage bout of depression he took his own life in September 2000. We e-met in 1996, and for the next four years maintained an intense internet friendship – discussing art; collaborating on projects and sending each other tapes talking on a range of topics. Chad would often take images I had sent and ‘treat’ them. In early 2000 I was thrilled to curate a Sydney showing of Chad’s conceptual sculpture Darlo Homo, Chad’s first exhibit in Australia and the last public showing of Chad’s art while alive. The Truthbary documents some of the images and poetry Chad Witt created during our four-year friendship, many of the images are from Chad’s ‘treated’ versions of original photography of mine. Chad’s own voice narrates snippets about himself, and one of his musical compositions provides the soundtrack. The film is in a minimalist style in keeping with Chad’s own tastes. Three of Chad’s images in the film have been further ‘treated’ by me, making The Truthbary our final collaboration. It was screened at the Sydney Squatfest Film Festival in 2008. The Truthbary is intended as a companion piece to minimal chad Redbubble Chad

Well folks, I have jumped into the deep end and made my first photography book. PEOPLE – A Candid Study in Black and White was a bit of a brain strain to put together but the instructions are fairly easy to follow. To some the books may be a bit pricey but I have seen the results in a book made by a camera club friend and feel the price is well worth it. Enjoy! GB / Dennis PS: All proceeds go into my bank account so I can buy bigger and better photographic equipment so please help the cause. 8-)

18-01-09 Oh dear! Oh dear! Oh dear! My much loved Fuji S9600, (affectionately known as the Lady Fuji), has developed what I suspect is a Circuitry Problem. With no warning after making about four or five shots when next I turned the camera on it bleeped, flashed on for a split second then turned itself off. It does this every time I attempt to turn it on. I changed batteries twice but the problem persists. The strange thing is that with either set of batteries while the camera keeps turning itself off, I have full operation in the Preview Mode. I can’t contact Fuji Australia until business hours on Monday so do any fellow Fuji fans out there have an ideas as to what the problem may be? Milady Fuji and I await any replies with bated breath. Hey everyone Thanks for everyone who uploaded an image to the This Is Oz site site – thankyou thankyou.Have a look and see if you recognise anyone. We’ve had over 150 people upload their image with a message in a week and that’s brilliant – police, politicians, musicans, actors, dancers, parents, teachers, families – all ages, all genders, and diverse cultural backgrounds. Homophobia affects everyone and everyday in Australia people are attacked, bashed and hurt for loving people of the same sex. Homophobia and hate crime is my job…I have also been bashed for holding my partner’s hand in a busy public shopping mall. Around the world the effects can be even worse. State sanctioned exucution, violent police, silence, abuse, intimidation, discrimination and harrassment. We need your support to stop it…you can all do something…homophobia also affects you. Go here to be part of the event. If you’d like to see the amazing work that other countries are doing for the International Day Against Homophobia go here Or here, this is an inspiration Add your voice…thanks Peace / Robert .)

15-12-09 big…..Big…..BIg…..BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!! I recently received an email from a businessman in my town who said he had been admiring my B&W work here on RB and that he wanted 16 large prints to be permanently displayed in pairs in the foyers and gymnasium of Coast Apartments, a luxury apartment complex he and his partner are developing in town. / The order is for fourteen 40cm x 60cm (16”x24”) and two 40cm x 80cm (16”x32”) images all with a 10cm (4”) wide black border, making the overall size for printing to be 60cm x 80cm (24”x32”) and 60cm x 100cm (24”x40”) respectively. / He and his wife chose photographs of Port Macquarie (PM) from my BubbleSite and requested that I convert them to B&W. / As my database only contains 20cm x 30cm (8”x12”) images and upsizing to the required dimensions was pushing the image quality, I had to rework most of the photographs from my original RAW files and as only one of the photographs chosen was already in B&W then all others had to be converted. Surprisingly, ‘Lone Surfer’, that I made years ago with my old Fuji S5500 4Mp camera handled the resizing quite well. / The collection has been printed by Momentz and were mounted, matted and framed by Mystic Blue, both local businesses. The whole project was a real PM affair. / We struck a good deal with a fair price that comes in verrrrry handy at this time of year. / The photographs chosen by the clients are: 1. Alma Doepel with Clouds / 2. Autumn Sail Past Tacking Point Light / 3. Big Southerly Coming / 4. Contemplation & Perambulation / 5. Fishermen All / 6. Fishing is for the Birds / 7. Lone Surfer #2 / 8. Rock Fishermen #2 / 9. Stormbird / 10. Sunset Moorings / 11. Tacking Point from Sea Acres / 12. The Akuna Cones Home / 13. Under the Arch / 14. Winter Beach Walk / 15. Winter Sunset / 16. You’re Not Going Out in That! / My sincerest, warmest thanks to Graeme and Johanne from Coast Apartments and to all on RB who have appreciated and supported these works and helped keep my dream alive. Enjoy! GB and my best wishes of the Season to all. / Dennis

30-12-09 Abso-bloomin-lutely Phantasmagorically Good News!!!!!!!!!! That ‘on-loan’ Canon EOS D60 camera and its associated Canon 28-135 USM IR Lens I have been using since my dear departed Milady Fuji (S9600) suffered death by salt water, is now / ALL MINE!!!!!!!!!! It is all thanks to the generosity and friendship of my Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friend Greg Brayley and the love and generosity of my youngest Son Michael. My mate Greg rang me two days before Christmas and told me to consider the camera as a Christmas present and the very next day I received a Christmas card from young Michael containing not only well wishes but a Money Order for enough dough to cover the cost of buying the lens from Greg. I cannot find the words to fully describe my feelings of gratitude and admiration for these two men. I am over the moon and forever in their debt. Thus endeth Dennis’ Fuji bridge camera era and thus beginneth his Canon DSLR era. Wotta blast eh?! GB all. / Dennis
