This is based on my experience working at markets and in “painting and sculpture” galleries. I have heard of exclusively photographic galleries (collaborative- not just for a single photographer) which are an easier market but I am yet to find one in Melbourne. DISCLAIMER: The opinions presented in this journal are not a substitute for professional advice and are based on analogical evidence Things that I have found help to sell photography are: / 1) Taking a strikingly lucky, creative and one off image that others would struggle to replicate / 2) Presenting your photos in an original way / 3) Providing support material to the seller about the image and yourself / 4) Signing the image and providing info on the back / 5) Having a variety of photos available for sale / 6) Only having one copy of each image on display Things I have found detract from selling photography / 1) Inferior or unsuitable framing or packaging / 2) You are selling a whole bunch of your images and most of them look similar- or more so, look like you took them all on the same day / 3) No information about the image is available / 4) No image about the photographer is available / 5) I hate to say it but photographers with birthdates in the 1980s should consider omitting this information from their biography because youth = inexperience in the minds of some buyers. The exception seems to be works using a lot of photomanipulation. / 6) Damaged prints or packaging / 7) And it might have seemed the most obvious point but images that are not interesting, or that do not fufil a decorative need There are many ways of presentaion your images including: / 1) Loose prints or posters / 2) Matted prints (and whether to sign the image or the mat) / 3) Canvas Prints / 4) Framed Prints / 5) Putting your images on other products (tastefully) Generally speaking, bad presentation will doom the sale of even the most amazing photograph and that the more creative and unusual your presentation, the more attention you and your work will recieve. Who has some other tips?

Quite a few people have asked me recently how to post framed images of their work under the buy button or in the description area, as I have done here I think it adds another dimension to your page and hopefully encourages people to go one step further than the buying a card option. Thought it might be a good idea to do a general post about this. Will also add this to the various group forums I’m in. Apologies if this has already been done elsewhere. Anyway, here’s how to do it! 1. click the “buy” button on your already uploaded image / 2. click “framed print” option / 3. right click and copy image address / 4. then go back to your ‘my bubble’ and click on your “art” tab and go to the pic you want to edit / 5. Paste image address in the description box / 6. add exclamation marks at the start and end of image address (don’t leave any spaces) / 6. Press save ...and voila! You have it! Bt the way this only works with pics in portrait mode not landscape (you can still insert landscape pics but the right hand side gets chopped off) Cheers & Good Luck / Loredana :-)

I’ve had quite a few people ask me how I put the framed pictures into my overview/profile. So rather than, first of all remembering what I did, and secondly writing it out each time, I thought I may as well put my (hopefully) simple version of it here. There are also tips in the forums if this doesn’t help you. Ok. / Go to the photo you want to show framed ~ click on the ‘buy/preview’ button / ~ figure out what you want to show, i.e. a mounted print with a black frame. / ~ once you have that preview on your screen, ‘right click’ on the picture / ~ go to where it says ‘properties’ at the bottom and click on it / ~ now go to the ‘URL address’ and highlight it, now copy it (the whole address) ~ Now go to ‘my bubble’ / ~ then ‘edit your profile’ / ~ go down to where it says ‘about you’ (now the tricky bit) ~ type in an exclamation mark ! / ~ now paste in the ‘URL address’ that you copied earlier, straight after the / exclamation mark / ~ now type in another exclamation mark ! , straight after the ‘URL address’ Once you’ve done all that don’t forget to go to the bottom of the screen and press ‘Save Changes’

