This is based on my experience working at markets and in “painting and sculpture” galleries. I have heard of exclusively photographic galleries (collaborative- not just for a single photographer) which are an easier market but I am yet to find one in Melbourne. DISCLAIMER: The opinions presented in this journal are not a substitute for professional advice and are based on analogical evidence Things that I have found help to sell photography are: / 1) Taking a strikingly lucky, creative and one off image that others would struggle to replicate / 2) Presenting your photos in an original way / 3) Providing support material to the seller about the image and yourself / 4) Signing the image and providing info on the back / 5) Having a variety of photos available for sale / 6) Only having one copy of each image on display Things I have found detract from selling photography / 1) Inferior or unsuitable framing or packaging / 2) You are selling a whole bunch of your images and most of them look similar- or more so, look like you took them all on the same day / 3) No information about the image is available / 4) No image about the photographer is available / 5) I hate to say it but photographers with birthdates in the 1980s should consider omitting this information from their biography because youth = inexperience in the minds of some buyers. The exception seems to be works using a lot of photomanipulation. / 6) Damaged prints or packaging / 7) And it might have seemed the most obvious point but images that are not interesting, or that do not fufil a decorative need There are many ways of presentaion your images including: / 1) Loose prints or posters / 2) Matted prints (and whether to sign the image or the mat) / 3) Canvas Prints / 4) Framed Prints / 5) Putting your images on other products (tastefully) Generally speaking, bad presentation will doom the sale of even the most amazing photograph and that the more creative and unusual your presentation, the more attention you and your work will recieve. Who has some other tips?

  • Making choices in self portraiture

This is my homework for the course I am currently doing at Brunswick Street Gallery. We have to take a self portrait which does not show our face but which does show something of ourselves. This may not be the one I submit, but it has been an interesting exercize and I thought I would share. I often post work here without much of an explanation into the choices I make. I thought it might be nice to make it available so you can see that I do actually put a bit of thought into my work, even if it is not obvious at first glance. The Easels: / Faded and old. They represent myself as an artist. How of late I am taking fewer and fewer photos and am out of practice. They are scattered at random, which is a lot like my very hectic and chaotic life. Yet they all match, which shows my underlying need to have organisation, even if it is organised chaos. You may notice the empty frame. For me this represents not only my occupation, but it’s emptiness means it acts as a window. A way to see into me. It is a comment on the whole image as well as an element within it. The Doll: / This is a childhood doll and has my old name written on it (from before I became Jo O’Brien). So it connects to my past and reminds me of a time passed. She is naked, which reflects how I feel as an artist, always confessing through my art. She is torn at both arms from being pulled in a tug-of-war game. Much like how I feel when I have more things requiring my time than I have time for. On a more human level. She represents my desire to one day have children, my “femaleness”, my nurturing side. The Costume: / It was scavenged from an op shop. Something I absolutely adore doing. And it fits like a second skin, showing my comfort in front of the camera. It’s close colour match to my skin implies nudity which highlights a more general level of comfort with my body, and ability to play a role within my own skin. It’s second hand nature reminds me that a ‘creative artist life’ was never my first choice. In fact, I studied Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths Methods in VCE and always had an aptitude for the sciences. Art was an accident. The Location: / At home in the back yard. Here I feel most relaxed and comfortable. It has been the location of numerous photo shoots and self portraits, so much so that I would feel like I was abondoning this space to take self portraits elsewhere. It also represents for me, my ability to live off my creativity, as my best selling shot was taken here. More generally I enjoy the idea of fences, of what they hold in and out. And of how to break them down. This is a theme I like to play with in a lot of my work- the emotional and psychological barriers we put up around ourselves, often needlessly. Setting up the shot: / I wanted to appear within the forest of easels and yet comfortable which dictated my pose, leaning gently against the fence. This shows my acceptance of the situation and environment and willingness to participate within it. However I am still holding my doll and not interacting with any other part of the environment. This suggests I still cling to something from my childhood, and have insecurites about the art world and my credibility as an artist. Your thoughts?

