  • I was resting in the Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne when I noticed this scene. Just above was a group of Rainbow Lorikeets yelling at me (also photographed!) but this simple composition stood out to me. There was something old world about the texture and shape of this old tree and I wanted to reveal the detail of it without being so close that it lost its identity and form. Lucky for me the light was perfect for the capturing of such detail… CLICK TO VIEW MY LANDSCAPE SERIES Click to see more of my photographic artwork / Click to visit me! /

  • First snow of the coming winter on Pikes Peak. /

  • My first attempt at a soft waterfall, albeit handheld and within muttering distance of someone who sounded like he knew what he was doing!!! / So with a few attempts that ended up on the virtual ‘cutting room floor’ I think I’ve managed one that is passable. / Taken at Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney … on a photography outing with Warren Williams who was visiting from Sth Africa. NOW FOR A CROPPED VERSION as per Boz’z suggestion / Landscapes Trees Cards EOD Rusty Flowers Architecture Macro CatchAll DM

  • SEcond version – following Boz’s suggestion, cropped to allow the waterfall to fill the frame (and also remove a lighter distracting rock!) / / exp: 0.250s / ap: f16 / ISO: 160 / WB: Auto / No polarizer (perhaps a mistake as is was sunny) / Hand held / / It was a tad overexposed but RAW processing worked a treat. • Firstly like to thank everyone for looking and commenting, just don’t seem to be getting the time to say thanks , anyway on to the shot now. Shot at Sizergh castle near kendal in Cumbria in the English lake district.. / HDR d A little history on the place now: The core of Sizergh Castle is a 14th century pele tower. The castle was built within the wide band of land which, before the Union of 1603, frequently changed hands between England and Scotland. The tower has walls 9-foot-thick which still reach to 60 feet at the battlements. During Tudor times the castle was extended to the north and west. These wings have fine panelling and decoration. The Great Hall, built in 1450, was altered and decorated between 1558 and 1575. Some further changes were made during the late 18th century and the castle reflects the period of prosperty during Tudor times. The panelling of the Inlaid Chamber was sold to the Victoria and Albert museum in 1891. However, the museum has loaned back two panels together with the inlaid bed which was made to match the room. The castle contains English and French furniture, silver and china and family portraits. There is also a collection of Stuart portraits and Stuart and Jacobite relics. In 1239 the castle passed by marriage into the hands of the Strickland family. Unfortunately no photography was allowed inside, I could have had a beano in there with my camera…

  • I’ve been looking for some Amanita muscaria without success but I thought I might just put up a few other “guys” I found while looking. These tiny guys were growing out of a recently fallen old stag (dead tree). • Worth clicking Large to see all the stars. 30 second exposure of a moving cloudbank backlit by the moon between two pinnacles in the Gardens of Stone National Park (isn’t that the coolest name for a NP?). Taken around midnight. First new landscape pic for a while. A friend invited me to another friend’s birthday in this amazing location. I’ve never been to this area on the other side of the Blue Mountains and was just gobsmacked as we drove down this valley with these majestic mountains rising on either side. I spotted this vantage point on the way in and as the party wore on snuck away to get some shots and was presented with this vista as I rolled up in the car. Managed to get about 15 mins in before it started to sleet. Man it was freezing with the wind coming off the late snow. The party was in an old art deco hotel being lovingly restored by this young couple and their six(!) children (oldest 11!!) Can’t believe the energy some people have or their vision. This hotel is located in a near-deserted old shale mining town at the end of a valley you can only access by dirt road about 4 hours from Sydney. It was all quite surreal – particularly when some of the girls at the party heard I was a photographer and decided they wanted to do a Norman Lindsay style “bacchanalia” photoshoot at the end of the night – just hilarious but OMG working with drunk models is hard work – “sit still”, “stop giggling” – never again! Still I managed to do both my favourite styles of photography in one night so it’s churlish to complain. Canon 1Ds Mk III / Tv: 30 secs / Av: f/3.2 / ISO: 1600

  • Well as you can see from the images below, The Empty Studio has been all about inks…my inks had been put away for so long some of them had dried out, and had to be discarded, but I still have an assortment of acrylic inks, and have been using mostly sepia and black for this collection… Today I added a bit of colour to this latest painting of Hollyhocks…they seemed to need it…I’ve had the sketch forever in my files, and I don’t know where it originated, but at one time I did grow these regal flowers in my garden and maybe the idea came from that time of my life Acrylic Inks on Cotton Paper… Silently a flower blooms, / In silence it falls away; / Yet here now, at this moment, at this place, / The world of the flower, the whole of / the world is blooming. / This is the talk of the flower, the truth / of the blossom: / The glory of eternal life is fully shining here. / - Zenkei Shibayama..