Hello, We’re looking to introduce a matted print to RedBubble in a couple of weeks time. The print area would be one size to start (max 10 by 15 inches) with an overall matte dimension of 17 by 23 inches. We’re aiming for the base price to be $25-$30. The matted print would be backed with thick card stock and would have a hanging device on the back of them (like mounted prints) so they can be directly hung on the wall. We’re also looking to introduce a ‘interchangeable frame’ that could be used to house the matted print – the theory is that it would be easy to swap a matted print in and out. The base price for the interchangeable frame is yet to be finalized but it’s likely to be $60-$80. The matt board and backing board will be acid free. The frame will be made of solid timber sustainably harvested in Australia (no rainforest timber). Mountain Ash for those who know their Australian timbers. So a few quick questions: 1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in? / 2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in? / 3. Do you want the want glass/perspex in the interchangeable frame (or nothing in front of the print)? / 4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print? / 5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints? / 6. What other questions do we need to answer? Here are few images of the prototypes: - Peter

I have been asked a few times how to make and place frames around your pictures. Like all things, it only seems difficult until you learn how to do it. Here is how you can frame your pictures. After you have uploaded a picture, you will note that there is a buy/preview button. Press on this button. The Buy window will open with Card selected as default. You need to decide which border you want to use. For instance, if you want Laminated Print then press this icon and you will see your picture in a small white frame. I usually change this to a Medium frame with a Black border. You can decide what is right for you. Next thing to do is to right-click over your picture and select Properties from the popup window. The Properties window will appear. You will note that the Address of your picture is shown next to Address (URL). Using your mouse, highlight the address. It starts with http://images… and ends with .jpg or .png (depends on what you uploaded). Make sure you have highlighted all of it, just scroll until you reach the .jpg (or .png). Copy the URL. You can right-click and choose Copy. You will have a copy in your mouse buffer. Close the Properties window. Use Cancel or OK, it does not matter which. Use the back-arrow on the page (top left) to get back to your Edit page. In the Description area, you need to Paste the URL where you want the picture to appear. I usually do it after my picture description. You need to put an exclamation mark (!) before and after the URL. Make sure that you DO NOT place any blank spaces between the exclamation mark and the URL. After that, you just need to click on the Save Changes button at the bottom of the Edit page. If you prefer, you can paste the URL into the Add your comment box in the Public view area for your picture or in the About you area of your Edit Your Profile area (remember the exclamation marks). Click on the show public view of this work link (near top right) to see if it worked OK. Let me know if you have any problems. Cheers, / Tom You can find all my How To Tutorials by clicking here.

