View THE FALLING GARDEN / By Gerda Steiner & Jorg Lenzlinger Falling Garden / San Staë church on the Canale Grande / 50th Biennial of Venice, 2003 The Doge (Mocenigo) needed a church so as to be able to have a monumental tomb built for himself, the church (San Staë) needed a saint so as to be able to be built, the saint (San Eustachio) needed a miracle so as to be pronounced a saint, the miracle needed a stag in order to be seen, and we built the garden for the reindeer. / The visitors lie on the bed above the doge’s gravestone, and the garden thinks for them. Components: Plastic berries (India), cow pads (Jura), waste paper (Venice), baobab seeds (Australia), beech, elder and magnolia branches (Uster), thorns (Almeria), nylon blossoms (one-dollar-shop), pigs’ teeth (Indonesia), seaweed (Seoul), orange peel (Migros shop), fertilizer crystals (home grown), pigeons’ bones (San Staë), silk buds (Stockholm), cattail (Ettiswil), cats’ tails (China), celery roots (Montreal), virility rind (Caribbean), wild bore quills (zoo), banana leaves (Murten), rubber snakes (Cincinnati).

It’s been too long / Don’t think I’ve seen you smile at me for quite a while / And we’re too busy doing things / We haven’t noticed what’s missing / Where’s the fun we used to have? / My childish ways and your sarcasm / Silly jokes and fairy tales / Where did we leave them? / Lost in the backyard / Your lasso my tiara / My wand, your plastic bazooka / Why can’t we be how we were / In the backyard Your cowboy hat, my tutu / You hide and seek, I catch you / Why can’t we be how we were in the backyard / Simple days of hand in hand / And drawing our names in the sand / Somehow life just complicates / Our buried treasure it just waits / Lost in the backyard / You can still meet me in the garden / You and I and hide behind the rosebed / You and I / You and I / Lost in the backyard again NATASHA BEDINGFIELD

Hi all. Is it me, or this year, there is a lack of Starlings and Sparrows ?? In the Terrace where I live, (9 Cottages) not one of us has had any Sparrows nesting this year, and walking through the parks, Sparrows and Starlings are conspicuous by their absence. Have any more of you noticed this decline ?? Thanks. Richard.

MY FAVOURITES - "Japanese Windflowers" by Tiffany Dryburgh
by Adriana GlackinNot all images in “My Favourites” necess…
Not all images in “My Favourites” necessarily illicit images or memories from childhood. “Japanese Windflowers” by Tiffany Dryburgh caught my imagination and everytime I look at this image, the same story unfolds… Helena is 83 and has lived in her inner city cottage all her life. The cottage, originally a worker’s cottage had been in her family since 1910. She was born in that simple home, as had all her children. Always a happy home, Helena simply delighted in tending the small garden. How times had changed, the neighbours had come and gone, apartment blocks now stood where a lot of the workers’ cottages once stood. But still, Helena maintained her sanctuary. The japanese windflowers were her pride and joy, temperamental things they can be, but this year’s blooms were the finest yet. Helena was looking forward to saturday, that was the day her children would be visiting and wouldn’t they be surprised at the many blooms filling Helena’s garden! ps. apologies to those who are perhaps expecting great pieces of writing – sorry – I’m definitely not a writer in any way, shape or form, I’m simply unleashing the images I see in my head when I view the favourites I have chosen. I feel very brave in doing this because I don’t know any of you, nor you know me – so it’s safe (except I have a friend or two on here but they probably will see this as my latest fad ; > ).

