Gandhi is commonly known around the world as Mahatma Gandhi (Sanskrit: महात्मा mahātmā or “Great Soul”, an honorific first applied to him by Rabindranath Tagore), and in India also as Bapu . He is officially honoured in India as the Father of the Nation; his birthday, 2 October, is commemorated there as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence. Later he campaigned for the British to Quit India. Gandhi spent a number of years in jail in both South Africa and India. As a practitioner of ahimsa, he swore to speak the truth and advocated that others do the same. Gandhi lived modestly in a self-sufficient residential community and wore the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, woven with yarn he had hand spun on a charkha. Rama, the Lord of heavens / Blessed is thy name Victory to you Ram / The husband of Sita / Oh so lovable, joyous / It is to worship thee… Some of us call you as Shiva / and some others as Allah / but we beg you Lord / that you bless us all….... Song of Rama was one of Gandhi’s favourite poems and I end this with one of his quotes….. When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall.. think of it, always….... Gandhi who was a Spiritual leader and activist, gained a following because of his ideas on peace. I admire him greatly and dedicate this painting to him.
