Created for the Dimensions Group ‘Through My Window’ Challenge Needless to say this is not my window…but one is allowed to dream…sigh!
We added this conservatory to our home four years ago and what a gift it has been! Rain or shine, we can so fully appreciate the beauty God has given us in the surrounding cathedral of towering fir trees, and, in the warmer months, the radiant colors of the garden flowers. The view from Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, Scotland, looking up to the Old Town. In the centre of the shot is the Bank of Scotland Building at the Mound. The former Bank of Scotland headquarters, now headquarters of the merged HBOS, has dominated the northern flank of Edinburgh’s Old Town for 300 years. The shot is from Cockburn Street. The Bank of Scotland Headquarters stands on Edinburgh’s Mound looking down over East Princes Street Gardens. The HQ Building was initiated while Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville (1742 – 1811), was Governor of the Bank. The Bank Headquarters was built by architects Robert Reid (1774 – 1856) and Richard Crichton. David Bryce (1803 – 76) refurbished the Interior in 1862 and added new domed wings with a grand replacement central dome. The Bank of Scotland Headquarters were remodelled again in 1929 and 1981. Established by an Act of the Scottish Parliament in 1695, the Bank of Scotland is the oldest surviving UK clearing bank. The Bank started in Edinburgh’s Old Town, at Old Bank Close in the Lawnmarket, before relocating to the Mound. The Bank of Scotland merged with the Halifax Building Society in 2001, becoming HBoS Plc, but the Bank’s headquarters remain in Edinburgh. On the left, you can see the crown of St Giles Cathedral which is on the High Street (the Royal Mile) and on the right at the top of the High Street, you can see the gothic spire of the Hub – the highest point in central Edinburgh. Every time I visit my mother, I come home with lots of beautiful flower photos, too many to choose just one, so I decided to put several together in this collage I’ve named, “Garden of Eden,” because that is exactly what Mama’s yard feels like! It’s a sight for the eyes and a soothing balm for the soul. The image of the cardinal sitting on the statue of Jesus is from my yard; there is a very old cardinal who loves to rest there. I think he’s got just the right idea. No better place to find peace!
A panoramic view from West Princes Street Gardens taking in the enormity of Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle is unequalled in the whole of the British Isles. Over one thousand years of history sit on top of the famous Edinburgh rock. Edinburgh Castle is a collection of buildings many of which are Historic Scotland Category A or B Listed Buildings. As an example, Edinburgh Castle Great Hall is Category A listed (HB Number 48220). Sutton Bank is a high vantage point at the very edge of the Hambleton Hills and the North York Moors with extensive views over the Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray. Because of its location and high elevation, Sutton Bank is popular with gliding and flying enthusiasts. Predominant landmarks include Whitestone Cliff and Roulston Scar, the former overlooking the mysterious (and reputedly bottomless !) Lake Gormire. Close nearby are the villages of Sutton-under-Whitestonecliff, and Kilburn (famous for the White Horse of Kilburn, and Robert Thompson – the “Mouseman” of Kilburn). / Sutton Bank is one of the most spectacular inland cliffs anywhere in Britain, and carries one of the most hair-raising main roads in the country. The near vertical drop from top to bottom is around 140 metres, and crosses at least two major geological boundaries. / The Sutton Bank National Park Centre is on the western edge of the fabulous North York Moors National Park – home to the largest expanse of heather moorland in England. It provides the perfect introduction to the National Park, its people, history and wildlife. Nikon D60 / HDR in Photomatix & pp in PS CS3 / Lens: Nikkor 18-200mm / 1/160 f/9.0 ISO200
