Oil on canvas 100 X 100 cm. Completed 1999. For more information or to purchase prints please visit: / www.RainbowPathArtStudio.com “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one” – Albert Einstein It is so amazing how some paintings come into being and the effect they have on the unsuspecting viewer. In 1997 I was painting with a group of like-minded artists for an upcoming exhibition. One of the artists was a beautiful soul by the name of Greg Grace. Greg was a good friend of mine whose work I greatly admired. One day Greg was showing me some of his latest drawings and when I saw a sketch of the Gateway, I was blown away. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen, affecting me very deeply. I wanted to take it home to look at, every day. So I came up with a great solution, I would paint it! I approached Greg with the idea and much to my surprise he agreed. Greg liked the way I painted and felt that my style of painting would very much suit and enhance the powerful energy emanating from the mandala. He gave me the original drawing from which I worked. I absolutely loved painting the mandala. Painting the mandala in the dot style is the most effective and energetically powerful way of transmitting the essence of Gateway. The energy was so powerful at times that I could not work on the painting for more that a couple of hours a day. The original drawing was only of the mandala; I added the cosmic background because that’s where the gateway existed. When I look at the mandala in a meditative way I go through it to other dimensions. Intuitively, I sense that the Gateway exists within the middle star of the belt of Orion, and is the primary star-gate to multi- dimensional levels and universes. Every one of my friends who came to look at Gateway had a unique experience.

Since our dawn, man has always looked to the stars to make sense of the chaos that we create. And to me, it only seems fitting that our future should lie beyond our own planet, if we don’t mess it all up first. The main tone underlying this work is that we should look at our history in order to understand our future – and I’ve used the Mayans as a reference to the good and bad things that we have achieved. I’d like to think that this being dominating the artwork could very well be us, in our own creation of what we believe as interstellar beings. Kind of like life imitating art. The dome of his head is actually Mars, a planet many have speculated that could be an older version of our own Earth and a glimpse into our future. Behind the his head, and also tattooed on his brow, is part of the very advanced Mayan long-count calendar, which runs out on the 22nd December 2012 – a date that many historians are looking forward to, especially given today’s fragile climate. Some speculate that it could mark an approximate date to the end of life as we know it. Which ties in with other totally unrelated theories about our oil crisis, global warming, and so on. / In his eyes, he sees a horizon of fire which symbolizes the earth cleansing itself, although we’d see it as mass destruction. This is synonomous with our understanding of the Mayan civilization and how it overpopulated and crumbled under the high demand of such an over-indulgent society. The moon shots are from the recent lunar eclipse. I included this because the moon plays such an important part in our life, and the stabalisation of the planet – it moves away from the Earth at just under 4cm each year. Finally, I’ve used the Mayan Chichen Itza temple at the bottom of the piece as a stairway to the heavens, common with Mayan, Egyptian, and other beliefs.

A bunch of little bits from the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, if you’re that way inclined. / The orange is actually a yellow and red halftone, it’s not showing well on the preview :(

Dew drops on a spider web on a barb wire fence. Viewed from just below so as to only see sky behind it and the drops reflecting an upside down pic of the sky and land. I couldn’t see this with the naked eye – it was only when I got in close and down low with the macro lens that I saw it through the view finder. It reminded me of planets suspended in a galaxy and that there is a whole different world out there to be viewed through a macro lens.

