So you want to try film?

Nowadays, a lot of people have taken photos only with digital cameras, but I’ve seen more than a few express an interest in film, wondering what the fuss is all about and why people still use it. Which then raises the question, “should I try film?” I have to say, the answer is, “YES!” But Uncle Stevie, the man in the camera shop told me film is dead. / Of course he did! They make more money selling a $2,000 digital camera than selling a roll of film. A lot of consumer level films have been killed off, but for the most part the pro ranges are intact, and these are the films you want to be playing with. In fact, they’re far from gone. Fuji has continued to develop its portrait films, has introduced a brand new slide film, and has reintroduced the discontinued Velvia 50 due to high demand. But Uncle Stevie, film is too expensive! / It really depends on what you’re doing. Shooting a two day event on film is expensive, hell yeah. That’s the sort of thing where digital comes into its own. But going out on the town, taking some artistic shots, it’s not so bad. / 36 frames is plenty. No, you can’t check the viewfinder and retake the shot 100 times until you get it. But what you can do is think about what you’re doing. Really look at the surrounds, see what’s in the viewfinder, think about your aperture and shutter speed, and just nail the shot the first time. / You can buy a brand new Nikon FM10 with lens for $200US. Plenty of fully automatic cameras are for sale second hand for next to nothing. Even with buying the film and getting it processed, even getting a high res scan done, it’s a lot of rolls before you match the cost of a digital, which you’ll probably replace after 18 months in any case. I’m worried I’ll get the exposure wrong, and I won’t know without an LCD! / You know how your digital camera has that awesome built in meter that gets the exposure just right every time? / Guess what. They were around before digital cameras. Film cameras have built in meters as well, there’s very little that will go wrong. dSLR cameras are designed after film SLR cameras, you just have a lot less buttons to worry about with your film camera! What film should I use? / You have three options. Slide/transparency film, colour negative and black and white negative. The colour negative is the typical film most people use/used which you take into the shop and get your photos in an hour. They all use the same chemical processing (C-41), these can be processed and printed in virtually any minilab. While you can get consumer films in this, I’d suggest going for something a little more. My personal favourite are the Fuji portrait films. There’s a huge range available and each with its own characteristics. Slide, or transparencies are just that. Often mounted and projected straight from the processed film, this is the product of choice for landscape photographers. Very fine grained, these tend to cost a bit more both to buy and process, but the results are well worth it. Films such as Velvia are highly saturated, making colours just pop out of the image, which is why it’s most often used for landscapes. You can have prints done from slides as well. This is the Ilfochrome/cibachrome process, with often stunning results. Like the film, it’s more expensive, but well worth it. Black and white is probably the easiest option for doing it all yourself. Films, developers, papers and whole darkroom set ups are readily available so you can be a part of the process from start to finish. This is where the magic of photography comes from, seeing an image appear in the dim light of the darkroom. It’s something special. / This is where the most fun is to be had as well. Unlike the other two film types, there’s not one single process to use. There’s a multitude of film developers, each giving a different result with different films. Variable development times also give different results. This continues with a range of different papers, each with different qualities to fine tune your final image. It sounds difficult, but you just need to start with one film, one developer and master that before trying other products and getting a look which suits. You can experiment and develop your own look, or learn what each result gives and apply the best one to the particular image. If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, there’s always photo labs which will do it for you! While the answer to should you try film is ‘yes’, there’s no definitive answer to any other question with film. It’s a matter of using the product which best suits what you want to get out of your image making. If at all possible, DO find a good pro lab. In my experience the staff are often very friendly and helpful, and provide a much better service than a minilab. The APUG forum is a great place to find information about film and processing, and it has regional forums too, so you can find people in your local area. Fuji’s film range and information can be found here Kodak here and Ilford’s website is a great resource not only for black and white photo products, but it also has a forum and other helpful information. So why not give film a go. Who knows, you might fall in love with the magic of film.

