Horseshoe Bay – Bermagui The 10th Bermagui Seaside Fair was held on Saturday 10 March 2007 and what a spectacular event it turned out to be. Thousands of locals from the region were proud as punch to partake and witness a fun-filled day of activities. Festivities commenced on the main wharf at the Bermagui Boat Harbour at 8am with the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony. Bishop Allan Ewing conducted the blessing and also addressed the gathering of locals regarding their continued dedication in making the annual festival a continued success. During the ceremony, the dapper dressed gentlemen from the Bermagui Probus Club Men’s Choir sang hymns, and other local singers and musicians performed. The majority of events were conducted at the Dickinson Oval precinct and a large crowd attended. Bermagui Seaside Fair announcer, June Tarlinton, said “They estimate there will be around 10,000 people and judging from what I’m seeing, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are fairly close to the mark.” “The street parade is extremely popular,” said June when referring to the amount of participants and spectators. “The Bega Vintage Car Club has forty cars involved this year and they’ve never had this many ever. The way the cars have been restored is awesome.” As part of the fair each year the Bermagui Citizen of the Year is announced. This year’s recipient of the award was Candy Craine, who was recognised for her tireless work in caring for sick and injured native animals on her property. June Tarlinton said “Candi Craine was nominated by persons within the community and she was a very worthy recipient of the award.” “She has put a lot of effort into rehabilitating animals since the loss of her husband.” Candi is also an avid photographer and she exhibited many of her quality wildlife photographs at the photographic exhibition at the Bermagui Country Club during the Seaside Fair. Celebrity entertainers, Frankie J Holden and Michelle Pettigrove, were invited to perform and compere the Bermagui Idols competition. The competition catered for local talent and the performers came out in droves to strut their stuff on stage for the gathered throng. Winner of the Bermagui Idol primary school age section was the highly talented nine-year-old Sophie Halliday, who performed a cover version of the song Who Knew by Pink. Judging for the competition was carried out in a novel way, and this was done by gauging the level of audience applause when each contestant’s name was announced. When Sophie’s name was announced, the applause and screaming was deafening. You could have come to the conclusion that her family in attendance numbered 500. She was undoubtedly the star of this year’s Bermagui Idol competition. Young local band, Overdrive, belted out a few tunes for the large and receptive crowd. The street parade, sponsored by Australian regional and rural broadband internet provider, activ8me, was a roaring success as it made its way along the spectator-lined one kilometre stretch of Lamont Street. The Batemans Bay Soldiers Club Pipe Band lead the colourful parade which included floats representing local schools, various community groups, the Bega Vintage Car Club, SES and Rural Fire Service, Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club members, Bermagui CWA and street performers. Novelty events were conducted for kids, and kids at heart, with the Chuck-A-Tuna competition proving more than a handful for participants. A little bending of the rules by some was detected, however it all added to the fun and frivolity of the afternoon. Local Aboriginal dance group, Gulaga Dancers, were in attendance and performed traditional style dances for the crowd. Carnival rides, a spectacular fireworks display in the evening over Horseshoe Bay, and a sandcastle competition were also part of the day’s festivities. Dozens of stalls were erected on Dickinson Oval with stallholders exhibiting and selling local produce and products, advertising local and regional services and businesses, and supplying food and beverages for the masses. On Endeavour Point Headland, Sculpture on the Edge featured sculptures by Alan Watt, Richard Moffatt, Michael Le Grand and the provocative Melbourne sculptor Greg Taylor. Bermagui, approximate population 1120, is situated in the gorgeous Sapphire Coast region of New South Wales and is renowned as one of the best, if not the best, places for marlin fishing in Australia. It’s also home to a fishing fleet, and is close to Montague Island which hosts numerous animal species. Other local attractions in Bermagui are the scenic Horseshoe Bay, the Bermagui Boat Harbour where you can witness the unloading of the catch of the day, and the Bermagui Blue Pool. The historic Bermagui Beach Hotel exhibits fishing memorabilia in the main bar, lounge and dining areas. It’s also a top spot for a soothing ale or lemonade. Meals are hearty and excellent value for money. High quality accommodation at affordable rates is available at the Bermagui Beach Hotel and the ultra modern Harbourview Motel. Bermagui is a friendly and scenic seaside town located 378 kilometres south of Sydney, Australia. Put it on your list of must see places – it’s a gem. As it is school holidays and I am always looking for ways to entertain the kids – I thought what better way than to put them in front of the camera. I mean what little girl doesn’t love dressing up? And the bonus…I get to practice my photography!!! The girls had an absolute ball and I have ended up with over 300 photos. My dilema now is choosing the best ones as there are so many great shots!! I thought I would share 4 of my favourites with you…

Hien is one of those wedding photographers you tell all your engaged friends about. I know that one day when someone makes an honest woman out of me, I’ll be a-knocking at his door. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when he invited me to come along to a ‘Trash the Dress’ shoot and spread my creative vibes and help with art direction. And like I could pass up the chance to watch a couple of lovely normal individual’s run amok with paint and scissors? It all started off fairly normal and wedding like… Then we had a change of scenery… There was some pleading… But it was futile. The idea of getting covered in paint and ripping apart a perfectly good wedding dress was just too delicious to pass up :) Twas a big bunch of fun Hien. Thanks for inviting me along for the ride.

