  • The Cloister World / ______ Higher quality image Here ______ This photo was done during a one-day trip to the fascinating city of Évora. Classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site, one can easily get amazed at the diversity and quantity of historic buildings, including Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. / ................................................................................. / This is one of those special places where, on a weekend, without the noise of cars and the crowds, you can forget present time, and feel immersed somewhere in the past, when beauty was cherished, and schedules were not a concern. / ................................................................................ / One of the places I’ve visited was the amazing Cathedral of Évora, and one of it’s strongest surprises: an exquisite and captivating cloister. / ................................................................................. / Cloisters have always fascinated me. In the past they were the place, inside a monastery, where the fusion of nature and men was strongest. Four cold stone corridors and a garden in the center, adorned with profound meditation, trying to reach the highest answers. / ................................................................................. / During the first 15 minutes I had some strong clouds in the sky, but the sun was uncovered and very strong. I tried to capture some photos, trying to properly expose both the building and the sky, but this proved to be impossible, even with ND Grads. Fortunately, mother nature helped, and the clouds finally covered the sun. Not only this helped in getting a correct exposure of the scene, but also lended a very special lightning to the whole scene, much different from the harsh light I had 15minutes before. This was the time to start shooting, and in 10 minutes I was able to cover some shooting angles I had planned beforehand. Here you can see one of them, hoping the image will be able to “capture” you into that magical place… / .................................................................................... / José Ramos

  • Ukai Toriyama is a restaurant complex beneath Mount Takao in Japan.

  • mixed media on wood. 24” x 36” nothing grows here any more. / the cold gravel just bounces the moon’s light back to the sky. / i speak words lost in the sound of echoes. / reflection… a few days ago, i was searching through some fcp video files on my computer when I crossed something interesting. it was a time-lapse of myself working on this and 2 other paintings (“time buries spring weather” and “passage between here and home”). i was still smoking back in those days and apparently pabst blue ribbon was my beer of choice. this particular painting was a completely differnt thing when i started but i painted over it. i wonder if the ghost of the original painting still haunts this one…

And bitter was the darkness that befell the bloomless rose. Only after this earth has been bathed in its holy baptism / shall it become the glorious garden it was truly meant to be.” excerpts from The Prophet’s Candle by Daniel Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / This is a composite of two images taken at the same coastal location on Ke’anae Peninsula at the same time stitched together with Smoky City Design – The Panorama Factory software. / Shooting Date/Time 16 April 2007 20:32:35 / Flash Off Shutter Speed 1/250 Aperture10.0 ISO 400 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

  • / / / original pencil drawing ...stayed up very late drawing “Nature’s Child”... you know when it’s time for a baby to be born, i think it’s very similar with art… the inspiration just comes when it’s ready…and sometimes that means drawing til 3am like i did with this one. ...the drawing took about 3 hours, and the digital colouring took about 5 hours today. ...inspired by some fantastic eyes i’ve seen lately, (drawn by people on RB) and the dear little willy wagtails…they are so cheeky…they aren’t authentic in colour here, because they are always black and white with little markings above the eye…but i have put their essence into the work hopefully. I think this is my favourite so far :) /

  • Starfish stranded on a pebble beach

  • Worth clicking Large to see all the stars. 30 second exposure of a moving cloudbank backlit by the moon between two pinnacles in the Gardens of Stone National Park (isn’t that the coolest name for a NP?). Taken around midnight. First new landscape pic for a while. A friend invited me to another friend’s birthday in this amazing location. I’ve never been to this area on the other side of the Blue Mountains and was just gobsmacked as we drove down this valley with these majestic mountains rising on either side. I spotted this vantage point on the way in and as the party wore on snuck away to get some shots and was presented with this vista as I rolled up in the car. Managed to get about 15 mins in before it started to sleet. Man it was freezing with the wind coming off the late snow. The party was in an old art deco hotel being lovingly restored by this young couple and their six(!) children (oldest 11!!) Can’t believe the energy some people have or their vision. This hotel is located in a near-deserted old shale mining town at the end of a valley you can only access by dirt road about 4 hours from Sydney. It was all quite surreal – particularly when some of the girls at the party heard I was a photographer and decided they wanted to do a Norman Lindsay style “bacchanalia” photoshoot at the end of the night – just hilarious but OMG working with drunk models is hard work – “sit still”, “stop giggling” – never again! Still I managed to do both my favourite styles of photography in one night so it’s churlish to complain. Canon 1Ds Mk III / Tv: 30 secs / Av: f/3.2 / ISO: 1600
