  • A walkway built over the I-17 freeway.

  • A view of Picacho Peak from the I-10 freeway.

  • Taken from the bridge looking down the main street of Albury.

  • This is another photo in my cloud series. It is a challenge to get a great shot when on the freeway, especially in Los Angeles when the norm is / that freeways are more like parking lots than roads. Thankfully, on Saturday afternoon we did not have to endure the stress of a typical day / on a Los Angeles Freeway. The painterly background of clouds is a beautiful canvas for the trees creating an ethereal effect. The contrasting colors of these clouds can be appreciated by viewing this image in the large format.

  • Driving home from work the silver clouds and the blue sky made for a great end to my day….. Click! /

  • View of the Eastern Freeway, looking toward the city of Melbourne, Australia.

  • Once Perth’s most important building the Swan Brewery, alas, is no more, having been converted into luxury units, riverside restaurant etc. a few years back. It sits astride Riverside Drive in the shadow of Kings Park and is a mere kilometre or so from the CDB. This photo was taken from Kings park and we are looking across the Swan River to South Perth and the freeway to the southern suburbs and, ultimately, out of the city and away down to the south west of the state. Also in shot is the Narrows Bridge which was recently duplicated in order to speed up the traffic flow. Beyond that is Perth Water. Camera Sony Alpha350 dslr / 18-70 lens with nd filter / Aperture preferred / Hand held

  • This is a photograph from the Bowman Exit of Interstate 80, looking east. I have ALWAYS loved this vista. But this shot doesn’t do it justice because the freeway’s view is 50% better and there’s no clear view from the frontage road. This is a location where the “cross hand shooting out the window” just won’t work: the camera needs to be situated on the passenger side of the van. But what you can see is 75 miles to the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the rolling foothills re-covered with green after massive fires. The dark areas move ever so slowly as the clouds pass and make this view change ever single minute. :-)

  • Emerging from the Eastlink tunnel near Ringwood, Vic.

  • A night photo of Perth City, And the Old Swan Brewery. EOS 500D.

  • If you thought this doesn’t really look like a gum tree, you’re right. It’s an ancient English elm, planted by the banks of the Yarra River here in Melbourne by the early settlers, who were homesick for greenery from the land of their birth. The elms are very much a part of Melbourne’s heritage. In fact, when extensive work was done on widening the Monash Freeway about 10 years ago, some of the elms were actually dug up and moved on heavy-duty cranes to temporary homes in nearby parkland. Then, when the freeway was ready, the elms were brought back to their original sites. This elm is actually in the area of parkland known as Birrarung Marr, on the north bank of the river. I shot this image exactly two years ago, on a cold, breezy winter day. I guess I was intrigued by the almost-horizontal orientation of these ancient branches and the way they formed a strong silhouette against a crisp blue sky. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot in 2007 with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F11, 1/350 sec, ISO 200, focal length 58mm. Featured in ALPHABET SOUP – LETTER E. July 2009. 36-9917

  • Looking down from the botanical gardens in Western Australia’s Kings Park to the South Perth side of the Narrows Bridge. Nowadays this is a double bridge that carries the north south freeway south to Mandurah, Bunbury and the south west and north to Joondalup. With new extensions to the freeway plus a new major highway, it is possible to drive for well over 200 kms on dual carriageway – a huge time saver over how it always used to be.