I’ve been very lucky to have sold a few prints lately, so last night, whilst looking through my activities monitor, I noticed Billyboy getting all excited about selling a framed print to an anonymous buyer, and offering to lick them all over, bark excitedly and maybe hump their leg if they owned up…..he’s such a card…...I decided that I’d be in on that….lol! I was in halftone-mode at the time, and asked if that was the reward to anyone who bought that image….and he replied in the affirmative. Being in a good mood, I decided that the print of New York from the Empire State Building would be an excellent addition to my collection of works by Redbubble artists, since Scott and I had visited in 1998, and our view from the Empire State building had been marred by smog. Bill’s image will help us remember that fabulous trip. Whilst I was in a buying mood, I decided it was time to buy a genuine Paul Vanzella print….my first!! Singapore Cityscape had to be the choice, since Scott and I visited there in 1981, so this would be another fantastic way to help recall our journeys. I can’t wait to see both these images in print, I know for a fact the screen will never do justice to the prints, and no doubt we’ll all be checking them out closely for the landmarks we remember. I’ve ordered both large prints in black frame with black mat, so looking forward to seeing them! / Big Apple / Singapore Cityscape So thanks, to the buyers of my images, who have spurred me onto paying it forward, and buying other’s art, and thanks to Bill and Paul!!!! I’ll claim the leg hump in another life, no doubt :) Gotta love the bub.

I had such a lovely day yestereday – out with friends during the day – a beautiful walk and lovely meal, then off to see the Rat Pack with family last night – I get home and see I have sold a framed print of Angel – to whoever was so kind, I want to say a huge thanks. I wish I knew who it was so that I could thank them personally but instead I will do it publicly. This means a lot to me, especially as I have dropped of the radar quite a bit in recent months. I also want to thank all those who are still commenting on my work and keeping in touch with me – that means a lot too. I hope all is good with you in redbubble land – life is good here and hope to be back on a more regular basis soon. Take care Debxxx

  • BUSINESS IDEA: "DigArt Gallery" YOUR COMMENTS PLEASE?
    by Shaun McDougle

I have wanted to own or run a gallery for some time now mainly to display and sell local artist’s work, but because of the economics of my home town, the fierce competition of the larger cities around me, and the fact that I am a poor photography student with a family and no money, It has never been practical. / The other day I was walking through Wal-Mart (American retail super-center run by under paid needy workers) and I noticed they had new lcd monitors set up at the end of the isles for POS (Point of Sale) demonstrations. These POS screens also had speakers which I had not seen before in a POS. / What I saw in my head was this; A gallery that caters to the artist and the customer by offering an experience I know I have never had at a gallery: You walk in to the gallery and it looks much like a normal gallery, 10 or so 19 inch digital picture frames, each with sound so that the artist can display their work with their interpretation in their voice, or their choice of music, poem, noise, etc. (some of these I know you would be dealing with copyrights). / Depending on technology you might also be able to place your order for what ever size print you like right there at the frame. Preferably printing would be done in house so that the artist could see that the prints are what they need to be, but that would only be if there was enough demand to pay for it. I think that artist control of finished product is a must if this idea is going to work. In a conventional gallery the artist brings the finished piece into the gallery, so there is nothing that can really go wrong. With my idea the artist is letting a third party print their work, and I would want it to be exactly how they want it. / Please let me know what you think of this idea. If you don’t like it, please tell me why or what you would change. If you do like it, please tell me why and what you would change. Thank you for your time and comments, Shaun

Here are my three favourite photographs found on Redbubble today: 1. Tangled Up in You by myoriginalsin . / 2. Mountain Moonlight by Kathie Nichols . / 3. XRay H20 by Wanda LeChene . / For those wondering how I choose my faves (not just of the day, but any time), I ask myself three simple questions: ... 1. Would this look good framed and hanging on my office wall? (This is the number one question that all Redbubblers should ask before uploading.) / ... 2. Would my mother approve? (No, she’s not a prude, but there is a limit!) / ... 3. Does it jump out of the picture, does it have that special something that I can’t explain, but I know it when I see it? (I’m sure most will understand this.) Oh, and one last important question to ask: ... 4. Would this sell? (Not that I am going to sell your work, but will you be able to sell it?) Here are all the people I have displayed as an ‘Admirabubble Artist’ over the last two years. Admirabubble Artist, May 2009 / Admirabubble Artist #2, Oct 2008 / Admirabubble Artist, Oct 2008 / Admirabubble Artist, Sept 08.2 / Admirabubble Artist, Sept 08 / My Fave Artist of the Month / Admirabubble Artist, April 2008 / Favourites of the Day / I Do Declare… / Admirabubble #2 / Admiration Bubble / Absolute Favourite Shot of the Day

Have you been to the Redbubble Store yet? No? Then you are missing out. Get with the program, Go There NOW! 1. There’s still plenty of books available to purchase . / Once they are all gone, well, you’ll have missed out. I have my little piece of Redbubble history. I have my books. Got yours yet? 2. When buying Matte Prints of our work, you need to have a Reusable frame. / It makes sense. It’s the easiest way to display your available work: When the client wants to buy, you tell them this is a sample and we’ll order yours in. I tend to say three weeks … it arrives in two weeks, so you have a week to use it as a sample. Easy. It’s time to go shopping with Redbubble.

