At the southern end of Five Mile Beach in the Northern Wilderness area of Wilsons Promontory is a seldom visited gem called Freshwater Lake. The Lake is formed at the bottom end of a huge swamp created from the runoff of the Roundback and Vereker Ranges. To get here I had just spent seven hours traversing around the rocky coastal fringe of the Cathedral. I was exhausted and so focused on cooking my dinner at the time that I almost missed this sight. Fortunately I did look behind me and was staggered at the colour of the sky which, minutes before, had been so grey and bland. Immediately I envisioned catching the sky in the still lake which was close by. Upon reaching the lake so taken aback was I from the reflection and the perfect touch of ducks sitting in the middle of it that I audibly sighed disturbing the ducks and ruining the reflection. Fortunately the water stilled again before the light was gone but alas no ducks. For more shots from this area check out my Wilsons Promontory gallery. These crocs are not considered overly dangerous, unlike the saltwater croc that will, if given half a chance, have you for dinner. You still need to be alert as they can give you quite a mauling. / As the freshwater croc lives on frogs, fish and shrimp you should not drag a finger through the water if in a small boat, as they are capable of performing a swift, painful amputation of the offending finger. Cheers

  • Today – Sunday 27th of July 2008 – I was teaching a one on one course with a couple and the day started nice and sunny. About 3.30pm this storm started to roll in. In 9 years of shooting landscapes I have never been able to be in a position to see a sight like this unveil before me and it was an amazing sight. There was sheet lightening in the cloud as well but it was to hard to capture. We left the beach just in time and boy did it bucket down in rain and hail. This storm made the 6pm news. This shot is 8 images shot at 24mm (Canon 1ds Mark II) and covers about 270 degree view of Freshwater Beach on the Northern Beaches. Crazy stuff. For me this is what landscape photography is all about. Also shot it on my Fuji G617 on Velvia slide. Best viewed large **

  • Reeds - Freshwater Lake
    by Travis Easton

    US$3.80–US$101.33

After just witnessing one of the most incredible sunsets and sunrises I have ever had the good fortune to experience, I could barely believe that there was yet more startling beauty to behold. Yet there it was, a perfectly shaped lone reed framed in gorgeously rich blue water enhanced by the warm post dawn light. My cup overfloweth. • BEST VIEWED LARGER Freshwater Beach will always remember that day in the Southern Summer of 1915 when the great aquatic Hawaiian, Duke Kahanamoku gave an amazing exhibition of wave riding with a solid surfboard modelled on the very type used by him in his native Hawaii. Over a period of time while he stayed at the Boomerang Camp at Freshwater, the Duke fashioned a solid board from the local timbers, and it was with this board that he first introduced to the Australian Surfing community the ancient craft of Hawaiian kings – the art of surfboard riding. Out through the surf-break “The Duke” paddled, turned around and having paddled onto the face of a breaking wave, caught the wave back into the beach while standing tall on this newly carved timber surfboard. This exhibition of skill and grace captivated the imagination of all those present, and if this were not enough, the Duke selected a young lady from the local crowd – one Miss Isabel Letham – to accompany him on his surfboard. While she lay forward on this surfboard, the Duke paddled out through the surf and then returned to the beach while riding tandem. / / ‘Surf’s up!’ was the cry heard one morning on Oahu’s south shore. Enthusiastic young men grabbed their surfboards and rushed to Waikiki to try to ride the big “Bluebirds,” giant waves that sweep in from Diamond Head and streak across in a solid line as far as Honolulu Harbor. The day closed with only one of those daring surfers defeating the tremendous waves. On his 16-foot, 114-pound surfboard, Duke Kahanamoku successfully challenged the dangerous Bluebird for a thrilling, one-and-three-quarter miles. Exhausted, he dragged his board onto the beach to the sound of cheers and applause from a crowd of admiring spectators on Waikiki Beach.”

  • This is a storm that came in out of know where. They predecited a late change in the weather but nothing like this. I wish I had a wider angle of view with my panoramic camera. It is hard to put into words how fantastic it was to see this kind of storm and to have all your camera gear with you at the time.
