IN THE GARDEN
Summer has awoken the colour and life in my garden :-) / .

Drawings of faces and man and plants and flower in charcoal, then digitized and digitally painted. Then thrown into the digital blender.
A fading bloom in my garden… the petals would curl up at the end of it’s life cycle.

30”x 40” acrylic on Number 80 Bainbridge Board cold-pressed. I used gesso to cover the beginnings of something I had started a long time ago. I have been working on this off and on for the past couple of weeks…...... between giving time to two grandsons, ten cats, and a dog. First large painting, and first flowers I have done in a while. My inspiration has been all the wonderful florals I have seen on RedBubble! There are so many beautiful paintings and drawings on this site….....all are an inspiration for me to paint and draw again.
The Chaffinch is one of my favourite garden birds. They are colourful, cheeky and have a lovely warbling song that always puts me in mind of springtime. This little fella, photographed in our “white out” the other day, looks to be a youngster as the top of his head is not the typical pure grey. If there are any birdie experts out there who could clarify this, I would be much obliged! Canon EOS 50D with Canon EOS 400mm L f/5.6 handheld
“Show me your garden and I shall tell you what you are.” ~ ALFRED AUSTIN This is my Secret Garden. My work of the last 2 years has culminated at this point. This piece is so very complex, but I will try to explain it to you. This is me. I am from the earth, of the earth, striving to save the earth. She is me, I am her. I live in the country on Kangaroo Island (Australia), surrounded by nature. I have wild kangaroos in my front yard every night, koalas in my trees, and my son Henley and I walk every day, and celebrate the amazing place we live. This nature has engulfed my being. On average, I have been taking about 100 images with my Canon PowerShot camera every single day for the past two years. Macro bugs, macro wildflowers, skies, dead trees, birds, flowers, shells, leaves, images from my orchard, burnt trees from the bushfires, dried up drought-affected dam bases, kangaroos, and of course, my son Henley. So many images have gone into this one piece. There are two worlds here. The abundant and thriving; and the dying, the gone forever. Our house was surrounded by devastating bushfires in Dec 2007 – a time I will never forget. Nothing but smoke could be seen out the windows. This land is vulnerable and changing for the worse every year as a result of Global Warming. It is an issue so very close to my heart because it is on my doorstep. What will this world be like for my child and all the children of now? Famine, drought, heat waves, extreme weather patterns and natural catastrophes, massive bushfires, more war, no jobs, no money, more disease, more animals extinct forever, less trees and rainforests, less farmers, less food. We are seeing it now. Something has to be done. My forehead shows a migraine I recently had during a heatwave. It felt like a penetrating light was entering my eye and illuminating half of my brain before exiting at the base of my skull where the vision centre of the brain is. It was very powerful to me. Vision. Have the vision before the world dies. Mother Earth is dying, as is half of me. What are you doing to help the earth survive? It’s up to our generation, or there will be nothing left. Your thoughts on this topic are most welcome…. These are the same roses from Valentine’s Day with the velvetly petals. I adjusted the white balance on my camera before shooting to give it a bluish tone. It looks like crushed eyeshadow to me…:D Shot with a sigma 105mm macro, indoors with flash. Enjoy!
Honeyeater captures a view of one of these beautiful yet shy birds at the National Botanic Gardens in Canberra. Behind the scenes / Too many times, I’ve missed a great shot of birds like this one because of hesitation. I’ve waited, my finger poised on the shutter button for the perfect shot. To capture this image, I tried a different tactic, shooting many frames rapidly capturing the bird in a variety of poses. This was one of the successful shots, capturing the bird in a fantastic posture it held for only a split second. / Canon 1Ds mkIII | EF 100-400mm | 1.4x Extender Artwork / This is a striking image and an ideal addition to any decor. The subject creates a focal point while soft colours ensure it isn’t imposing. Take it home, to the office or share it as a gift! © 2009 A Spence. All Rights Reserved
/ “Still Life with Wellingtons” is another of my larger works that I promised to start adding to my RB gallery…just finished today, it has all the components of my favourite style of painting; lots of texture, trompe l’oeil, and a touch of surrealism in the subject matter…the shiny boots contrast nicely with the rough wood and the rusty nail….it will fit in perfectly with the Spring Fever collection, but really belongs with the Portfolio collection…the whole is totally imagined…I created the wood panel as I went along and it was such fun, I had to restrain myself from adding more knots…I found Elizabeth Bishop’s words to be truly an inspiring accompaniment to the painting”... Watercolour on Saunders Waterford Rough paper… “It was cold and windy, scarcely the day / to take a walk on that long beach / Everything was withdrawn as far as possible, / indrawn: the tide far out, the ocean shrunken, / seabirds in ones or twos. / The rackety, icy, offshore wind / numbed our faces on one side; / disrupted the formation / of a lone flight of Canada geese; / and blew back the low, inaudible rollers / in upright, steely mist.” Elizabeth Bishop, The End of March / The Sap Bucket
/ A new addtion to the Still Life series, “Still Life with Old Dandelion Stencil and Terracotta Pots” pays tribute to the lovely art of stenciling that experienced a resurgence in the 80s then got overexposed and trite…well know in Europe for centuries, in North America itinerant stencillors made a good living going from town to town with their tools…evidence of their beautiful work still remains today and is shown in museums around the world... / I chose to infuse this painting with the flavour of an old garden room, where the plaster has fallen off and the single stencil though greatly worn with age still looks beautiful…the terracotta pots which are so delightful to paint, add to the feeling of age…I have a number of these ancient pots, and though they are still under wraps right now, I know them so well I think I can reproduce them in my sleep... Watercolour on Saunders Waterford Rough Paper… Art is long and time is fleeting… / Lives of great men all remind us / We can make our lives sublime, / And, departing, leave behind us / Footprints on the sands of time. Longfellow… / Still Life with Wellingtons / The Sap Bucket
I am sooooo pleased that I planted this Crab Apple tree nearly 20 years ago when we moved into our (then) brand new home. The tree has grown up to provide a wonderful haven for all our garden birds, large and small alike – winter and summer. Today it was full of fledgling birds – starlings, blackbirds, sparrows, (even a squirrel!) and cuties like this Great Tit (parus major) – all waiting, preening, dozing (hard life being a baby bird) and begging for food! Wish I could share it all with you but this one guy will have to serve as the ambassador for the cause! Difficult to get shots now the leaves are on the trees, but this one obliged! Allow me to introduce “the Wormster” and one of his fledgling blackbirds, having lunch today. Wormie got his name because he’d frequently follow me around my back garden with a beak full of worms. This was apparently his way of dropping a hint to me to put out dried worms and suet nibbles for him to feed his babies. Often when I go into the garden Wormie is out there cheeping persistently at me for his favourite menu. He normally sits on top of our garden shed, the lamppost or in the hanging baskets, and has even hopped right into our kitchen and onto the draining board demanding attention! He really is a busy fellow and dedicated dad…. Canon EOS 50D with Canon EF 70-200mm L f/4
