I’m not entirely sure how I did this. I know I took away the background from the tiny Small Copper butterfly, perched it on some leaves floating in the lake & fiddled with some layer stuff. It’s just for fun, not a serious attempt at layering, but it’s a beginning. The butterfly should have a reflection, one day it might, if I can figure it out. I don’t think I can do this again as it was all just playing and I can’t remember the sequence of events, but who knows where it will lead? / 011208 / PSE7 / 100% of ALL sales will benefit Butterfly Conservation Society (UK). / www.butterfly-conservation.org My Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain. Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Honey Bees (or honeybees) are a subset of bees, primarily distinguished by the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests out of wax. Honey bees are the only extant members of the tribe Apini, all in the genus Apis. Currently, there are only seven recognized species of honey bee with a total of 44 subspecies (Engel, 1999) though historically, anywhere from six to eleven species have been recognized. Honey bees represent only a small fraction of the approximately 20,000 known species of bees. Some other types of related bees produce and store honey, but only members of the genus Apis are true honey bees. In Australia, Honey bees play an essential role in agriculture, not only producing honey and beeswax but also pollinating a vast number of food crops. Beekeeping is a unique primary industry, depending on native flora for about 80% of its production. Nectar and pollen are produced seasonally and beekeepers must often move their hives large distances to be successful. Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia.

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Spotted Mountain Grasshopper (Southern pyrgomorph) Ben Lomond National Park, Tasmania, Australia. The Spotted Mountain Grasshopper generally refers to one of a number of types of alpine grasshopper – Monistria concinna, or Southern pyrgomorph. It occurs in eight different forms, each with its own distinct colour, which is likely to be an adaptation to its particular environment. The species itself occurs on the east coast from Northern New South Wales to Victoria and Tasmania. The ability of these grasshoppers to tolerate freezing conditions is attributed to an anti-freeze type substance called Sorbitol that has been found in the haemolymph (blood) of these individuals. The majority of insects do die when temperatures reach below freezing i.e. less than 0 degrees as they are deficient in this substance. I hope you like my few bee shots. I chased them around the mock orange for about an hour – it got a little more difficult as the afternoon progressed – they don’t seem to like the flash – strange…
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Hoverfly Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as hoverflies, flower flies, or Syrphid flies. As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers; the adults of many species feed mainly on nectar and pollen. About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described. Hoverflies are common throughout the world and can be found on every continent except Antarctica. Hoverflies are harmless despite their mimicry of the black and yellow stripes of wasps, which serves to ward off predators.
This image was captured in Jupiter, Florida Honey bees (or honeybees) are a subset of bees, primarily distinguished by the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests out of wax. Honey bees as a group appear to have their center of origin in South and Southeast Asia (including the Philippines), as all but one of the extant species are native to that region, notably the most plesiomorphic living species (Apis florea and A. andreniformis). The first Apis bees appear in the fossil record at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary, in European deposits dating about 35 million years ago. Two species of honey bee, A. mellifera and A. cerana, are often maintained, fed, and transported by beekeepers. Modern hives also enable beekeepers to transport bees, moving from field to field as the crop needs pollinating and allowing the beekeeper to charge for the pollination services they provide, revising the historical role of the self-employed beekeeper, and favoring large-scale commercial operations.