I’ve recently made some changes to this portfolio as a consequence of now having PLV on the team and taken some of the more personal work off and it will eventually be replaced onto another (personal) portfolio. In the past I have not made any of my modeling shots available for sale however I am more than happy to make any image available should the request be made. Simply drop either Paul or myself a RB mail ‘thing’ and it will be done. Alternatively, if there is something you have seen in the past and can not find now, please RB mail me with the details and I’ll dig it up for you. As a side note, Disenchanted Photography is now also sporting a flashy new blog and you are all more than welcome to visit, read, comment or throw fruit if you see fit. Disenchanted Blog Many thanks for your continuing support. Cheers, / Matt

  • Add This To Your Cart
    by Stephen Mitchell

One of the best components of RedBubble is both the add this to my cart and Buy Wall Art buttons. Each supplies the uploader and viewers with an amazing tool that allows us to determine two important things: To determine if we are saving our work at the correct resolution (no, not DPI ) To determine which frame-color would best suit the style of a photograph. For any photographers about to be displayed in an exhibition , RB gives you the perfect tool to determine your frames. / Before you take your photograph down to a retail-store, use RB to your advantage. We all know how much fun it is NOT to have someone tell us “Oh, it looks great in that $1500, red-gum, triple-beveled, picture frame! VISA or EFTPOS?” Before you get to that stage, take a look at RB’s very simple setup. Follow The Menu Choose whether you want LAMINATED, MOUNTED, CANVAS or FRAMED. Not all options may be there, the artist may have chosen to have their work in a few of these styles. Size Matters Scroll or look down the window a bit. / You’ll see the words “Print Size” (applies to the image size in a framed print) or “Size” (applies to the size of any image laminated or mounted) To the right of this will be where you’ll discover the true resolution of the image - because some images only have the option of SMALL. Because RB needs to set a PPI that allows our images to be printed at a quality worthy of printing onto these mediums, the size of the image may decrease quite considerably. When an artist saves their work at, say, 2000pixels by 1800pixels, the available DPI is insufficient to create an adequately sized image. If that doesn’t make sense, read some other posts of mine . They should help make sense of all this. Anyway, depending on the resolution of the image, you should see the options for SMALL, MEDIUM or LARGE sized resolutions of the image. I usually click on LARGE. This gives me a big enough picture to determine how well the frame is going to look! Colour, Color, Collar Next down the window is FRAME COLOR. (Considering we live in Australia, this should be spelled COLOUR. But I know why it is not.) This is where the fun begins. As with most photographs, it is the color of the frame that sets it off makes it more appealing to viewers. But when you want the photograph for an exhibition, it’s your final decision that helps sell it. Trust me. A pink protea is going to sell or die depending on whether it has a grey or brown frame! So choose one that befits your photograph. The options are not endless, but they are very good. Unsure what BLACK, CHAMPAGNE, CHARCOAL, CHERRY, MOCHA, WALNUT and WHITE will look like as a wood-grain? Scroll down the window just a little further. You’ve chosen CHARCOAL (grey)? _This is a great combination for the protea ! But it’s the WHITE background that doesn’t work now. Easy fixed. Show Me The Matte Now we see the choice of “MATTE COLOR”. This is the color of the background around the photograph. This often makes all the difference to how well a photograph projects itself from the frame. Test your work on both a dark and light background, just to see the difference it will make to the final wall-hanging. You’ve got it all worked out. Wasn’t really all that difficult after all, was it? ... Now you can either get RB to produce and deliver. Or choose a frame from a local outlet. DISCLAIMER: / RedBubble supplies a great service, product and price-range. This post is for artists who want to choose a picture-frame not available on RB. Take all factors into consideration before making your choice. Read between the lines before ripping them to shreds. Tie your shoelaces before walking.

Thanks to the comments of a knowledgeable viewer, finally these photographs are correctly named! / This is the very rare Austin A70 Hampshire Ute (or PickUp), albeit a little worse for wear and completely beyond restoration. But I like it that way. This once beautiful car will hopefully rust all the way back into the ground from whence its metal and leather parts originated. (Though I plan to obtain a few parts from it next time we visit!) For now, I encourage someone to purchase these three framed images for the pleasure of seeing a historic piece of Australian history. ( Viewed here are Large Flat Frames, Walnut Frame, Off-white Matte. ) / OR / Alternatively, you can purchase them as one triptych wherein a cropped version of each of the previous images resides. ( Viewed here are Large Flat Frames, Mocha Frame, Matte to match dividing colour. ) ON WHITE / ON BLACK /
