In the bestiary there’s also a garden. It’s walled off though, so the beasts can’t trample it! I loved painting the undulating fin shapes of this piece, so I had to do another. 15×30cm, watercolour, chalk pastel, ink, conte, iridescent pigments and copper leaf on canvas. Vincent’s Cat Recently I’ve been looking at Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings. I love his irises and wanted to paint some myself. Their complicated forms and brilliant deep blues captivated me. As some of you may know I have a fondness for cats. During my life I have had two exceptional ginger cats ‘Victor’ and ‘Mittens’ who were very dear to me; this is dedicated to their memory. Some time back, I visited Newstead Abbey in Notinghamshire. It is the former home of the writer Lord Byron. We had a nice family day out, walking around the grounds and into the designed gardens. I took this shot in the Japanese garden. I had to lay down on the muddy bridge to get this shot and several more like it, but it was worth getting dirty. / / / original pencil drawing ...stayed up very late drawing “Nature’s Child”... you know when it’s time for a baby to be born, i think it’s very similar with art… the inspiration just comes when it’s ready…and sometimes that means drawing til 3am like i did with this one. ...the drawing took about 3 hours, and the digital colouring took about 5 hours today. ...inspired by some fantastic eyes i’ve seen lately, (drawn by people on RB) and the dear little willy wagtails…they are so cheeky…they aren’t authentic in colour here, because they are always black and white with little markings above the eye…but i have put their essence into the work hopefully. I think this is my favourite so far :) /

Even the Cheshire Cat and Tinman have a spot in the sun there :)