Hi everyone, i just want to share my good news, Im so so so chuffed because before i came here i created a profile on my camera’s brand website where you are ment to own a Fuji camera to create one. They run a themed competition every month and this month it was Love is…....... and you do the rest. A short synopsis of which DSLR should I buy
by Glenn Alderson PhotographyThankyou to everybody for your replys to my journal: / Which DSLR should I buy ?...
Thankyou to everybody for your replys to my journal: / Which DSLR should I buy ? If you havent seen all the feedback please take look. Its very interesting. Now where do I start ? / These are some of the sites you have recomended to have a look at / ephotozine.com / dpreview.com / photography-on-the.net / bhphotovideo.com / photozone Which brand is best ? / There are many to choose from, the top two are Canon & Nikon, followed by Pentax ,Fuji & Sony. / Once you have chosen a brand its a good idea to stick with that brand. As you buy lenses and build an expensive collection you only need to upgrade the body. Which model should I choose ? / Choose a model that feels good in your hand. Feel the grip & the weight as you play with it. Choose one that has the features you wish to use. No point buying one that has all the bells & whistles if you are not going to use them. How much should I pay ? / How much can you afford? There are some great cameras out there for all budgets. I like the idea of Buying a body that suits your budget & upgrade later when you can afford to. Then spend more on quality lenses. Maybe buy a second hand body & spend more on new quality lenses. I hope this has helped those of you who are in the market for a new DSLR. I’m still looking at the moment & have not decided on one. All this information has helped me to see what to look for. I hope to have a new toy soon. I will keep you updated with the decisions I make. If you buy a new camera soon, please let me know why you made this choice & share your story with everybody. Cheers, / Glenn / / PLEASE VIEW MY GALLERY @ Glenn Alderson Photography

Over-Processing can be fun

Most of my photography, at least the images that don’t get turned into black and white images, end up going on my website more or less as-is. Sure, like most people, I dabble with the curves and sharpen things up a little, that sort of thing; but mostly they remain looking more or less true to what was originally shot. Not that I’m opposed to lots of post-processing, far from it. Sometimes the results can end up looking very attractive. I think the following might be a case in point (it works for me anyway): As I type this my friend Tim is scanning the latest film from my Lubitel 166B. He threw a jpeg of the first scan over to me to have a look at (and it looks nice) and I had a quick mess around with it in Photoshop Elements. Not a deliberate attempt to produce something, just an idle play. And this is what happened: And I quite liked it. While I wouldn’t actually go with the above as the finished product of that shot (it looks nothing like the original and is horribly over-processed), I liked it enough that it was worth a quick upload. Once I’ve got the scanned tiff file I might even work on a version like this. The shadow behind the cloud is a really nice detail. I hadn’t even noticed that before I over-processed it.

Fuji Provia 100F Results

I’ve finally uploaded the results of the first roll of Fuji Provia 100F that I’ve put through the Lubitel 166B. Overall I’m pleased with the results. Out of the 12 images on the roll only 2 didn’t turn out as I’d hoped (and both were down to a metering cock-up on my part, both images show a scene, they just don’t show the scene how I wanted it to appear). The uploaded images are: Lubitel at Fulletby / / Normanton Church Museum Spring Clouds Towards Threekingham Storm Near Stow

Having had enjoyable results with my first roll I decided to put a second roll of Fuji Provia 100F through the Lubitel 166B. I finished the roll off the other weekend, while at Belton House, and last Monday I posted it for processing and scanning by my friendly Scottish landscape photographer (thanks Tim!). I got the results back on Saturday and have processed them all over the weekend. The results are as follows: Mareham Lane Rapeseed Lone Pylon Repetition Lubitel at Belton House / / / / I did suffer some light leakage this time around, especially on the first three frames. The second frame (Lone Pylon) suffered the most, hence the reason I turned it into black and white. Other than that I’m very pleased with the results. As it turns out, I was so happy with the way that Lone Pylon turned out I’ve made it available as a print (as part of my series Against the Sky):

I am about to go away on holiday to Cornwall and once back I intend to seriously look at doing some serious portrait work. I am not looking to run a studio (already have a part-time job running a charity as well as tons of other stuff) but am considering getting some decent lights to take to client’s, as well as perhaps a ring flash. Problem is I don’t have much money (certainly none spare) and so need to keep costs down. My needs are as follows: 1. DSLR with two lenses (preferably at least one prime rather than large zooms) / 2. Two flash heads plus brolleys/softboxes / 3. Light meter / 4. Tripod / 5. Backgrounds and stands Questions is, as regards DSLR, I have narrowed my system down to one of these: 1. Sony 350 twin lens kit, or / 2. Samsung GX_20 twin lens kit, or / 3. Fuji S5 Pro with decent lens Does anyone have experience of these kits and how do they find them for mainly portrait work? As for flash, is it better to get the type that is constantly on (Cool Lite type – not Tungsten) or flash type that charges and then discharges? Also, can anyone say what s the minimum width of background for typical family groups (no more than 6 individuals)? Any advice or shared experience gratefully received. Steve

