Just downstream from where the Franklin River joins the Gordon RIver in Tasmania’s South-West World Heritage Area. Despite its remote, pristine appearance, this spot recieves thousands of visitors per year from nearby Strahan. These beautiful pear trees bloomed in our backyard every spring when we lived on the little farm near Monroe, Wisconsin. Rendered in pastels, they turned out to be a perfect subject! This painting was awarded a “State Exhibit Award” on February 16, 2008, in the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association Program, which means it is eligible for the state competition in Fall 2008. Of all my recent artwork, this is the one of which I am most proud!

The Franklin – Gordon Wild Rivers National Park lies in the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. It is a region of dramatic mountain peaks, beautiful rainforest, deep river valleys and spectacular gorges. The park is famous for the wild and pristine rivers that twist their way through the wilderness. The Franklin River itself has become synonymous with Australia’s largest conservation battle – the battle to save the Franklin from a proposed hydro-electric power scheme which would have flooded the river.

Another surrender! I guess the idea of OWNING an exotic animal is just too much to resist – until they begin to eat your house!! / I truly hope that another message comes through.. that these animals DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS.. that’s why places like Noah’s are in existence. If people would just think before they buy that cute LITTLE cub.. life would be easier on all of us especially the animals. After all.. they didn’t ask to be in the situation they are.. and there are far to many unscrupulous people out there that are in it for the money.. / At least with education, we might make a little difference.. even if we save just one animal.. it’s a beginning!! / All proceeds from any sales will be donated to Noah’s Lost Ark Sanctuary for the care and feeding of the animals. Hobart, Tasmania Named after Sir John Franklin whose Statue is also featured. Sir John Franklin (1786 – 1847) / From 1837 until 1843, the polar explorer Sir John Franklin was lieutenant-governor of Van Diemens Land. His presence in Hobart during the visits of major French and British scientific expeditions, led respectively by Dumont d’Urville and Ross, guaranteed both men a warm welcome and strong support for their endeavours. Franklin and his wife Jane contributed much to Hobart cultural and intellectual life. With the strong involvement of Jane, Sir John founded the Tasmanian Natural History Society, basis of the later Royal Society, which continues today to support and nurture science in Tasmania. Franklin’s polar connections were to continue. When the Franklins left Van Diemen’s Land, he led a naval expedition to the Canadian Arctic seeking the fabled ‘North-West Passage’ from Europe to the Pacific. He died in 1847 with all his men after his ships – the same Erebus and Terror that his friend Ross had brought to Hobart – became trapped in ice. His body was never found.

December was given the name Long Night Moon because winter secures it’s grip and the nights are at their longest and darkest.