  • TUTORIAL: Downsizing those "example images" on your profile page

I recommend printing these instructions so that you have them handy for reference. It is easier than switching back and forth to this screen. Sometimes the examples of framed photos can take up quite a bit of room on our profile pages. Here’s how you can make them smaller to take up less room. SHORT VERSION: Save the framed image to your computer and re-size it in a photo editing program. Then upload the smaller version back to RB using the “hide” feature. Once uploaded then you can right-click on the image to get the URL address in order to post the smaller version on your profile page. That was a quick-and-easy version for the more computer saavy. STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS: Below are more detailed instructions that explain how to add smaller examples (card, laminated, matted, etc.) to your profile. You can view my profile to see an example of the size I used. Click on “my bubble”. Click on “art” (on the 2nd row of links – not the top one). You should see “My Art” page – this is the page where you can edit your pics. Choose your photo and click on “Show Public View”. Click “Buy/Preview”. (Note: You won’t actually be buying, only previewing) Choose the frame of your choice, mat, color, etc. When the image of your framed photo appears on the screen, right click on the photo. A pop-up box will appear. Click on “Save Photo As”. Be sure to save as a jpeg (.jpg) file. A dialog box will appear. Choose a folder or location on your computer to save the framed pic. Remember where you save it. You are done with RedBubble for now. You can close your browser window or leave it open for later. Resize the Photo: You now will need to open the saved, framed image on your computer using a program such as Photoshop or Irfanview. You can use any software that will allow you to resize the image. For this example, I will use Irfanview. You can download this free software by going to www.irfanview.com If you are using another program, you will need to use the resize/resample feature. Open Irfanview. Open the framed image that you saved to your computer. Go to “Image” (top menu bar) – in the drop-down menu, choose “Resize/Resample” In the dialog box, you will need to change to a new size. For my own profile page, I chose approximately 175×141 pixels so that I could fit two images side-by-side. See my “profile page”: http://www.redbubble.com/people/patmonty/ for an example. These numbers are not set in stone. You may need to tweak the numbers to suit your own needs. Save your resized image in Irfanview, but be sure to remember where you have saved it. Close Irfanview and open RedBubble in your browser window. Add Smaller Image to Redbubble: Now you are going to upload the resized pic to RedBubble. IMPORTANT: Be sure to “Hide this work from others” When you upload, the resized image will be private and only can be viewed by you. Once uploaded, then right click on the private, resized image. A pop-up box will appear. Right click on the photo. In the pop-up box, click on “properties” (at the bottom of the list). The “Properties” box will pop up – highlight the address (URL) . {Click & drag will highlight the entire address} IMPORTANT: Be sure to highlight the entire address – only two lines will be visible, but if a third line of the address hidden, be sure you drag down to highlight all lines of the address. Next copy the URL address. Press Ctrl-C (press the control key and the “C” key at the same time). You won’t see anything happen on the screen, but that is fine. Click OK to close the “Properties” box. Go to “edit your profile”. Press Ctrl-V (press control key and the “V” key at the same time). You should see the URL address. Put an exclamation point ( ! ) in front of the URL address and another one at the end of the URL address. It should be similar to this example, but without the spaces: ! http://images-0.redbubble.com/img/art/cropped/size:xsmall/view:main/993259-1-yellowstone-in-winter.jpg ! Remember, NO SPACES before or after the exclamation point (!) – the beginning of the URL should look like this: !http:// The end of the URL address should look like this: winter.jpg! Now check the public view of your profile to see if the smaller-sized image appears. Now you can add the html code for your next image. Keep the html code for each image separated by one space. If you have problems or questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Have a blessed day, / Patricia CLICK HERE FOR ALL TUTORIALS BY PATRICIA

  • TUTORIAL: Tee Shirt Helpful Hints

I am certainly no expert at making tee shirts. I know there are others out there who are the real experts. So I’m just going to share a few helpful hints that came out of my struggles to get two tee designs uploaded on RB. Here’s what I did: Opened Photoshop Elements (or any other image editing program) and set up a new empty page. Set the dimensions to 2400 width x 3200 height with a transparent background. IMPORTANT NOTE: If the background is not transparent, it will not work! If you are one pixel off on the dimensions, it will not work! You cannot transpose the pixels either (NOT 3200 width x 2400 height) as it will not work! Transferred (copied) an image to the blank/transparent background. Added text to complete my design. Saved image as a .png file. NOTE: Other file extensions (such as .jpg) will not work! It must be a .png file! Uploaded to Redbubble with a default color and a default style. This will be the color and style (short-sleeve, long sleeve, etc.) you want to display on the page to showcase your design. NOTE: If you forget to choose the defaults, it will not work! Should I have a contest to see who can guess all the things I did wrong when I first tried to upload a tee shirt design? LOL! Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have problems or further questions. I have written this tutorial more for the new bubblers that have recently joined. But if you have been around the site for awhile and still haven’t yet attempted to put a link in your profile, image description, or bubblemail, this should help. FOR THE COMPUTER SAAVY: Put quotation marks around the words you want to be the link. Then type a colon. Copy and paste the url address for the page, image, etc. that you want to link to. No spaces anywhere in the code. BEGINNER STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS: I would suggest printing these out to have next to the keyboard. It will be easier than switching back and forth to this screen. -Type the words you want to be the link: Bubblesite for Patricia -Put quotation marks around the words: “Bubblesite for Patricia” -Add a colon at the end: “Bubblesite for Patricia” : -Then add the url address for the page/photo you want to link to: http://patmonty.redbubble.com/ -It should look like this (without the space): “Bubblesite for Patricia”: http://patmonty.redbubble.com/ -I put a space after the colon so the html code would be visible in this journal. Take out the space and waa-laa! It becomes a link! Bubblesite for Patricia NOTE: In a bubblemail, it becomes a link after it is sent. In a comment, it becomes a link after the comment is added. In a journal or profile description, the clickable link is only seen in the public view. If you have problems or questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know. • Marketing and Sales