While I have a Myspace blog, I chose to write in this one as well. I figured I could use it as sort of a photography/book journal. I love reading as much as I love taking photographs. I’ve always been a big fan of both, it’s not something that I decided to like once I got older or anything like that. / I’m not sure how many people will read this, but the ones that do will get a great insight into what I read, and like taking photos of, and other things along those lines. / I currently shoot with a Fuji s700 (S5700 anywhere but the US.) I like it a lot. I love the macro setting, and while I would have preferred a longer zoom, 10x isn’t too bad. I picked up a couple lenses and filters for it, so for the time being it pretty much does everything I need it to do. I know it isn’t a Dslr, but it serves its purpose for me just fine, and maybe one day I’ll move up in the ranks to a Dslr. Probably a Nikon. I saw the picturetown.com website and pretty much fell in love with the camera. I think the main reason I haven’t gotten a Dslr (aside from budget reasons) is I just prefer cameras that I can use straight out of the box as opposed to buying lenses and filters (which cost an arm and a leg btw) so I can get the feel of the photo I want. On to books: I’m currently reading a book by Kathleen O’Reilly called The Diva’s Guide To Selling Your Soul. It’s about a woman who has sold her soul to the devil (which is a female) in order to get everything she wants in life. Great body, rockin’ business, mind control, etc…but there’s a catch: She has to recruit people willing to sell their souls in order to move up in the ranks and get the new powers. Basically a soul selling MLM. After you recruit 2 souls, you move up to Level 2 powers and so on and so forth. So far, the book has been entertaining, especially with V (the main character) and Lucy (the devil) interacting with one another, because V keeps doing good things, donating to charity, saving kids from drowning, etc…and the devil doesn’t like it one bit! Lucy messes with V’s powers, dropping her levels (OMG I have fat thighs again!) and other things in order to get her to “correct her ways” and just act evil like she should. / I recommend the book highly to anyone that likes chick lit.

I’ll start out with what’s been going on, and gradually work into my newest product that I will do everything short of selling my body to afford. i.e. my drool-worthy product. I got my first photography job (jumping up and down, seriously!) I’m photographing one of the buildings here for a company that makes it into a 3-D model for someone who has never been there and would like to see it. Pays $20 an hour, which isn’t too bad for walking around a building taking photographs! Next, I’ll be showing a select few of my photos in a gallery here as well, with the hopes for some profit. Not expecting too much, but maybe someone will take a fancy to my photos, and I’d even be willing to autograph it! Aside from that, I’ve been reading up on some more cool effects for my photos, so be expecting some outlandish stuff added to my portfolio! Now, on to drool-factor: The new Fuji Finepix S8000fd. Oh. My. Goodness. For one, 18X zoom drool face-detection and automatic red-eye reduction drool Image stabilization drool and the low, low, price of $400. double drool If you’d like to read up on it: http://www.fujifilmusa.com/digitalcamera/overview.jsp?prodCatId=871639&item=I871639&dbid=871639&urltype=overview&NavBarId=I871639 Feel free to buy me one for Christmas…or a very early (or late depending on how you look at it) birthday present, that’d be just spiffy! / Though now the bad news, do I sell the camera I have now to get money to buy this one? Or do I keep both, figure out if I really will use both cameras and then sell it? Don’t know the answers yet, but I’ll soon figure it out. Hopefully, with any luck, I can make some money, save up, and maybe go halfsies with my mom or something. We’ll see. / Anyway, that’d be my ramblings for the day! Hope you enjoyed it!

Well I finally decided to pay a little more attention to my photography interest. Although I’m using a four year old Fuji Finepix S5500, I was pleasantly surprised by what I achieved on our last family outing to Blackpool Zoo, so along with two other friends (Ken and Darron) we’re plan to go on little trips round local landmarks and parks to practice. Along with these little trips I plan on having days out with BMHS (Blackpool Military History Society) of who two members are on RedBubble and have some stunning photos to their name. So there you have it, hopefully I’ll have some images to show you soon.

I couldn’t wait until morning to go and get my new 8.3 Mega Pixels digital camera! There was a sale, it was no bargain the camera got lots of features and so easy to use and adjust. I needed a lightweight camera that I carry wherever I go and take photos for the things I like.. It’s always a hassle to carry the big fat Nikon D2X around, right :) This little cookie is FujiFilm – FinePix A820, 8.3 MP, 4X Optical Zoom & loaded with 2GB SD Card and a Big 2.4in LCD Monitor. It has loads of features which I will talk about soon, it’s seems to be a long night while discovering all about this cool camera. So if you are a newbie or an amature photographer (Just Like Me), I highly recommend to get a hold on this camera!
