Critique of billisdead's "Saint-Malo"

Thank you to billisdead for allowing me to do my first critique on his wonderful photograph, Saint-Malo / / / This has always been a personal favourite of mine, being that I’m a sucker for shots produced with toy cameras :) / / The thing that strikes me most about this image is how dirty it is. It’s almost like I’m looking through a forgotten window to view the real world. In my opinion, this is the finishing touch on any photograph taken with a toy camera, what tweaks it to that certain degree of uniqueness. Another key to a great photograph is the feelings and emotions that can be pulled out of the audience. / / One glance isn’t enough to see everything that composes this shot, it’s one that you have to enlarge and really look at. There are so many neat little things hidden in the grimy shadows of the concrete and the exposed light of the sun. I really like how the only light is natural and contained mostly on the right hand side, drawing the eye in and down to the reflection on the plastic-looking water with its ever so slight rays off in the distance. The eye’s natural tendency to start at the left and read to the right is thrown off here with the horizon line. Having the sun as the starting point, the “beginning” of the horizon is noticed first on the right, being composed of what appears to be a strip of far-off buildings and trees. It gradually rises as the foreground overtakes the background and the buildings curve around to continue behind the photographer. Using this composition, I can’t help but be curious about what may be lurking in the shadows where the concrete meets the sand. / / This picture really evokes my love and appreciation of the unnoticed things taken for granted. Seeing the initial darkness and feeling the rough concrete of the confining society washes me in a wave of lonliness and hopelessness, so I search for a way to escape, digging through the shadows, smelling the smokey air, tasting the salt, being scratched by the sand until I reach the light. It’s like an escape to a dream world, only you know it’s more than real when you swear you can hear the waves through the sun-streaked vignetting. /

I feel so lucky...interview with Cyril...

What I would love to say to that very special person is that he’s a unique, different, sensible, loving, ingenuous, special, modest…the list goes on and on but I better let him talk to you.I have to say though that he was quite surprised when I ask him for an interview, not because he wasn’t happy about it but because he was unconfortable about writing in english…I think he accepted for me,I’m not saying that by infatuation but because he told me he wouldn’t be able to say no to me…. :))So here he is Cyril Marchand from France, the integral interview with an amazing photographe and poet….. / I can’t explain how I’m living with my camera…. World is all around us, and sometimes I need to catch a piece of it, a piece of life… / When I was young (not so far…), I used to go up to the attic, in my grandparents farm, close the door behind me, and spend long hours exploring the relics hidden in different boxes and chests. I do love old things… And every time I took picture, I make this moment robbed to the time, a moment starting to become a souvenir, an old thing… / Of course, more than my nostalgy, my architecture’s studies gave me pleasure on seeking shapes and colors, building spaces, filling emptyness ! “How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life?” I think artist people are more patient, open-minded… I mean, I think I’m this guy ! lol ! but the most important, I do love life and our world !!!! I try to live with it as friends , not enemy, never wasting time in sterile conflicts…. / In my differents professionnal activities, creativity generaly leads my choices and decisions… I never found numbers and counts attractive, lol ! “Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful?” Without any hesitation the moment when Gigi asked me to do this interview !!!! lol ! / Do you mind if I say all moments spent on RB have been great ? ... I found people loving sharing there passion, talking freely of their feelings and impressions, sometimes buying your works (this is as we say in french “La cerise sur le gâteau!”, the sherry on the cake’s top ) and more than all, from all over the world ! “Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you?” Maman ! Aide moi !!!Mommy help me!!! lol ! ... Make a choice in this wonderfull treasure is terrific !!! / well…. Liv Sockley / I love this pic… chaste, tender et generous. Several portraits on Liv portfolio are great. / Fundi / / / Jean M. Laffitau It’s like a caress to the eye… There’s so much softness being contrasted by the rigour of the stone … I just admire those who knows how to capture nudity, the faces … I’m afraid to altered the beauty of a person and muff a beautiful shot… lol ! And Jean has so much passion in his art,it transpires in everyone of his magnificient pictures. / Elegance / Jeremy McComb Here, I like the light coming from sky and not from the candelabrum …. / Lamp Setting / Norah / I was thursty the moment I went on RedBubble and found this photo… It’s fresh feeling every time I’m watching this pic ! lol ! / Tea,Morrocco Micmac / And of course, I do love one person, because she’s got a great heart, full of generosity, full of love. A person eating life like kids are licking lollipop… Of course her work, her photos are beautiful, but this is more thant only that ! she speaks, she writes as she takes pictures : with love again ! with humaneness and humbleness… / Thanks Gigi !!! / Just the two of us / / .... And be kind with my english…. Lol ! I’m just a wee froggy ! Bye ! / / Merçi Cyril,tu es un ange…..Bisou …Gigi

An Artist's dream in France?

