This is a photograph from my ‘old’ film days. I am an instrument rated pilot myself, so photographing these guys is like old home-week for me. My intention here was to capture the intensity and thrill of the take-off. B&W was chosen because I believe it is the finest medium for communicating an idea. This way the texture and compositional element of color doesn’t get in the way. This is a WWI aircraft from that war and there’s a place up the Hudson Valley in NY State called Rhinebeck where there is a ‘museum’ and they fly quite a number of aircraft from that era. The camera used was a Mamiya RZ67 II with the 360mm lens set for f8 @ 1/250th with a No.8 Yel filter, with the tripod being used as a monopod.
