Never blogged or journaled online before so here goes… / In this little corner of the world on the eastern coast…of the South Island of New Zealand spring has finally sprung after a long and cold winter. The little cottage garden outside is waking up after its long hibernation and exploding with blossom and colour. The old plum tree looks like a canopy of white confetti and loud pink blousy blooms of camellias are now smoothering themselves over the 12 foot high bushes/trees. / On Monday the first ducklings of the season appeared in the garden…mother duck proudly showing me she had 11 fluffy followers. These numbers have already started to drop sadly, as neighbourhood cats, mine included are very attracted to them. I did successfully retrieve one from the jaws of my tabby Sam…and even managed after some searching to reunite it with a distraught mum. / Tulips, bluebells and daffodils pop up here and there and the sun has been shining this week a little more than normal. / I’ve been raising seeds assorted herbs and tomatoes on the indoor window sills..it is still too risky to put anything outside, as the fear of frosts is not over. / I completed two small paintings this week. It was an experiment in using a limited palette. Both paintings were of feet…ballet dancers feet. The colours I used were Titanium white and Raw Umber…quite surprising how just two colours can create so many tones. / I sold 6 paintings over the last 6 weeks…at two large annual exhibitions, one in Auckland and the other in Wellington. I sometimes wonder where mypaintings end up..the kind of homes they go to. Imagine if you could tag them to find out! / I have really enjoyed my first week on RedBubble, found lots of supportive, creative people out there and look forward to seeing and sharing my work with you all. / There is a cloud of waxeyes outside my window as I type this, greenfinches/goldfinches busily eating seed from the feeders in the garden…and this morning I was woken up my the a very impressive song from a grey warbler…so happy spring is here. Enjoy your week.

For everyone in the Portland/Vancouver area, you might be interested in a local group that hosts photoshoots. Meetup.com has an upcoming photoshoot at the Japanese Gardens on March 22. Check it out. This is quite the active group. / Also Pro Photo has a number of workshops/photoshoots for our area. Coming up is the Canon Macro Photography class at the Tulip Festival (April 11th and 12th). I am signed up for the 12th. This is a free class and it fills up really quickly. / Also, check out the Zoo photography classes. I have taken some of these and they are quite well done. / If anyone is attending any of these workshops, please post a note under this journal and we will try to meet up. Four of us went to the Japanese Garden last weekend for a Workshop. The trees are just starting to bloom.

When I wrote about the Pink Petunias, it was in a lighthearted manner. But deeper down, I will confess to my bias against- STANDARD WHITE ICEBERG ROSES / BOX HEDGES / PETUNIAS The reason is quite simply this: they are environmentally unsound. When I lived closer to the city, and on the country outskirts, I watched as acre after acre of formerly prime market garden land was turned into suburbs of deserts. Too many people followed the latest trend in gardening and planted those noted above. Row after row after row of houses had these. What diversity of life can these plants offer? Very very little. And without the diversity of life, we are lost. / The so-called gardens in these suburbs have very little in common with the suburbs of the 1950’s, which supplied families with an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables and flowers. And I might add, these homes (not houses) also had a rainwater tank, often raised up on a concrete form which provided a cool retreat in the summer. Who needed air-conditioning then? Now before you respond and tell me all about the wonders of the plants I have denigrated, just consider them as examples of the paucity of diversity when combined in the manner I have described. So really, it is not plants at fault at all, is it? Next time you decide to put in a plant, please consider what it offers to all who share this planet, and see what a difference a little thought can make.

I just wanted to say big THANK YOU to Maddy ( Madeline M. Allen), a dear friend of mine who lives here in Winnipeg and who invited me to join her in an art show in her beautiful garden. / It was a great show and a great success for both of us, we sold many pieces and took some orders for our work and books. / Maddy is an excellent hostess and her husband Barry was a great company to my hubby Voyteck while we were busy with our clients. / So once again THANK YOU for a wonderful weekend and an experience I will never forget. / HUGS, Teresa

Thank you to the anonymous buyer who a few moments ago purchased my Lovely Lemur tee in the army brown color. I was coincidentally logged onto RB when the sale came through and gave me a pleasant surprise. I hope you enjoy your Tee! Sadly, the artwork that the lemur tee design came from is presently missing (might have gotten thrown away during a house cleanse! Hopefully not, but it’s been missing several months now and there are only so many places it could be in a four room apartment!). But I am glad that the artwork lives on in this tee design :) As this is the first lemur tee sale I’ve had, the buyer can be proud to know that as of this moment, they are the ONLY person that will be walking around with this design. So it’s a truly unique tee!

A year and a week ago, my friend Julia died from a prolonged battle with advanced ovarian cancer. She died as she had lived – with a gracefulness and gentleness, connectedness and a consciousness that I can only hope to have when my time comes. Julia was one of my garden friends, and those that garden will know that connection that happens between gardeners. That connectedness gives me the gift of having such wonderful people right here with me in my garden all the time. There’s a wise, funny and gentle dialogue there for me whenever I want to tap into it and listen. My Grandmother is here, with her strong, short nailed, wrinkled hands, and her love of kohlrabi, picking her oranges, choosing yet another Camellia, my Mum is there with yet another really funky cool succulent for us all to share cuttings from, and her beautiful intuitive way of putting things together, my brother’s partner Nonie is there with her parsley, with her incredible passion for trees, Jill, for whom I used to garden, and who passed away from liver cancer, is there with her amazing sense of colour, and her love and incredible knowledge of heritage roses, my friend (and another lovely lady for whom I gardened) Noreen is here, with all the times we spent together planning and planting, My very very dear friend Sue is here every single time I pot up cuttings in my shadehouse. It feels like so many amazing friends are part of my garden, which is my life. And Julia is here. The wise and funny, down to earth. Julia who sadly said ‘Oh Lou…’ when I told her I had managed to kill my persimmon tree by planting it, ( and I did know better too) in the middle of a bare paddock with wind from all directions….Julia who said quite matter of factly when I was recovering from my own cancer treatment, that what I needed was to start growing my own vegetables again – and she was right. Julia, who gave my husband and I a stunning bottle of cherry wine, made from her own cherries, for a wedding gift (and I have to say her hawthorn wine and quince wine were to exquisite). Julia is here as I plant lettuce, plan my berry patch, net my orchard. She’s here in the tagasaste trees. I think of her parking her wheelbarrow in the entrance to her vegetable garden to stop the roos getting in, and all the crazy gates with baling twine and funny twicky bits of wire instead of latches and hinges. (Yep, I have those too…..blasted things) I can see her hands and hear her laugh, see the pink roses of shyness in her cheeks when she was speaking to a group – for she did teach permaculture and sustainable gardening, and she was nervous when she had to present. One week before she died, I spoke with her and we pretty much said goodbye. I told her that she would always be here in my garden, and she replied that a few people had said that to her, and that it was such a lovely thought, to know that she would be in these beautiful gardens all over the state, and indeed spread around the globe. Keep well in all the gardens Julia – they are lovelier places for having you as a part of them. My vegetable pictures always bring Julia to my mind, for during our last conversation, she teased me about my love of photographing my vegetables – as bragging! And yep, of course there is a little bragging, we are all proud when we grow something beautiful and yummy too – but there is more than that, I revel in the colours and shapes and flavours and textures of food that I grow. So my vegie pics are always with you in mind Julia, and I wish that you were around so I could give you a big luscious print of an artichoke…..... (Kind of explains the art school drop out became gardener….)