My reasons for coming to France? Less stress, not working 9-5, better schooling for the children, better weather, having more time with the family, a bigger house, smaller mortgage, being closer to nature to name but a few. I came to France in January 2002 with my husband and two children aged 12 and 14, two rabbits and two budgies (the children refused to come unless they came too). There was no heating in our rented house and although we had been told how warm it was here, we endured temperatures of –25 that first winter. Better weather, um, I was reserving judgment on that one. We found a house, got a cheap mortgage until the Bank pulled out 2 days before we were due to move so we ended up borrowing from a different Bank and paying way more per month than anticipated. A smaller mortgage? This wasn’t looking good. Six weeks into our move, my husband is offered a job in Vienna, Austria and was leaving that week. He had been due to start a job here. 7 months later, my 13 year old daughter decided she couldn’t possibly live without her friends and went back to the UK. 4 years down the line having been separated from my husband for the most part, my marriage broke up. Better schooling for the children and family time were now also off the list. Oh well, onwards and upwards as they say and I still had son to consider who was doing brilliantly at school and well on his way to getting his Baccalaureat. Despite not speaking French, he was thrown into the French system. He didn’t have to redouble and seemed to integrate really well. Reason to be cheerful number 1. Better schooling for one child at least. Whilst living in our “dream” home, we had a chimney fire, two 20 year old trees blew down in a storm, we lost half our roof in another storm, my cat got run over and “la pièce de resistance”, I and the house were hit by lightning! I had just finished renovating it when the beautiful new inox tube that cost 700 euros and no one would ever see, got hit by a rare type of lightning, conducted through our kitchen, arced in my direction in the living room where I was standing in bare feet, threw me in the air and caused nerve damage to my feet. Being closer to nature? I didn’t want to be that close! Now that the house was totally annihilated, we had to sell it. Meanwhile, I had to put up with a French builder who just didn’t understand French! No matter how many times I asked him not to smoke in the house, he continued. Oh and the best thing of all he did, it was very creative, he ran out of sisal carpet so he cut little squares and did a patchwork effect on the landing! Less stress? (Sigh) Eventually the house was sold and I moved into my son’s apartment. It was only meant to be for a little while but when my marriage broke up, I was stuck there with 2 new kittens, 2 budgies and a moody teenager. So much for a bigger house. On top of that, I was also trying to get my career as an artist off the ground so found myself sitting at the kitchen table surrounded by canvasses and paint. Working 9-5? More like 5-9. At least I enjoy what I do. After 6 months I found a little house to rent with an attic room and views over the vineyards. Here I thought I could paint and reflect on what to do with my life. I hurled myself into my art and people actually seemed to like what I was doing. A year later, I took part in a small exhibition in Fayssac where I met my new partner. Joe is Hungarian, speaks English and lived just 10 minutes down the road! He’s also a musician and a website designer. When I’m not painting, we play music together. He plays the guitar and I the saxophone. Like most artists, we struggle to pay the rent but we live in a beautiful country, do what we feel passionate about and live in a better climate. I guess the moral here is, be careful what you wish for, it might just come true only it may not be exactly how you imagined it!

Well, I’ve completely uprooted myself and made a huge move from Australia to France, hoping to live here for a few years and be inspired by the countryside of Provence! Which is my excuse (and a viable one too, honest) for not having been around very much and for being unable to properly thank everyone who’s made such great comments on my art, though I have popped in as much as possible to see all your new work and get inspired. I’m still trying to find a place to stay, so my drawing time and internet time is still erratic but I’m going to try to catch up with everyone’s sites and art as much as I can when I’m not whizzing around exploring villages and hoping to find some place I can call home for the next few years. I think I may have found a village … I’ve certainly fallen in love with one in particular, but we shall see … :) Thanks for your patience at my absence and to those who have actually bought some of my work, YAY! See you over at your sites soon as I’ll be dashing around for inspiration whenever I can. Salut!

