Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved Cacatua moluccensis (Gmelin 1788) “Description: whitish salmon-pink; broad crest with whitish covering feathers and deep salmon-pink underlying crest; underside of wings salmon-pink; tail-feathers orange-yellow and pink at base; bill blackish; periophthalmic ring white with faint bluish tinge; iris blackish-brown; feet dark grey. Female sometimes with reddish tinge to iris; usually with smaller head and bill. Immatures as adults; young females mostly identifiable at one year by greyish-brown iris; adult iris colour attained by four years. Length: 52 cm (20.5 ins). Distribution: island of Ceram, Indonesia; extinct on nearby islands of Saparua and Haruku; once introduced to Ambon, but now disappeared again. Habitat: forest, open woodland , cleared areas with isolated groups of trees; tall secondary vegetation, mangroves and swamp areas to 1,000 m (3,300 ft). Status: Endangered because of extensive capture for trade; population possibly only 2,000 birds; additional threat through habitat loss. Habits: usually seen singly, in pairs or small groups; gatherings of up to 16 birds on roosting trees; mostly only observed in early morning or late afternoon on way from or to roosting places; pairs stay close together; can occasionally be seen grooming each other; prefers perching in tall trees; there only conspicuous when calling; noisy; can be heard from a distance; cautious and not approachable; powerful flight with rapid, shallow wing-beats interspersed with gliding; accompanied by constant calling; flight relatively slow and usually low. Natural diet: seed, fruits, berries, nuts and probably insects and their larvae; occasionally forages in coconut plantations where they bite open young coconuts to get at the milk and soft pulp content. Breeding behaviour: exact breeding season unknown; probably from July; nests in tall, dead trees; in one case 25 m (80 ft) above ground; no further information available; egg measures 50.0×33.4 mm (1.97×1.31 ins). Aviculture: fairly noisy cockatoo with pleasant character; especially noisy when excited, but also during early morning and late afternoon; initially shy; wild-caught birds often extremely nervous; will then often only leave nestbox to feed; however young birds quickly become confiding; very hard chewers; regular supply of wood necessary; rotten wood and planks quickly chewed; colony system only possible in very large flight; trouble-free and not susceptible when acclimatised. ” Information Source Lexicon of Parrots=

Another self portrait. Ya…I’m desperate for models. / Took a little work to mount the camera in the dash and eliminate any shake for the multiple exposure. A freshly paved road also helped! / If you can’t laugh at yourself…who can you laugh at? I meant to add this and forgot. This was my inspiration… My pappy said “Son your gonna drive me to drinkin’ / If you don’t stop driving that hot rod Lincoln” Have you heard the story of the hot rod race / Where the Fords and the Lincolns were setting the pace? / Well that story is true cause I’m here to say / I was driving that model A. It’s got a Lincoln motor and its really souped up / And that model A body makes it look like a pup / It’s got eight cylinders, uses them all / It’s got overdrive, just won’t stall It’s got a four barrel carb, and dual exhaust / With foureleven gears you can really get lost. / It’s got safety tubes, but I ain’t scared / Breaks are good, tires fair Pullin out of San Pedro late one night / With the moon and the stars just shinin bright / We was headed up grapevine Hill / Passing cars like they was standing still All of a sudden, in the wink of an eye / A Cadillac sedan passed us by / I said “Boys this ones marked for me” / But by then the tail lights was all you could see Now the fellas rid me for being behind / So I thought I’d let that Lincoln unwind / Took my foot of the gas and man alive / I shoved it on down into over drive Wound it up to 110 / My speedometer said I hit top end / My foot was glued like lead to the floor / That’s all there is, and there ain’t no more Now the boys all thought that I’d lost my sense / Those telephone poles looked like a picket fence / They said “Slow down, I see spots!” / The lines on the road just looked like dots Took a corner, side swiped a truck / Crossed my fingers just for luck / My fenders was clicking the guard rail post / The guy beside me was white as a ghost We had smoke coming from out of the back / When I started gainin on that Cadillac / I knew I could catch him, I thought I could pass / But don’t you know by then we’d be low on gas I had flames coming from out of the side / Feel the tension, man what a ride / I said “Look out boys, I’ve got a license to fly” / And that Caddy pulled over and let us by All of the sudden she started knocking / Down in the dips she started rocking / I looked in the mirror. This is part of a series i have put together. I am growing ever fascinated with childhood, their thoughts and in particular children’s literature, art and so-called amusement – there is always an intense darkness about it – so i have tried to create dark images visually and psychologically – i didn’t ask Abe to pose but was pleased his head was turned because now i hope we look through him and discover our own thoughts (Hope that makes sense to you).

My daughter allowed me six photographs before she became embarrassed and stopped the shoot. I attached camera to my bike helmet and pre-set the camera to fire on delay release. A bit hit and miss but managed this lovely picture. No wonder she was embarrassed! / Taken at Les Hoffman reserve in Dianella

Meg had fun posing, and Nanna had fun with the processing! Created with two photos and a few layers. Extracted the background from the legs, desaturated the colours, overlaid a photo of a texture and blended the background image through.
