The slick on the water (top left hand side) is the sea beginning to freeze. / Photo taken in the Lemaire Channel Antarctic Peninsular The Gentoo Penguin is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. Temperatures on the frozen continent are rising five times faster than the global average due to the unprecedented rate of climate change, pushing four species perilously close to extinction. Warmer temperatures are forcing penguins to raise their young on increasingly thinner and more precarious ice floes, while stronger winds mean many eggs and chicks are being blown away from their parents before they are able to survive on their own. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice destroys nesting sites and reduces vital food sources, such as krill.

  • Backyard Icicle (6) !
    by robkal

    US$3.42–US$91.20

All of these icicle pix were taken last week in my backyard here in CT. ,after an ice storm. / The icicles formed on 3 large azalia bushes. I took a LOT of pix and was amazed at the colors and shapes I was able to capture. I usually don’t like to post so many pix of the same subject, but I can’t help myself in this case- they are just ALL so different.! / I apologize if it’s getting a little too repetitious, but just when I promise myself I won’t post any more, I come across another nice capture. Thanks for your understanding !!!!

  • Snow Prince
    by Nikki Trexel

    US$3.99–US$106.40

Last winter we had some wonderfully frosty days which created masterpieces like this one.

  • There is something about frozen leaves that reminds me of winters when I was a child. They came fast, it happened overnight like no summer had been there. All things slowly came to a halt. There was only winter and winter alone … and it was cold. / / / / Laminated Print /

  • My dog River and I drove for hours deep into Mont-Laurier before dawn. In the deep freezing snow, we waited, waited, and then waited some more for the sun to come up. Finally the sky turned blue and the cardinals came to our “photo appointment” as “scheduled”. :) One cannot say we (as in River, my dog, and I) are not dedicated and passionate about meeting our cardinals. :) I thought after all that waiting in the frozen snow, it is only fitting that I donate the proceeds on behalf of the beautiful cardinals to preserve nature, so we can all meet up with them again in the future! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada

  • Drip...Drip...Drip... !
    by robkal

    US$3.42–US$91.20

  • When I gave the title to this photo, I could just imagine Ted’s disbelief: “Oh, silly Terri,” he’d write, “It can’t be deep freeze. It must be late fall or early spring even though ALL weather channels say it’s early March and the average temp that day was -35˚c. They must ALL be wrong, wrong, wrong…!” :) :) :) This was taken the same day with the photo of “camp pathfinder” in Algonquin Park – my favorite wilderness park to date. :)