Yesterday (Sunday 25th May, 2008) the Pakenham Camera Club were invited to attend the offical opening of the new Pakenham Fire Station. / The Pakenham CFA, which is fully manned by volunteers, marched out of their old station at John Street, Pakenham to march into their new station on the Princess Hwy in Pakenham. / Normally our President of the PCC, takes the CFA’s group photo’s, but due to him being away in the UK, I was asked to take them, with my partner in crime Mary Broome. / It was a wonderful day, fun for all that attended! Here are a few pics from the day…mostly their group shots. I have included some fun stuff also.

Wow! Another enlightening, amazing week has gone by at home and on my RedBubble world. I have gathered and learned so much on this we site, and even more to my surprise made some wonderful acquaintances with folks from EVERYWHERE. I am even able to now belong to a group for people with disabilities. THAT spells freedom for me. When I saw it, I became choked up. I feel like I am now validated as a person to be taken seriously….maybe I didn’t put that well, but it is an issue all people with many challenges have to deal with. Self worth. I have run across many wonderful groups to join. I am going to have a lot of fun. I do mean fun. Art for me IS exciting and fun. My cup runneth over with exuberance! LOL :D .............More of Life On That Hiway, ya know??!!

Drum roll please, / having a little fun here tonight…...champagne in hand….. I have decided that after facing down some negativity of late, and a few personal hardships, maybe the universe is now smiling and rewarding me for my continual “belief” and for holding onto the “stuff” I dream of. It has been a rewarding month for me, so far as my art is concerned…. My images have been honoured by Features in various groups…. / THANK YOU to the / “All Things Ancient Egyptian” group, / the “Dolphins and Whales” group, / “The Healing Journey” group and the / “Abstract Digital Art and Writing Group”...... for the features…... “The Line of Bast” was featured in All things Ancient Egyptian “Exhilarate!” was featured in the group Dolphins & Whales “Believe” was featured in the group The Healing Journey “Kylee” was featured in the group All things Ancient Egyptian “I Had A Dream” was featured in the group The Healing Journey “Trinity” was featured in the group ABSTRACT DIGITAL ART AND WRITING On a grander note, the opening of the new ArtGeo gallery in Busselton was celebrated this month, with the “SIGNATURE SOUTH WEST” exhibition, and a first prize of $10,000. (YES…ten big ones!!) / (No, of course I did not win that one ha ha) / Congratulations go to Philip Berry for taking out the major prize, awarded by three PERTH judges, but the thrill of the night was that in an exhibition of 86 works from top local and state artists, I received a Highly Commended for my artwork, which truly was a great honour, considering the amazing standard of work presented and the talented company I was in. And now, tonight was the Awards Night for this year’s Annual Busselton Photography contest, run by our Chamber of Commerce. Three talented professional photographers – Christian Fletcher, Roger Clark and Derek Poole were the judges and I was thrilled to come home with a First Prize (Digital Art) and a Highly Commended for two of my images that made it to the finals. In the Public choice awards, voted on by the people of the region, I also got a Third Place….. / so…... I have just had a glass or two of champers and wish to share my happy news with my good friends at Redbubble…... / So raising my glass, thank you for your friendship, support and inspiration….. / Cheers!

  • Ring flash test shoot (beware, stupid face pulling within)
    by Jo O'Brien

So bringing my new toy home for the first time resulted in …

So bringing my new toy home for the first time resulted in lots of random and fairly uninteresting shots. While the guys worried about F stops and technical stuff, I proceeded to poke stupid faces shouting “take one of me! take one of me!!!” This is my now encyclopedic knowledge of taking photos with a ring flash, for your enjoyment, and my embarrassment. / Plucking your eyebrows is a must with a ring flash. In fact, if you have any skin insecurities, probably best to stay on the other side of it. (The photographer side that is) You’ll also notice that it gives you a crazy circle light in your eyes, kind of like you are possessed. I thought that was ace. / Because the light goes in a big circle around the lens, you can pretty much cover the whole thing with hair, or possibly other things, and it still manages to light everything up. I thought that was ace too. / In fact, lack of shadows is probably my favourite thing about it. You can flash someone straight on, even if they are having a girly hissy fit backed up against a wall, and there are no severe shadows behind them. / And you can take photos through blinds, bars and fabric without casting shadows on your subject. John’s a good sport and let us trap him between the blinds and the door to test out this theory. I reckon John is a bit ace too. / This whole “no shadows” business means it’s also great for taking photos inside things, which is also ace. / even inside your nose / And James thought that was ace. Just see how happy he is!

