When the conditions are right where I live we experience the wonderful phenomena of sea fog. The first one I experienced was when I was “in between” cameras. I was devastated! I have been hoping ever since that we would get another one… I peered out the window today while I was on the phone and saw that today was the day! I had to make my apologies to my friend on the phone – a girl has to get her priorities right – and happily spent the next two hours snapping, with my young boys as my photography assistants. The title of this piece is inspired by one of my favourite scenes in Lord of the Rings. Gandalf the mighty wizard gives his life to ensure the freedom of his friends… and so my friend today gave to me the same gift of freedom as I hastily hung up the phone to explore my sea fog.

For more information or to purchase prints please visit: / www.RainbowPathArtStudio.com “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one” – Albert Einstein It is so amazing how some paintings come into being and the effect they have on the unsuspecting viewer. In 1997 I was painting with a group of like-minded artists for an upcoming exhibition. One of the artists was a beautiful soul by the name of Greg Grace. Greg was a good friend of mine whose work I greatly admired. One day Greg was showing me some of his latest drawings and when I saw a sketch of the Gateway, I was blown away. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen, affecting me very deeply. I wanted to take it home to look at, every day. So I came up with a great solution, I would paint it! I approached Greg with the idea and much to my surprise he agreed. Greg liked the way I painted and felt that my style of painting would very much suit and enhance the powerful energy emanating from the mandala. He gave me the original drawing from which I worked. I absolutely loved painting the mandala. Painting the mandala in the dot style is the most effective and energetically powerful way of transmitting the essence of Gateway. The energy was so powerful at times that I could not work on the painting for more that a couple of hours a day. The original drawing was only of the mandala; I added the cosmic background because that’s where the gateway existed. When I look at the mandala in a meditative way I go through it to other dimensions. Intuitively, I sense that the Gateway exists within the middle star of the belt of Orion, and is the primary star-gate to multi- dimensional levels and universes. Every one of my friends who came to look at Gateway had a unique experience.

The Gateway Arch, St. Louis, Missouri / / It was raining and extremely foggy, so this is the clearest shot I could get, but it just shows how high up it is to be enveloped by clouds. / / / / The Arch is the tallest national monument in the United States at 630 feet; it is the city’s best known landmark and a popular tourist attraction. / / Construction began February 12, 1963 and the last section of the Arch was put into place on October 28, 1965. / / The Arch is a structure known as a catenary curve, the shape a free-hanging chain takes when held at both ends, and considered the most structurally-sound arch shape. The span of the Arch legs at ground level is 630 feet, the same as its height. / / Each year, approximately a million visitors ride the trams to the top of the Arch. The trams have been in operation for over 30 years, traveling a total of 250,000 miles and carrying over 25 million passengers. / / The Arch weighs 17,246 tons. Nine hundred tons of stainless steel was used to build the Arch, more than any other project in history. / / The Arch was built at a cost of $13 million. The transportation system was built at a cost of $3,500,000. / / In order to ensure that the constructed legs would meet, the margin of error for failure was 1/64th of an inch. All survey work was done at night to eliminate distortion caused by the sun’s rays. Since the Arch was constructed before the advent of computer technology, relatively crude instruments were used for these measurements. / / The Arch sways a maximum of 18” (9” each way) in a 150 mph wind. The usual sway is 1/2”.

This is the picture that is being used as the cover of this year’s Mid-Wales Tourism Brochure. On the back page it says: ‘Cover picture David Meacham’ – how posh is that? I’m proud to say that out of 90 pictures used in the brochure 51 are mine – weeeeeeehagh. Do I sound excited – you bet I am – I’ve been sitting on this for a fortnight waiting for the brochure to hit the Tourism Centres before I was allowed to upload it The doorway pictured is at Tretower Court, Near Crickhowell, Powys.
