by Rebecca CruzThe Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island, Canada, is one of the world’s premier floral show gardens. Jennie Butchart began to shape this magnificent landscape in 1904. She established, in the style of the grand estates of the period, several distinct gardens to evoke a range of aesthetic experiences. Near Puget Sound, Washington state I think we all have a special place / that beckons to us. / When we see it, we ask ourselves, / “What is beyond that door?” / This intriguing garden gate / is that place for me. / It is not too far from where I live, / down this private lane, / on the waterfront. / I have gone there / all seasons of the year …. / it always calls to me. / Perhaps one day, / I will go and knock on their door / and meet the people who live there / just to see if the garden is / as wonderful as the promise. / That would satisfy my curiosity! / Or then again, / ...maybe not! / Maybe I will just let it / remain a mystery / and keep it / perfect in my mind / and simply, / ” my secret garden…..” I have photographed this scene at most seasons of the year, but I think that Springtime is certainly the very best when the Rhododendrons bloom. In Washington State, the Coastal Rhododendron is our state flower.
