  • THE SUBJECT: / The sailing ship is a topsail schooner, the Alma Doepel. She and the bollard are about the same age – just over 100yo. / The ship has been well preserved and still sails while the bollard is slowly decaying. / 2009: Sadly the owners have sent Alma to Melbourne and we may never see her in Port again. THE LOCATION: / They both lie on the south bank of the Hastings River in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING OF ‘Old Bollard and Alma Doepel’: / I had walked past the old bollard many time, checking out all angles and light to see if there was a shot in it. Then one day I knelt down to get a closer look at the details, looked downstream and saw the ship moored in the background and thought, “There’s my shot!” / Fuji S5500: High resolution jpg, f/3 @ 1/340, ISO100, Hand held. / Photoshop CS Enjoy! • THE SUBJECT: / A view of Bago Bluff with an old hay shed chock full of golden hay dominating the foreground. THE LOCATION: / Photographed from Beechwood Road, Beechwood, NSW, Australia, late on a winter’s afternoon. THE MAKING of ‘Bago Bluff and the Old Tin Shed’: / Whenever I am in the vicinity of Bago Bluff I am always on the lookout for a possible shot with a “difference” so when I saw the old hay shed bathed in golden light with the bluff in the background I just HAD to nail this one! / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/11 @ 1/200sec, ISO80, Tripod, Timer. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. • THE SUBJECT: / A fine specimen of Omphalotus nidiformis (Ghost Fungus) and his tiny companion, a handsome Fungus Gnat of the species Sciarid. / The fungus is so named due to its ability to emanate a green glow on moonlit nights, casting enough light to read by. THE LOCATION: / Photographed off the track in the Kattang Nature Reserve , Dunbogan , NSW, New South Wales, Australia, on a winter afternoon. • You are looking at a site that must have made many men shudder. It is the entrance of Trial Bay Gaol, (that’s Jail for our North American cousins), in the Arakoon National Park at http://fddp.theage.com.au/news/New-South-Wales/South-West-Rocks/2005/02/17/1108500198955.html , between Port Macquarie and Coff’s Harbour , NSW, Australia. “Trial Bay Gaol was commenced in 1877 as an experiment in penal reform. It was constructed of locally quarried pink and grey granite with the first wing being completed in 1886 and completed in 1890. / It was closed in 1903 but reopened in 1915 to hold internees from Germany as a result of World War I, where they were allowed out onto the beaches during the day but locked up at night. / Trial Bay Gaol now houses a museum that covers the history of the gaol and is well worth the visit when you are in the area.” Fuji S5500: f/9 @ 1/75sec: ISO100, Hand held. / Photoshop CS. • This rather weird looking Aussie native is a fine specimen of Lambertia formosa (Mountain Devil). It was found and photographed on a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friend’s property at Kundabung, between Port Macquarie and Kempsey, NSW, Australia, on a lovely winter day. • I was sitting on my usual veranda seat at the Créma Espresso Bar, (the best caffeine oasis in town) and as nothing was happening along then Town Green or on the Hastings River in Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia, I decided to do a little close-up abstract work with B&W in mind, so here is the result. The subject is the press-stud on my lens filter container, if you were wondering and making this shot was a good exercise in composition and selective focusing. Fuji S5500: f/2.8 @ 1/90sec, Macro, -1 EC, Hand held with elbows propped on table. / Light room & Photoshop CS3. • Those misty and wet mountains is where we were headed! THE SUBJECT: / A wet, misty and moody Australian landscape with eye catching coloured patches of winter grass in the paddocks. THE LOCATION: / Photographed along the road to the Willi Willi National Park , up in the mountains far west of Kempsey, NSW, Australia on a very wet and chilly winter day. THE MAKING of ‘Misty Mountain #2’: / I had not realised the difficulty in photographing misty scenes such as this but I soon discovered that even though the light was very low there was still a big problem with the dynamic range due to the clouds. This was actually the first of the series I made and I used Aperture Priority which gave me the slow Shutter Speed. Hand held but with the camera supported on a rear view mirror. / Even though few photographs were made throughout the day due to the weather and time of year, six of us in two 4WDs had a great day out in the bush communing with nature. / One bloke, who has travelled 250,000Km in such road conditions in his 4WD had never had a mishap until the last two times we were out in the wilds. Last time it was a fuel line fracture and a flat tyre. This time it was another fuel line fracture! / Fuji S9600: RAW, f/11 @ 1/60sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • Those misty and wet mountains is where we were headed! THE SUBJECT: / A wet, misty and moody Australian landscape, including my Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mate Rod (fotoman66). / A candid AND a landscape! THE LOCATION: / Photographed along the road to the Willi Willi National Park , up in the mountains far west of Kempsey, NSW, Australia on a very wet and chilly winter day. • This foul weather photograph was made at a café on the shores of Wallis Lake, in the Myall Lakes system, between Newcastle and Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a most grey, overcast and damp summer day. What caught my eye was the spotlight effect on the moored boat caused by the last trace of sunlight shining through a small break in the thickening clouds. I also noticed that the owner of the boat is into recycling as he has an empty plastic milk bottle tied onto the anchor rope as a float. Fuji S9600: Manual settings of f/11 @ 1/200sec handled the dynamic range and my pop-up flash at full power threw some light onto the umbrellas. / Lightroom & Photoshop CS3 rendered the fine moody result. • A collection of photographs of the wonderful seascapes in Port Macquarie and Diamond Head, New South Wales, Australia.