Paris & Hungary - April '08

Welcome to another adventure in the trails of the old Bogan warrior and his beautiful companion, or wife as she likes to be know. Once again we have visitors. My father-in-law Steve had to come to Paris for business and brought my mother in law along for the ride. I was more than happy to go. I loved Paris the first time I went, and this time just all the more endearing. Fabulous place, fabulous people, and the food were, well, fabulous. I tried snails this time, in a little restaurant over the other side of the hill in Sacre Coeur. They were to die for. I had half a dozen, I could have had twice as many without another thought, but I had an Argentinean steak that came out afterwards, cooked to perfection, soft as cotton. Delicious! Oh what pleasure! Paris is a place to go and immerse you self in culturally. I was more than happy to see it once again with the new camera in hand also. Last visit I only had the instant film camera. We came home, worked for a week, did a course for work for one week, and then we were off again. This time to Hungary. As we do when we visit a country, we spend a week, but get out of the main city. So we stayed in Budapest and then into the heartland, to Eger. Budepest has quite a past, mainly one of Russian domination and suppression. For these reasons I presumed: One, that not many people would speak English. Wrong! Two, a free spirit. Correct! Not a rude person among the people we met. Not a one. A bit eclectic maybe, but that is what I have come to expect of each European county I have visited. My mother in laws main complaint was the graffiti. I will agree there was a lot of it. But in a country where freedom of speech has been suppressed for so long, graffiti, I assumed, was a sign of freedom. Messages like a symbol of free speech. As long as the graffiti is there, the right to be your self and to say as you please exists alongside. I tell a taxi driver my thoughts on graffiti on the way to the airport, he tells me my thoughts are were interesting and most probably correct. The Danube flows right through Budapest separating the east (Buda), where we stayed, and from the west (Pest). The castle was just up the road from our apartment, and the palace further along from there. Buda is the hillier of the two sides therefore it has a wonderful lookout point just over from the palace. The west is more the business and luxurious side of town, with plenty of shopping, if you are into that sort of thing. To cut a long story short, so what is Budapest all about? What is every place we have been to all about? The people, food and drink, with some history for good measure. I have not seen so many couples sharing intimate moments in my life. They say Paris is the city of live, but Budapest must have overtaken by a country mile. I have not seen so much heavy petting since my days at high school. We were very warmly welcomed (meaning a European welcome, not a USA or Australian type welcome) everywhere we went. The food was great, even at the cheaper pubs that we visited. The beer was good and the wine was especially nice. It has a buzz of Paris with the steady staunchness similar to Prague. But the people are a lot more welcoming than in Prague. If you had a choice, and were to ask me out of the two towns where to visit, I would tell you Budapest with up most confidence. Our time in the country was short but very worth wile. Eger is a little town with a great reputation for wine. There is a wine tasting Valley called Valley of the Beautiful Woman, where you will find many wine growers, selling their wine. There can be purchase in large plastic containers, or bring your own, and they fill you up straight from the casks. We spent the only whole day we had there. We just popped back and fourth to all different cellars, slowly but sweetly, getting intoxicated. We had a great day with some beautiful wine, and a great homely atmosphere. Before we headed home, we stopped in Budapest to have lunch at Gerbeaud Ház. If you visit Budapest, this place is a must. Not cheap, but very nice beer, food and the best sweets in Budapest. I have been quite happy with my efforts with the camera of late, although there is always room for improvement. I am making an effort to capture people as well as places, and people in places. I enjoyed the challenge and was able to capture some really nice images of people. Although i have not posted any on RB, i enjoyed and was happy with the results all the same. Maybe i should!

