  • An image taken during Tony Ryan’s workshop on the weekend. Superb model, great host, and wonderful light. Thanks Tony. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and more than happy with what I learnt and came away with.

  • Recently my friend Keggy was playing a part in a play in the Phoenix Theatre in Exeter, Devon. I went to see him and to take photos of the production. Because of the low light, none of the photos were of particularly good quality. They were all blurry or wrong in some other way. This one was no better than the rest, but I liked the composition of it and so tried to salvage it with photoshop. This is how it came out, and now I think this is one of my best pieces on rb. Agree? Disagree? Comments please! :D

  • Now simply a metaphor for lightmindedness, the butterfly is an ancient symbol of immortality, its life cycle providing a perfect analogy: life (the crawling caterpillar), death (the dark chrysalis) and rebirth (the soul fluttering free). Hence the Greek myth of Psyche (literally “soul”). Depicted in art with butterfly wings, she was a mortal freed from death when Zeus was touched by her love for Eros – and his love for her. / Butterflies are emblems of souls are found as far apart as Zaire, central Asia, Mexico and New Zealand. They appear with their meaning on Christian tombs, and Christ is sometimes depicted holding the butterfly of resurrection. Butterflies represented the souls of slain Aztec warriors and were sacred to several Mexican deities, their flickering wings also symbolizing solar fire, an idea that recurs in Celtic tradition. In China, the butterfly is an emblem of leisure and a young male lover; through a phonetic link with the word for “seventy” it is also, when linked with the plum, a metaphor for beauty in old age. In Japan the creature stands for transient joy, female vanity and the geisha; a pair of butterflies represents conjugal bliss. In folklore illustration, fairies are often shown with butterfly wings. • Epona was the name given to the horse goddess of the Celts. Her worship, widely popular in territories occupied by Rome, was eventually adopted by the Roman armies as well, who honored her as the goddess who protected their stabled horses, while a similar goddess Bubona was alotted the protection of oxen and other cattle. Although she was honored among the insular Celts in Britain and Ireland, the greater number of inscriptions and statues of Epona come from the continent. She was depicted in three poses; astride a horse, standing beside a horse or (less frequently) lying naked on the horse. When these sculptures and bas-reliefs show her holding an emblem, it varies also: sometimes Epona carries a cornucopia, sometimes a goblet, but most often a round bowl or plate. / Said to be the offspring of a mare and a man, Epona could take the tangible forms of both parents. Sometimes, too, she appeared as a rushing river, which suggests she was a fertility goddess, seen by Celts as water spirits. / Black horse/death; Gray horse/life; White horse/birth-re-birth ~ symbolizing light, life and spiritual illumination. / Self ~ Power/Divine Feminine Epona Photograph of mandala sketch, painted, edited and redfield plug-in fractilius in photoshop7.

  • Butterflies are Free Don’t close your hand / Just close your eyes / And I will stay right by your side / And if this world turns cruel & cold / Look to the skies / Don’t you see the truth? / The power of one, the power of two / The power of me loving you CHORUS: / Butterflies are free / Free to come and go / Free to spread their wings / Know that I know / You’ll come back to me / Cause love like butterflies are free You see a light / You hear the call / And if I don’t let you fly / I don’t know you at all So go on and roam / See all that you can / Born unto this earth a curious soul / You and you alone / can make you feel whole / But don’t I add truth / you’ve never known CHORUS The tighter the grip / The more you’ll resist / It’s human nature I suppose / But I’d rather be surprised by a kiss / Then under your control CHORUS Free to come and go / Free to spread their wings / Know that I know / You’ll come back to me / Cause love like butterflies are free CHORUS CHORUS Free to come and go / Free to spread their wings / You’ll come back to me / Cause love like butterflies are free Love this song, loved the movie in the 70’s too with Goldie Hawn and Edward Albert ;) This is an old pen and ink drawing that I did so long ago, photographed and edited in photoshop7 and Redfield plug-in fractilius ~ just keep reminding myself it is Spring…

  • A mystical and magical creature said to build its nest in the mountains and line it with gold and attributed as an attribute of understanding the relationship between psychic energy and cosmic force, as well as being the guardian to the pathway to spiritual enlightenment. This solar hybrid creature, combines the head, claws and wings of an eagle with the body of a lion, symbolizing rulership of air and land and together making a double emblem of the Sun’s power and usually shown next to a ‘tree of life’ or similar symbol as the guardian of the sun and seasons. / The Griffin has been a forceful motif since the second millineum BCE in western Asia, later in the Middle East, Greece and eventually Europe. It was a Hebrew symbol of Persia, had demonic significance in Assyria, but seems in Crete to have played a protective role in palace decoration. In Greece, where the griffin was sacred to Apollo, to Athene as wisdom and to Nemesis as retribution, legend said they guarded the gold of India and of the Scythians. In early Christianity iconography the griffin was used to symbolize the forces of persecution, vengeance or hindrance. But from the 14th century it emerges as an emblem of the dual nature of Christ – human and divine – and of courageous vigilance, which was its usual meaning in heraldry.
