  • Panorama of the town of Assisi. Stitched together with hugin from 17 vertical images. Practically all important buildings can be seen in this panorama from the Basilica San Francesco on the left, over the Rocca Maggiore on top, to the cathedral San Rufino and the basilica di Santa Chiara on the far left. To the right of San Rufino one can see the tower belonging to the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo (Palace of the People’s Captain) rise from among the roofs. Since the year 2000 the whole town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites (officially it is titled as “Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi and other Franciscan Sites”). / If you are interested in the complete list of reasons why it was chosen look here ++ Location: Assisi, Umbria, Italy (photo taken from a side road between Assisi and Santa Maria degli Angeli)

  • The intricately decorated façade of the 13th century church of San Francesco al Prato, Perugia, Italy, is seen here framed by typically Italian pines. It was seriously damaged in the same 1997 earthquake that wrought havoc in nearby Assisi. It is, of course, named after St Francis, that town’s most famous son. Much painstaking restoration has been done since the earthquake and the results are for all to see. It lies within the city’s designated Centro Storico (Historic Centre). • I was working on two of the same model today (:iconfaestock:) and was not going to post this one – but my daughter said I should—so, up it goes. I did this one in honor of Santa Chiara (Saint Clare of Assisi)... / This picture reminds me of her once I finished it….. / (I’m a Third Order Franciscan – lay order of people who follow in the spirituality of Saints Francis and Clare). Anyway – hope you like it – it’s nothin’ fancy – but just something small from my heart to Saint Clare’s. ;-) To read more about her you can go to her wikipedia page at: / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clare_of_Assisi Pace e Bene! • Brescia: Church of San Francesco / This is one of the finest examples of convent churches in Italy. Its simple, unadorned style reflects the quietness and serenity typical of Franciscan life. The church, which was finished in 1265, is in late-Romanesque style. The nave is separated from two aisles by ogive arches supported by cylindrical pilasters. At the end of the 15th century the right aisle was completed with five elegant altars. Between these altars remains of medieval frescoes representing the “Last Judgement”, a “Pieta`” in the style of Giotto and votive frescoes should be admired. The church is embellished with many works of art, including an altar-piece above the high altar – a masterpiece by Romanino (1515), a fresco painted by Romanino during his youth (above the first altar on the right) and a work by Moretto (1530) (above the first altar on the right). In the centre of the convent there is a splendid late-14th century cloister. Camera used: / CANON EOS 450D

  • Birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi. This is actually two churches as there is one underneath as well. Assisi was one of our favorite stops with gorgeous vistas all around. This was not far from the recent earthquake in Italy.