SaharaBelle is a new member to RB, but not much of a writer. Because I like her work (both in the kitchen :D and with a camera), I’m showing you some her amazing photography. Thankfully SaharaBelle made a few comments during the upload process – so I’ll divulge these with you. Basically, this post serves as an easy way for our family and friends to quickly see all the cards of her amazing photography. There will be more soon. In fact, some of my collection will moving across. Yes, I took credit for her work … with her permission! But now she is a member, she wants them back. Anyway, here are all the cards of our recent visit to the Wittunga National Park. I encourage people to leave nice comments on her work. Or critique’s. We’re always looking for extra help on how to take a better photograph! You might recognise this photograph! I cropped this one to a square image to make her avatar. I love this photograph … it’s so vibrant and almost blinding! What do you think?! / “This one will make a great Christmas card!”. Her words after this uploaded. / I suggested this shot – because she had the Macro-lens. It turned out a lot better than I ever expected. It helps that SaharaBelle made sure the blue sky was in the background of these shots, thereby allowing a lot more light to come through the ‘field of focus’. / Nice shadows in this one. The yellow stamen look like antenna … don’t they? / Hehe, nature’s feather duster! I suspect it would leave more pollen than it would remove! / I just love how this is the colours of the Australian flag! / This little bee is getting his money’s worth of nectar… / It took a while to think of a suitable title. But this choice works well. / Sometimes the title’s are just so apt. Yet come out of nowhere. / I originally suggested “Toilet Brush”, but apparently my humor was NOT appropriate. / I’m sure you can see why this title was chosen. This little bee probably wasn’t imprisoned at all, but they do look like bars around his face! / This is a flower in the process of blooming. When we return next weekend, I hope to capture these in full bloom! / Hehe, this little guy was filling up like a car at the petrol-pump! I’m sure he saw the camera coming toward him, but just had to get that nectar! / This amazing shot was incredibly lucky. With a dedicated macro lens, she was going to shoot just the flower … but found the little black bug inside. / This amazing little bee was sticking his face straight into the flower, digging all the nectar out. / We think this was an ant, but not real sure! He was swimming around the nectar, presumably doing the anty-paddle (doggy paddle, get it?!). / Here is that bee again. This was the last time we saw this guy before he flew back to the hive… / SaharaBelle tells me this is her favourite shot, and I agree. The detail in those wings is outstanding! / But this is not the end! SaharaBelle and I have plans for more day-trips, even with the SA Central group later this year! SaharaBelle and I hope you all (wink wink at friends and family!) like these cards enough to purchase a few.

hey red bubblers. I was thinking it’d be fun to have a sydney catch up. Take photos, do our own creative venture. meet say, at the botanic gardens-it’s a bit safe, but there’s plenty of nature and monuments and it could always change, or be somewhere else next time. the big question: weekday or weekend? I venture wednesday week, 10am because I have to earn a living later in the day. What say you?

This morning I awoke at about 5-50am. Got up went to the bathroom and then sat at my computer to sort a couple of photos before the mad rush of the day began. Anyway while sitting there I also had my tv on as a lot of the schools were closed today because of the teachers strike and I wanted to listen out for any last minute closures as some children like Katie still had school as they are sitting their SATs soon. The weather forecast came on, band of rain coming, wet and windy day, lots of showers clearing in the afternoon…..... sighhhhhhh, so I decided to look out my bedroom window and see if it was raining but to my surprise no rain but a beautiful big rainbow so I grabbed my camera and managed a couple of shots before it faded …...........now I know why I take my camera to bed with me LOL. After dropping Katie off at Breakfast Club at school, by which time it was raining cats and dogs I went to Mum’s to check on her and have coffee and toast, I had Grahame with me this morning as he had day release college through his job but I had to take Katie’s cat to the vets as she had an eye infection gone very bad and I needed his help. We managed to get her from her hiding place eventually and got her in a portabox. It was bad news at the vets her eye is so bad that tomorrow they are going to put her out and remove the eye, I should explain here that Louisa the cat, had gone walkabout and we thought run over but she turned up out of the blue a couple of days ago looking a bit worse for wear. To cut a long story short, they gave us a quote for her eye surgery and aftercare £350-00 approx plus the cost of any medication or further treatment that she might need. We don’t have pet insurance but they have kindly said once everything is done they will work out a payment plan with us and to possibly expect the total bill to be around £450-00. Feeling rotten and worrying about Louisa we decided to have a drive around with our cameras and see if anything was happening at any of our haunts. By about 11-30am the showers had eased up although it was quite windy and overcast. I suggested going to Stansted House Gardens as it was free, not far from home and after uploading some summer shots over the last few days I was eager to see how it looked at springtime. The heavens smiled on us and the sun came out and went in and came out LOL….. it didn’t rain, was still a bit windy but we had sun on and off and blue sky. We wandered around for a few hours taking pics of flowers and trees and I was excited to see all the plants in bud ready to spill their beautiful flowers soon, I can’t wait to go back in a few weeks and see. At about 2-30pm we got back to the car after getting some great shots. Just as we got in the car the sky darkened and it hammered down with rain again. So now I am just about to sort through the pictures taken today and hopefully have some beautiful flowers and foliage images to upload soon…....... sooooooooooo how was YOUR day today…...........??