It’s not sales and marketing, it’s marketing and sales. How can you sell something before you’ve marketed it? / Anyhow, for those who thought this was going to be an expose on how to market and sell your redbubble art, you might be slightly dismayed. I say slightly because the message is surprisingly simple. This is marketing . I plurked about my recent befriending of a fellow train-catcher that resulted in a discussion that enabled me to promote my photo-hobby. This is sales: I sold a framed image from my RB gallery today. This is Naked Porcupine , medium, black frame, bright white matte. / For the tech-nerds at Redbubble headquarters who are saying ‘Hang on, hang on, our records show that YOU bought this from your own gallery!’: Yes, you are right, I purchased it myself. Let me explain why: I told a handful of friends earlier today that I’d be ordering a heap of cards and shirts this weekend, and that if they wanted anything in particular to tell me the names (and style) ASAP so I could include them. Within 10 minutes, a request for the aforementioned frame was asked of me, plus a request on how it could be paid for quickly and easily without using online facilities. / I agreed to pay for it myself and deliver to its new home … whereupon payment will be made. In closing, this is for those readers who’ve been hanging out for my usual marketing tips that bring in the sales, here they are: 1. Promote your work wherever you are: / ... Including public transport, family events, football stadiums, your local pub’, and online social networking (and in this circumstance, plurk.com) . / 2. When introducing yourself to new friends, tell them you are a photographer/artist/etc. / ... Don’t be embarrassed to tell people what you enjoy. Even if it’s only a hobby now, a little bit of exposure might be all the push you need to make your time and energy into a career. / 3. When asked to see your artwork, have it available. / ... Finally having an Apple Touch is worthwhile for something more than getting email and free wifi ! / 4. Be prepared to buy your own work if that’s what it takes to sell your artwork. / ... I have two boxes of my own cards, plus an online list available for people to choose which photographs they’d like to buy as card from me . / ... I also keep a handful of cards (protected by individual plastic bags to include the white envelope within the card) in my day-bag for letting people see and feel them. Everyone wants to know about the quality of the paper, the gloss of the image and to see them in-detail. Hope this helps you, because it all works very well for me!

  • A Reason to Shout! 15% Off Framed and Canvas Prints. 7 Days Only.
    by selling