So it’s a nice place for nature and landscape photography but sometimes i dream about Australia, American parks, Canadian forests … / And the photos i see on RedBubble makes me dream a little more :)

Provence waterfalls
by Patrick Morand:...
Last week, as told in a previous post, i spent some time hiking in some Provence canyons looking for water. Some years ago, all these small canyons always had a running stream. With years, dryness increases and they are dry most of the time. In november, we had some rainy days so i thought i could find some running water. / I went in a deep, narrow and dark canyon covered by autumn forest. / I had to walk a few hours to find a nice place with a stream running in the stones and a rocky waterfall. Because of the darkness, it was not difficult to obtain the silky water effect. All the shots were between 15 and 30s exposure. / I couldn’t resist to put the tripod legs (and mines) in the stream for some photos but i didn’t kept the resulting photos because moving water made vibrating tripod. When i left the place, the canyon was in the night.

.... Front page for Arcachon..... / ... / God ! At the beginning, I thought it could be great to find people liking my work as far I’m not a great photographer and my camera neither…. And now, I realize I can give you the same feeling I’ve got when I’m watching your art !!! Thanks you all for your comments ! Thank you all for your work ! / You’re keeping my dreams floating on life ! (It’s really difficult to try poetry….. lol ! ;-) Arcachon is a really nice and romantic place. Between Ocean and forest, old houses are reflecting sky colors, looking at fishermen working in the “Bassin”. / The highest dune in Europe is just near Arcachon, and there are so many cellars to visit and for tasting differents wines…. I’ve been there for a year during my military period, and even if beaches are full of people during summer holidays, it’s always easy to get a quiet place on these huge beaches and dunes. Also forest can be a good shelter against touristic attack ! lol ! Nevertheless, during winter, Arcachon still being a place where living sounds as happiness…. If my english would not have been so poor, I suppose I could talk hours and hours on this place… lol ! Have a nice day !

SOLIDOR TOWER A BIT OF HISTORY
by caroline caux-evansBy caroline caux / 9 December 2007 originaly put in JPG Magazine / Some of you might have seen the photos I have put about ,Solidor Tower, ...
By caroline caux / 9 December 2007 originaly put in JPG Magazine / Some of you might have seen the photos I have put about ,Solidor Tower, so here is a little bit of history! That tower is situated in Aleth which is now part of St Malo. This is a rock , above sea level and it, was at the 1st centuary before Christ, a capital!would you believe that??? The port did occupy what we call an “anse” Solidor, which was isolated from the sea. At the time, the commerce between Great Britain and the Channel Islands, and this port was flourishing. But, the Romans, moved this “capital” , more in the interior of the lands and called the new capital: Corseul Aleth, stayed behind, standing fierce in front of the sea, alone! Since ,that time, has been discovered , in the port, a “pomping station”of soft water, which had the mission , of bringing soft water , to the ships going to sea! Then, in the 3rd centuary, Aleth, started to come out of the fog again, because, it became a refuge! In fact, when the Pirates attacked a lot, and , people use to come there for shelter! High walls, “the remparts” were built! They buit the casttle so that the military could stay there! It became a very important religious centre before the arrival of the Bretons! and their future invaders from the North, the Normands.(yes the area was quite visited at the time!) But, the waters, came up , and of course, the flood, changed quite a bit the physionomy of the area.(an ever changing world!) The Solidor Tower, measures around,27metres, and was constructed in the XIVe centuary. its name means in breton: the river ’s door! Now it is transformed into a museum, for “the Cap-Horniers” The malouins have been the first to go to the Cap Horn(Gouin de Beauchenes, in 1686) In fact he decided to go to Chili and Perou!an amazing guy! for sure!He didnt fear anything!!! It is well known that the Bretons are great travellers! The Cap-Hornier even went to California,on the way to the Gold Fever, and Sydney was an other adventure for them! In 1880, things changed ,because other kinds of ships came on the “market”: (steam ships) and “progress” slowly made them die away! Let’s not forget the war of 1914! Now, there is a “Port de Plaisance”, and people from Jersey, Guernesey, Sark and Great Britain, make the most of the “customers”! In St Malo, we have as well every ’ years, la Course du Rhum”, which we had last summer and takes people to La Martinique ! St Malo is well known as well for its Festival des Etonnants Voyageurs, which arbhours writters and Artists from all over the World! It takes place in June!with Cafes Litteraires and Exhibitions! We do hold the BD, or Comics, Festival: Quai des Bulles! For Your Eyes Only:This story has 117 Views. /