  • THE SUBJECT: / The rider is off, the bull looks for a likely target to vent its anger upon, the clowns rush in to distract the bull and protect the rider and suddenly the colourful clown has to become a matador, prepared to fend off the charging bull. Olé! THE LOCATION: / This adrenalin pumping action was photographed at the 2007 Kundabung Rodeo . This annual international event is held at the usually sleepy little township of Kundabung , about a forty five minute drive north of Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Colourful Matador’: / This one proves just how good the angle of shot is from the top row of the small grandstand on which my friends and I were perched. This scene shot from ground level would not have the same impact and would be ruined by too much distracting background. And to think I was going to stay on the fence!!!!! / It was a very pleasant warm to hot spring day and I was perched on the top row of the small but very steep grandstand beside my two best Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mates. It was a great day with plenty of bullriding action, music, rodeo clowns, good food and great Aussie country hospitality. / Unfortunately because of an Equine ‘Flu epidemic there were no horses at this year’s rodeo but the action with the bulls was enough to keep the adrenalin racing for us spectators as well as the riders. / Fuji S9600: RAW, 1/1000sec @ f/4, ISO80, Continuous focus, Hand held. / Lightroom & Photoshop CS3. • This trio of Phalacrocorax sulcirostris (Little Black Cormorants) , were drying out and preening in the afternoon sun on the bowsprit of the Alma Doepel, an historic sailing ship, moored at Lady Nelson Wharf in Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia on a late spring day. As I was shooting against the light I made sure I obtained a higher than usual contrast for B&W conversion. At first I was going to make this a very stark B&W silhouette but when I saw those touches of highlights on the birds I decided on an 85% silhouette. Visit the Aussie Birds collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more fine feathered Aussies. Fuji S9600: 1/500sec @ f/7.1, Auto Focus, Hand held with a pylon for support. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3 for minimal editing and a good B&W conversion. Enjoy! • THE SUBJECT: / This stark dead tree stood out so well from the distant background that it really “popped” when I first looked at it so I ground to a halt and began nutting out just how to photograph this rural scene. The main problem was just how to shoot it at the “wrong” time on a blazing hot summer day. THE LOCATION: / West of Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia, through Wauchope, (pronounced “War-Hope”), through Beechwood and into a dairy area called Pappinbarra . THE MAKING of ‘Bare Bones’: / Fuji S9600 on a tripod at full stretch to clear a barbed wire fence – ND4 & Circular Polarizing Filters stacked – Manual settings of f/3.6 @ 1/60sec – Manual focus – ISO80 – Timer. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / A beautiful pair of Ardea alba (Great Egrets) stalking the shallows in the light of a mid afternoon winter day. THE LOCATION: / On the southern shore of Lake Cathie , NSW, Australia, near the bridge. THE MAKING OF ‘Egret Twins’: / As the birds talked the shallows I stalked them. To do so I had the camera up to my eye, slowly but surely getting closer and closer. That was when I heard a sloshing sound and realised I had just walked into the water up to my ankles! / Fuji S9600: f/8 @ 1/200sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / Another purely candid shot that became much more interesting as I processed it and noticed what was written on the piece of paper the girl is reading – “Role Models”. THE LOCATION: / From my seat outside the new Créma Espresso Bar in the CDB of Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia, on a bright summer day. THE MAKING of ‘Role Models’: / I was just taking a sip from my [_]>a skinny flat white when I spotted this feminine trio crossing the road. Down went the MUG and up came the preset camera and when I saw the girl reading the piece of paper I locked on and hoped like mad that I made a good shot. / Fuji S5500: RAW, f/3.1 @ 1/680sec, ISO64, Hand held with elbows on the table. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshp CS3. • The Subject: / Just part of an extremely well restored and maintained 1927 Studebaker Big Six Roadster displaying its original Shell Oil can and some bright, shiny chrome work. The Location: / The vintage and veteran automobile display at the 61st Annual Camden Haven Show, Kendall on the last day of summer. The Making of ‘Shell Oil’: / This was the first scene that caught my eye as soon as I walked up to the automobile display. I was really taken by the great orange/yellow/green colour contrast, the bright shiny bits and all the different lines. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/8 @ 1/320sec, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / An elevated zoomed view of Tacking Point Lighthouse and a passing yacht photographed in the brilliant light of a clear autumn afternoon. / To give you a sense of scale I draw your attention to the miniscule figure on the rock ledge below the lighthouse. THE LOCATION: / The shot was made from a track at the south end of Sea Acres Nature Reserve, Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Autumn Sail Past Tacking Point Light’: / I had not planned to walk the track that day so to make such a shot using the great light was another case of Photographer’s Luck. / I have been reading up on landscape/seascape photography and decided to try using the camera’s “sweet spot” aperture for a change. This meant using a fast shutter speed that created a slightly under exposed image. I really like the result. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/5 @ 1/2500sec, Manual focus, ISO80, Hand held but supported. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / The shaggy top of a Boletellus emodensis (Hairy-cap Mushroom) in the glorious natural light of an autumn afternoon. THE LOCATION: / Beside a track in the Kattang Nature Reserve at Dunbogan, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Shaggy Top (Boletellus emodensis – Hairy-cap Mushroom) #3’: / I was on a fungi safari with a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mate and we had only begun our hunt when I spotted the shaggy top of this fungus displaying itself so well against the rotting stump and caught in lovely side lighting. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/11 @ 1/5sec, Manual focus, ISO80, Tripod, Timer. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.