Shout This promotion is a great opportunity …

Shout This promotion is a great opportunity to market your art. It’s also a good opportunity to do a bit of ordering for the holidays – which will be here before we know it. Make It Better 15% off framed and canvas prints is a pretty good savings, but you have the power to make it an even better discount for shoppers. Here’s an example of the discount you can boast when you lower your margins temporarily for this promotion. For example, by lowering a mark-up from 30% to 15%, you can market your prints for 25% off. Come and Get It Here are a few ways to get the word out about this promotion: 1. Announce the sale in a journal article and suggest a few best-selling (or new) designs to shoppers. 2. Use your blog, social networking hangout, or other webpage to promote your sale. You can use the graphics that we provide below, or create your own. If you create a graphic (or template) and want to share it with other RedBubble members, simply link to it in the comments area below. 3. Create a unique sales event about: New Work – “See my newest artwork and get 25% off. Framed and canvas prints start at under $x!” Seasonal Sale – “Eliminate the last minute gifting worries at holiday time. Get unique framed and canvas prints on sale now.” If you have any holiday-themed artwork, you might want to link to a few from your profile page. Series Sale – Use your Profile page to suggest artworks that can be paired, e.g., “Buy this pair of Paris prints for under $x.” Limited Editions – Offer an artwork for the week of this sale only. Then put it in storage for 6 months. Limited Editions and sales promotions work well together. Newsletter Special – Send news of the sale to a hand-picked group of contacts. If you have a large contact list or are concerned about spam filters, services such as Campaign Monitor allow you to send emails for 1 cent per email. Plus, services like this one offer free email templates that do not require a knowledge of programming languages such as HTML. If you send an email, remember to: only use a list of people that agreed to receive your emails; note the promotion deadline; check your links. More email tips are here. Raffle – This idea is a bit more work, but you can post a contest/raffle on your Profile page. E.g., “Buy now and be entered to win an original artwork. Send me a quick note at the end of checkout (there’s a field for this on the final page of checkout) and I’ll enter you in quick and fun drawing to win my artwork named “x.” FYI, in the U.S., you need to allow a “no purchase necessary” option, e.g., allow people to email their entry without purchase. You can put this in small type using the ^ character on either side of your text. Dig It The price you and shoppers see has already been discounted by 15% on RedBubble pages and in the cart. Happy selling! The RedBubble Team p.s. If you have an interest in learning more sales techniques, check out the Sales Group and our free Selling tips and tricks. All Things Must Pass Offer ends: / Thursday, August 27th, 10:00 a.m. EST (Melbourne, Australia) / Thursday, August 27th, 1:00 a.m. BST (UK England – London) / Wednesday, August 26th, 5:00 p.m. US Pacific (California, USA) / Time converter tool From Me to You Promotional Images for RedBubble, blogs, MySpace, etc. Below are a couple of graphics that you can use on your RedBubble Profile page, blog, MySpace page, etc. If you’re a Photoshop wizard, you can place your work in the frames and on the canvas images in these graphics. We’ve had the hanging system lying on the floor of the studio for well over a year now, and never got round to actually putting it up, so I thought I’d share a couple of pics with you guys!! I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it before, but I have lots of original paintings for sale, if anyone is ever interested in the original work, give me a yell and we can talk turkey :) I have lots and lots that are unframed too and you can’t see ‘em here .. so let me know if you see something you like in my portfolio and would like the original

Provides an ideal combination of minimal weight and high load capacity. / / / / Canvas Prints / / RB using Canson Canvas, an Epson printer and Epson pigment inks to ensure a quality product that will look great and last forever. All canvas prints have a water-based clear lacquer applied to them as a UV barrier and to protect the canvas prints from scuffing. It also makes them easier to clean! All canvas prints are mounted on hardwood (Eucalyptus Regnans to be exact) for a sturdy frame. / / / / Framed Prints / / Finely-crafted custom frames create stunning art pieces from RB prints. Frames are crafted from quality timbers in a range of finishes. A white, off-white or black matte surrounds the print to emphasize the artist’s work and bring the piece to life. Premium ultra-clear perspex in front provides a superior finish and means the piece is lighter and easier for you to move without breaking. / / / / Posters / / RB posters are available in three sizes, with a maximum print area of A2, A1 or A0. / Posters are printed with a 5mm white border. / They’re printed on durable 180GSM matte stock. These posters are water-proof, which we discovered when James “washed” one in the sink. Although the print survived surprisingly well, we recommend ordering new posters in preference to scrubbing them under a faucet. / / / / / / Calendars / / Calendars are printed on high quality, high density paper that’s easy to write on, and come bound and ready for hanging on your wall. RB calendars are printed on an HP Indigo 5000 (for those who haven’t heard, this is the digital press). Each page is a matte coated print on 170gsm pages. The cover shows your choice of image on heavier 300gsm paper. Your calendars have a hanger and white wire binding. / RedBubble calendars are satin-coated prints on high quality art paper. They’re A3 size (that’s 297×420mm, or 11.69×16.54”) / / / / / / T-Shirts / / T-Shirt designs are printed on 100% cotton American Apparel fabric, and are available in cuts to suit men, women and children. To keep them looking great, wash them cold and hang them up to dry. The come in 4 different styles and 22 different colours, short and long sleeve, girly fit and unisex. Over the time I have been on Redbubble now, I have come across several good hints and tips to make layout on Redbubble. Some of it I remembered, some journals or forum posts I linked or saved as favourites, others I forgot or lost again. Today, I discovered another layout tip, just by accident LOL Maybe it is described somewhere else, but I didn’t read it, I just saw it happen while working on a layout… In order not to forget this, and maybe share it with others, I decided to start this journal, and collect more layout tips and hints here. note : the highlighted frame code described here seemingly only works in forums, not in a journal – and only at the very top of the post, not in the middle / And the heading-code gives a different effect in the journal and in the forums. / Please compare the screenshot (forum) with the journal text underneath :) / Highlighted frame in forums >So, in order to make a highlighted frame around your text, like the one you see on top of the forum-post in the screenshot ... you start your sentence with a > sign, then no space but text immediately / Making a heading And another one I discovered myself, some time ago, is / How to make a heading like this 1. write text of the heading / 2. hit enter / 3. type = ( OR 5x ===== / works the same ) / 4. hit enter x2 / Other interesting and helpful links: webgrrl’s RedBubble Format CheatSheet webgrrl’s format n found by accident.. Dave Pearson’s Hack: Better text formatting hints TUTORIAL:Add a Slide show to your Redbubble Profile/Bubblesite aglaia b ’s way to do the square crop of calendar images so as to be more HP friendly. / Testing Area / test with 1 = test with 2 = test with 3 = = / test with 5 = [[[tekst test / _