NEW PILGRIMS / OIL ON STRETCHED CANVAS / $900 US (12” X 16” ORIGINAL) / SIGNED DEDICATED PRINTS AVAILABLE I have always wondered exactly what is over that next mountain? What new adventure is awaiting my arrival? And when can I leave? It has always been that way with me. I’m not exactly sure why but it is the lure of travel and new vistas that has always captured my heart. Age has not diminished that lure. Age has actually made the temptation greater. Time, it would appear, limits me to one life and there is so much to see and so much to do that I find myself wishing for more minutes in the hour, more days within the week, more months within the year and if at all possible more life’s to live. So I have constructed a means, a way, a ruse to cheat Time. I can travel to places far, far away visit with whomever I wish and whenever I desire. Places that no one yet has seen. I can travel far into the future or if I wish I can go back deep within the past. The remarkable thing is that how I do this is not unique. I see it done, mostly by young children, when they play. This trickery, this means by which I travel is simply my imagination and with it I can do the most wonderful of things. By allowing myself to dream I can be transported anywhere and at any time I wish. So with my brushes and my oils I have traveled deep into the future where I beheld the most wonderful of sights. There before my gaze were the “new pilgrims”. They were landing on the shores of a “new world”. Brave new adventurers, romantics, and daredevils all. Not fearing the unknown. Intrepid explorers going where no one had gone before. So what a wonderful gift the Creator has given to me. The gift of imagination. When I feel too “adult” all I need to do is spend some time with some very young explorers. Children are the greatest of explorers, as they see for the first time the wonderful gift of imagination. What a joy it is to see them fashion new, vibrant ideas with supple minds that are open to all new discoveries. They leave “no stone unturned” as they explore everything and everywhere. Their minds are like “clean slates” waiting to be filled with the abundance of Creation. visionary imagist “Joey”

VIEW LARGE PLEASE Micon can see through time and space and find anyone he loves. Here he longs for the guardians of the gate. These two are his playful mother Ullan and her lover Sami.. They are suspended in time in a village called Wassnt. Back home there are those that must defend the planet by always being awake to danger.. Ullan voulenteered to be suspended in time and then her lover did the same.. They are always awake and use their powers of ‘feeling out’ to warn the Armies of VELORUM of any impending danger. Being suspended in time gives them the ability to always be awake. She misses her Micon and knows when he is looking in.. when he is looking in she always tries to be happy.. for she misses her boy very much.

Tutorial: Photographing the Milky Way with a standard DSLR camera
by Cain DohertyDue to the home page feature and requests to understand how I developed my image Milky Way from Apollo Bay...
Due to the home page feature and requests to understand how I developed my image Milky Way from Apollo Bay with a Canon 350D and a wide angle lens, I’ve decided to put together a basic tutorial. For this to be repeatable you must be shooting with clear dark skies, free from light pollution. The settings I used on my camera are detailed with the image. A shutter release cable is also a great tool and can keep your camera clicking as it sits on the tripod. The more images taken, the better for the final result, because this will improve the signal to noise ratio that plagues digital sensors during long exposures. A tracking mount is not necessary with a 20 second shutter speed because the rotation of the night sky is undetectable at such a wide angle. Please read the following steps for more information. All images are hyperlinked to larger sizes. 1) Save unaligned images to drive 2) Load them into hugin_0.7_beta_4 which is available here. 3) Manually align images with control points – don’t automatically align. I aligned three images to a common one. Click the screenshot for details. 4) Click Edit – fine tune all points 5) Click View – preview window 6) Click Center and Fit buttons to achieve this view 7) Click Edit – Optimise 8) Click Stitcher – image format – multiple tiff . Final screen before clicking Stitch Now . 9) Prealigned images available here 10) Load each image onto a new layer in photoshop adjusting the blend mode to screen which is good at lightening images without lightening the darkest areas 11) Add a medium contrast curves layer 12) Add colour balance layer: shadows (-90,-25,-10), midtones (-15,-5,-20), highlights (0,-5,30) 13) The final result For comparison’s sake, shown below is a typical accompanying jpeg to a raw file I began with for one of the individual images. I used Adobe Camera Raw to extract the jpegs provided in step 1 for processing. In closing, I’d like to point out this is not the only way an image like this can be captured; there is myriads of possibilities. I have developed this simple and inexpensive method by just experimenting with the tools at my disposal. Comments are welcomed. If you haven’t done so already, please check out another tutorial I have written: Layer Masks and Transparency Gradients for The Heart.

The workings of a frustrated creative mind gone temporarily insane… Too many tangents, too many ideas. Too many thoughts trying to cram their way into an already overcrowded space. A peek into my inner tumultuous subconcious. The working title for this was A Crisis of Faith – In Myself Of course I’m out of my mind…. It’s dark and scary in there! I think a prolonged hibernation is in order.
