A cute little Goldfinch high in the trees… The delicate Goldfinch has beauty and charm in abundance. This small finch is strikingly colourful with its mixture of red, white and black on the head, golden brown body and bright yellow wing bars. Looking more closely, the lores and crown are black, the chin and forehead are red and the cheeks are white. The body is predominantly golden or tawny brown, but the belly and rump are white. The wings are mostly black with a large striking yellow band. The bill varies from pinkish to pale grey, and the legs are flash coloured.
A small brown and grey bird. Quiet and inobtrusive, it is often seen on its own, creeping along the edge of a flower bed or near to a bush, moving with a rather nervous, shuffling gait, often flicking its wings as it goes. When two rival males come together they become animated with lots of wing-flicking and loud calling.
The Starling People just don’t realise how good looking this little bird is up close’ a lot of people think they are just black as you can see not true’ I love this little bird and would like to promote and give It the true justice that they deserve. Smaller than blackbirds, with a short tail, pointed head, triangular wings, starlings look black at a distance but when seen closer they are very glossy with a sheen of purples and greens. Their flight is fast and direct and they walk and run confidently on the ground. Noisy and gregarious, starlings spend a lot of the year in flocks. Still one of the commonest of garden birds, its decline elsewhere makes it a Red List species. They eat Insects and fruit. LOCATION TAKEN NR HUNTINGDON / CAMBRIDGESHIRE / UNITED KINGDOM

Okay, so, I am feeling the Spring in the air … it has descended upon me. . and like every other spring time, especially one where rain is hoped for, since first I saw that movie, I have a little rendition of the song from Bambi playing in my head. It’s not the best rendition, mind, as I don’t remember all the words, but … it is a lovely and expressive ditty! There are, I believe, four variations of this particular piece. I’ve been trying to cut down on variations, but, on these, I really couldn’t make the choice of which to abandon.

I am not sure what this would have been some sort of turning device maybe for shoes or wool….but it is in the garden of the Gite, so thought I would take advantage of the fact! Anyone who knows please tell me then I can add that information :))
some more of the relics we found in the garden at the Gite….
I spent the last day of 2008 taking photos and I intend to start the new year the same way- yahoy. Have a great new year. / A pataka is a pre- european maori food store. They were raised to keep the food safe from vermin and to keep it dry. This image was taken at the new maori garden at the Hamilton Gardens in Hamilton New Zealand. / It is made up of three images with varying F stops and different opacities. Canon 400D F:4 EF 70-200L. Focal Length 70 ISO 100 F stops 7.1, 9 & 11 Shutter 1/50. I put a tiny amount of posturisation on the image to bring out the intricate carving detail. The foreground displays kumara plants which were a staple diet. Still are in some places here. The background plants are all New Zealand native plants. Best Viewed Large / /

Karen and I went out to Bressingham and found all sort of interesting photo opportunities – well it does take us hours to go round somewhere. / Nikon D200 iso 400 f8, 1/320, aperture priority.
Wood-lice are every where. They are more closely related to lobsters and crayfish than to insects. Most are greyish and small. / Their body is coveredwith a series of hard plates joined by flexible membranes. When disturbed , some are able to roll into a ball, like tiny armadillos. /
Featured in Cottage Style – August 19, 2009 I had this second image of the little cottage in the English Gardens in Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was going to make a challenge cover photo with it. I decided it’s too nice to waste on just a cover, so I am uploading the fractalius version on this image. /
