Frozen lake

  • One of many frozen Willow trees lining the edge of Lake Wanaka, waiting for the dawn’s first light to warm them for a new day. At first I was disappointed not being able to see the lake and the mountains due to the heavy fog on the water. That soon changed!

  • A pastel sunrise on a bitterly cold February morning had frost clinging to the reeds along this Central Washington lake as a cold mist arose with the sun.

  • A morbid history of St. John’s… the hill in the background is known as Gibbets Hil, it is where all the criminals were hung in public executions. The body of water at the base of the hill is where the executioner would throw the bodies when they were dead. The pond is known as “Dead Man’s Pond”. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / /

  • Another shot I took of an ice covered lake in Belleville, Ontario.

  • Ice forming by the lake Tyrifjorden in the south-eastern part of Norway. Heavy snowshowers coming in from the southwest. Winter is settling in.

  • One must suffer for your art correct? Well this might fit, I headed out this cold December dawn a year ago with temps at -5 and windchill at -30. A bit chilly and I learned that if you take a glove and grab a metal tripod leg your hand will stick at least for a few moments. I hope the image was worth it! The frozen surface of Mud Lake just after dawn one cold winter morning. The long shadows of the tree stumps making eerie lines across the ice and skiff of snow on top.

  • A fellow photographer at a local beach working with the last light of the day. It’s always nice to meet other photographers unexpectedly when you’re at a location. Sharing thoughts and ideas and generally having a great time. Dedicated to all my fellow seekers of light.

  • After a stormy Sunday, the clouds break open and gives me the chance to greet the sun before it quickly disappears again. Loved the light I was given this particular evening. Canon EOS 5D / Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM / Cokin Z-Pro Z121S ND8 grad

  • Long exposure.

  • Five ducks in a row on ice,no trics.Taken at a small lake near my place.

  • At lake Neusiedl / Austria / Interested to see the original image? Here it is

  • Well, it’s not a final goodbye. When I shot this, a strong northern front was rolling over my head (the one you see in the photo) and discharging tiny specks of snow. But at least the ice is breaking and spring is in reach. Happy Easter (if you celebrate that kind of thing).

  • An icicle pushed up from the lake catches the final light of the day

  • Bow lake, Alberta. Canada / March 2008 One of the most stunning settings ever…

  • Bow Lake. Alberta, Canada / March 2008 Inspired by comments from Stuart Chapman and Rhana Griffin on my last upload of this stunning setting, I decided to revisit this location… if only I could have actually revisited for real, but sadly only through my many pictures… This really was an expanse of breath taking scenery and I was more than happy to pull this one out of the bag…

  • Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada / March 2008 Behold the frozen lake and exquisite beauty beyond… you can’t help but want to cross and satisfy the pioneer in you.

  • European Otter (lutra lutra) on a frozen pond – 30-Dec-08. Brrrrr…. cold tummy! Wishing you all a Happy Snappy New Year! ;o) Canon 50D with Canon EF 400mm L f/5.6

  • Today we had a beautiful cold day in Linz am See, Austria! My Website / → /

  • This small lake is in part of the garden that I look after at work and, luckily for me, is ideally placed to catch the rising winter sun. Taken 3rd Feb ‘09 / Nikon D40 – Sigma 10-20mm / 2 Exposures, processed in Bibble + Photoshop

  • Lake of Two Mountains, in the village of Oka Quebec, CANADA,taken on Saturday March 21st 2009 with Nikon D40, Nikkor VR 55-200mm lens. / The tracks you see carved into the ice in the foreground are made by the cars that pass daily on the “ice bridge” from one side of the shore to the other. This ice roadway is maintained by a private company, has been 100 years in existence and no accidents have ever happened. However, the day that we were there, we noted during the afternoon that several pools of water had emerged over top the ice in some places and we presume that was the last weekend of using the passage over the lake to get to the other side. • El Chalten, Argentina, South America TOP 10 in the Province from Around the World challenge in First Things. / FEATURED in Made By Nature. / WINNER of the Snowscapes and Glaciers challenge in Made By Nature.

  • My puppy having trouble running on a frozen lake

  • Glenmore Reservoir, Calgary, Alberta, Canada Colour tones unchanged.

  • The iconic Liathach rises above Loch Clair, on a beautiful Winter’s day. / Not a perfect reflection, but still a wonderful scene. The dead tree has stood there for as long as I remember, in just the right place for a great composition. / Liathach is one of the Torridon Hills, in the North West of Scotland. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, tripod, polariser, f19, 1/20sec, iso 100, auto wb, single RAW file pseudo HDR in Photomatix, tweaked in PS CS3, and a final layer of Orton, reducing the opacity, to make the colours ‘pop’.
