  • Rainbow Lorikeet taken in my front yard Frankston South, Victoria, Australia. Rainbow Lorikeets live off nectar mostly and water they find in leaves. They will fly up to 50 kilometers, (31 miles), to find food and even develop a flight pattern that they follow everyday. During the winter seasons when the food is scarce they will eat fruits that are laid out for them by people. At the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary in Queensland, the visitors are asked to hold food out for the birds when they arrive in groups of hundreds at around 4pm. They will perch on people’s arms and heads to be fed. / Rainbow Lorikeets make very good pets because they can be tamed so easily and have a fun natured temperament. / http://www.australianfauna.com Sony DSC-H50: 78mm , 1/50s, f/4.5, ISO:200

  • Frankston Pier. Another seascape study in black and white. As I was taking photo of this pier in Frankston, Victoria, a local came by and told me story of this pier. It was built in 1857 so fishermen could ship their catches to Melbourne. It had known better days and seen ladies in long dresses and fancy hats as by mid 1880s Frankston was gradually becoming something like a holiday resort. Hard to imagine all these now, but I was told, the local council has started the refurbishment and timber top has already been removed. I personally like the pier like this, it makes a nice minimalistic seascape. • Taken this evening (23.11.2009) on a camera club outing to Frankston beach. I saw this young man standing on the edge of the pier admiring the sunet and loved the way he was standing there, he just “spoke” to me in some way. Just as I got ready to take a shot, he stepped down. I quickly made up my mind to ask him if he would mind getting back in that same pose for a quick pic – I wouldn’t normally ask anyone to do such a thing, but . . . He very kindly obliged me and this is the result. I love this shot even though it’s not brilliant. No changes other than minor straightening, a smudge of sharpening and then an enlargement. Thanks for looking, I hope you enjoy this shot as much as I do – all comments and criticisms are appreciated.