UPCOMING: Adelaide Photographers MeetUp About five weeks ago half-a-dozen Adelaide photographers converged on the Adelaide Zoo for a day of networking, social chitchat and LOTs of photography. This time I’m organising a “City-Walk” where we walk, talk and shoot architecture and objects. Here is the area of the city I’d be interesting in walking.. Yes, this is a large area! I happily walk around ALL day, photographing people, architecture and oddities. DID YOU COME TO SEE THE LIST OF ATTENDEES? You can view it here . Moved for easy-viewing. EDIT: 11:29 PM 17/05/2009 Big thanks to everyone who has responded and is interested: The date has been decided: 31st May Here is the plan for the day: Between 11.00am-12.00noon – Meet at Rotunda on Elder Park. / We all know it, surely. Early arrivals can scope out a good place to watch everyone arriving and get their portrait shots! (I’ll be there at 11.00am!) 12noon – 12.45pm / Walk up KW Road to North Terrace, turning right at Parliament House down toward the Casino/Train Station. Quick visit into the atrium to photograph. It is permitted, I’ve done this on Flickr-group meetups. Continue down North Terrace to the Morphett Road Bridge. 12.45pm – 4.00pm / OPTION 1: / We turn right, crossing the bridge, walking all the way to War Memorial Drive. Those that wish to can take the stairs (just beyond the river that takes you) down to the Torrens … and we all meetup just in front of the Tennis Stadium (or thereabouts). We walk and photograph the length of War Memorial Drive, back across the bridge at KW Road, back to the Rotunda. We then walk up KW Street. From here, read from where option #2 is underlined. OPTION 2. / Just before the bridge, we cross over to photograph the historic Church. (You’ll know it when you get there!) We then walk up Morphet Street, turn LEFT into Hindley Street and we walk and photograph interesting sites along the way. There are few interesting locations behind buildings, (particularly those toy-cars stuck to the wall in Rosina Street) that we can detour to see. When we reach KW Street, we cross over to Rundle Mall to go shoot the Brass Pigs and the Silver Balls! At Pultney Street, we turn left; At North Terrace, we turn left (Some may choose to cross the road). / Photographing historic limestone architecture along the way, we head back to the KW Road intersection, taking the pedestrian lights over to Government House. Here I can show you some interesting facts that I discovered a few years back that is not-overly-publicised! / We then cross the road to Parliament House, and walk back to the Rotunda Wait, wait, you want food and drinks: At some point in Hindley Street or Rundle Mall we find a nice coffee shop! Considering all the chatting and stopping that normally occurs with these events, this will surely fill the afternoon. If anyone knows of any events happening in the CBD that are happening the same weekend, tell us about it now so we can jostle it into the timeline. EXTRA (courtesy of Michael Tapping) / Government House and Grounds are open to the Public on Sunday 31st May between 10.00 AM and 4.00PM / We’ll go there from the Rotunda before moving into the CBD. This may take some time! Tag word for event is asacitywalkmay2009

I know this is very short notice, but i have only just decided to do this so thought i would put a journal here in case there are any other photographers in Sydney who are interested in coming along. I am looking at having an informal photography meet-up at The Cumberland State Forest (95 Castle Hill Road, West Pennant Hills) on MONDAY 8th June 2009. / Another link I have had some interest so far from mainly macro photographers so it will be safe to assume that we will be focusing on Macro photography. This is not to say though that others are not invited as EVERYBODY is welcome to come along to a fun and enjoyable day out. It doesn’t matter what type of camera you use or if you are a beginner or professional photographer. It says the forest is open from 10am to 6pm on Public Holidays. / I am thinking of meeting at the information centre at about 10:10am so we can all meet and commence shooting by 10:30am. If you are interested in joining me, please reply to this journal or send me a bubble mail.

Hi, If you’re not too busy this Saturday (Oct 17th) i thought you might like to meet at Parramatta Park for a bit of a shoot. / There are rose gardens, historic buildings/monuments, cannons etc as well as parklands, the Parramatta River and the usual wildlife (ducks, herons, ibis, pigeons, bats, other bird life, lizards, skinks, water dragons, etc). Sorry about the short notice, but i guess last minute is better than nothing. I will be at The Rumsey Rose Garden to meet fellow photographers by about 9am. The Rose garden is on your left just after you come in the gates at the Pitt Street entrance. Please let me know if you will be able to make it. Kylie PS: I WILL have my two children with me but they shouldn’t be any trouble/distraction. They are usually good at helping me spot insects, lizards and other things of interest.