When it’s too cute to be classed a garden snail. I’ve just uploaded a couple of photos I took last year, just after I got my groovy camera, before I worked out how it really worked!! / These tiny snails are only 4-5mm long and have wonderful spiral shells with the most beautiful markings. I haven’t seen them since as I moved house so am glad that I took these pics. The ants, millipedes and snails were all working together, crawling all over the birdbath bowl that was sitting on the ground. They snails’ shells actually wobble from side to side as they are crawling! I was so amazed by these tiny creatures. / It would be great to find out where else these snail are. Has anyone seen them?

The fog slowly saturates the battlefield… an eerie silence envelopes the garden. Then suddenly a blood curdling cry is heard from the direction of the bird bath!!! Then a twig snaps from behind the garden hose… did something just move beyond the shed? The troops are tense, there nerves; once iron strong are now failing them, they now tremble with fear as their imaginations run wild with the rumors from around the neighbourhood… could it be true? Are the wild tales of ancient and bloodthirsty garden gnomes really true? Do these mythical creatures really exist? Then as if summoned from the dead the gnomes arise and strike without fear or mercy. All that stands in their way of total garden domination are these last three brave and foolish souls. / /

Some kind people have asked about my garden. It is not very big but has been designed to look very large. The entirety of the garden is impossible to see in any one location. In person it is intimate and everything is close by and touchable. There is no one time of year when the garden is at it’s best but my wife and I do enjoy it when the wild California poppies bloom. The rocks have been collected over a period of twenty years and most of them carried in the back of my hatchbacks, a Tercel, Civic, and Mazda 3. I have never owned a pickup truck. Most of the rocks have been found near roads in the mountains or just empty fields. Finding beautiful rocks is getting harder as I’m not the only one looking for them. The look of this garden can only be arrived at with the passage of time. / Wabi sabi and whimsy have guided efforts in it’s conception. The cats love the garden as do birds of all kinds, plus snakes and lizards. I hope to retain possession of it until I die and most of my retirement will involve recording it in creative ways. I’d like to capture in paint someday as well.

For everyone in the Portland/Vancouver area, you might be interested in a local group that hosts photoshoots. Meetup.com has an upcoming photoshoot at the Japanese Gardens on March 22. Check it out. This is quite the active group. / Also Pro Photo has a number of workshops/photoshoots for our area. Coming up is the Canon Macro Photography class at the Tulip Festival (April 11th and 12th). I am signed up for the 12th. This is a free class and it fills up really quickly. / Also, check out the Zoo photography classes. I have taken some of these and they are quite well done. / If anyone is attending any of these workshops, please post a note under this journal and we will try to meet up. Four of us went to the Japanese Garden last weekend for a Workshop. The trees are just starting to bloom.

My first week on RedBubble Sept 14 - 21 2007

Never blogged or journaled online before so here goes… / In this little corner of the world on the eastern coast…of the South Island of New Zealand spring has finally sprung after a long and cold winter. The little cottage garden outside is waking up after its long hibernation and exploding with blossom and colour. The old plum tree looks like a canopy of white confetti and loud pink blousy blooms of camellias are now smoothering themselves over the 12 foot high bushes/trees. / On Monday the first ducklings of the season appeared in the garden…mother duck proudly showing me she had 11 fluffy followers. These numbers have already started to drop sadly, as neighbourhood cats, mine included are very attracted to them. I did successfully retrieve one from the jaws of my tabby Sam…and even managed after some searching to reunite it with a distraught mum. / Tulips, bluebells and daffodils pop up here and there and the sun has been shining this week a little more than normal. / I’ve been raising seeds assorted herbs and tomatoes on the indoor window sills..it is still too risky to put anything outside, as the fear of frosts is not over. / I completed two small paintings this week. It was an experiment in using a limited palette. Both paintings were of feet…ballet dancers feet. The colours I used were Titanium white and Raw Umber…quite surprising how just two colours can create so many tones. / I sold 6 paintings over the last 6 weeks…at two large annual exhibitions, one in Auckland and the other in Wellington. I sometimes wonder where mypaintings end up..the kind of homes they go to. Imagine if you could tag them to find out! / I have really enjoyed my first week on RedBubble, found lots of supportive, creative people out there and look forward to seeing and sharing my work with you all. / There is a cloud of waxeyes outside my window as I type this, greenfinches/goldfinches busily eating seed from the feeders in the garden…and this morning I was woken up my the a very impressive song from a grey warbler…so happy spring is here. Enjoy your week.