This week we’re continuing our series of products reviews, for those who are new to RedBubble and as a refresher for bubblers who’ve been with us for a little longer. A great deal of effort goes into chosing products, examining alternative formats and testing the print quality so we can do justice to the great artwork on RedBubble. Today we’re putting framed and matted prints under the microscope. The reusable frames and matted prints can be purchased seperately or you can buy them together as a framed print. / Buyer’s Booth images by Melinda Kerr (thanks to Travis Easton), Anne Staub and Sandra Chung Matted Prints We place a high quality photographic print between two layers of matte board cut to a standard 20” x 16” (508mm x 406mm) size. Your artwork can be placed inside one of our picture frames or hung on the wall as is. The matte board is available in white, off-white or black. / Buyer’s Booth images by lisabella (thanks to warriorprincess), bubbleblue and onetonshadow Framed Prints Our frames are made from quality solid timber and are available in a range of finishes. We use premium ultra-clear perspex which gives a superior finish but means the piece is lighter and easier to move without breaking. It’s also safer and less expensive to post. You can purchase the solid timber frames separately so if you feel like a change, it’s easy to update the colour or style of your frame. They’re available in the following colours: Reusable frames are available for purchase separately in the RedBubble Store. / Buyer’s Booth images by Paul Vanzella (thanks to Jason Michaels), TammyP and DesImages Words from framed and matted print fans: Upon opening the package, I was pleasantly surprised to see the items surpassed my expectations quality wise. The matted prints are far sturdier than I expected. Very happy indeed. I also purchased a re-usable frame. The concept of a quality re-usable frame, when combined with a few matted prints, is a winner in my eyes. Rotating the images from time-to-time on a wall keeps the place looking fresh. – Darren Stones I bought this matted print Monarch in Green from OrphieG. The print is gorgeous and the quality is exceptional. Thank you OrphieG and RedBubble. -MJWilk29 The framed and matted print is more beautiful than I expected. Very high quality and workmanship! – digitaldavers These matted prints arrived today, and I am rapt with the quality. The matte really makes my photos look great, and my workmates were impressed when I showed them. The packaging was really excellent, with individual plastic bags, bubble wrap and a solid cardboard box. The prints are for a local art sale, and I was really pleased to see that there is a little cord on the back to hang them with. Definitely would buy these again! – DesImages For all you eager deal-hunters, don’t forget that all you need in your shopping cart is two or more Framed Prints to score FREE shipping on your order. A pretty fantastic deal considering the packaging alone is simply priceless! More detailed information: Framed and Matted Print review by Darren Stones Mr Baxter’s guide to the Framed Print (video)
