Link listing of free software relating to graphics and imagery. These are either freeware, open source or donationware – not free trials. Some are “light” or free versions of a full-version software. As with anything, PLEASE READ THE TERMS OF USE and Licensing for each thing you download. Just because it is free that doesn’t always mean you can use it for commercial outputs. I have not tried all of these personally, so I can’t give you recommendations on their functionality; the graphic/paint programs I have used (some I still use for certain things) may have notations of my opinion. Many of these are available for both Mac and PC, but you’ll have to go check at the link site yourself – make sure you check the system requirements before you install anything, and be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus. I have accessed all of these links and downloads with no warnings, but it pays to be safe. One last thing…if you use free software and find it useful, please donate to the creators (or upgrade to the paid version if they have one at reasonable cost). Donations are how we can encourage free software makers to continue making the software free. GRAPHICS & PHOTO Editing Ivy Generator NEW – not really an editing program, but it generals fairly realistic ivy for use in your collages or other imaging. Artrage2 (free version & paid version is only $25 – freeware version is somewhat limited but good for basic art) Artweaver (decent simple painting program with variety of drawing styles and supports layers and transparency – good for creating patterns and texture) Cenon for mac or linux (haven’t used this since it won’t work on PC, but it looks interesting and I’d love to try it) Gimp (one of the most powerful open source image editors with an interface and functions similar to Photoshop) ImageMagick Inkscape Vector Graphics program (a bit of a learning curve with this; similar in function to Adobe Illustrator) Paint.net (drawing and paint program; supports layers) Pixarra’s Twisted Brush Free Edition Pixia Drawing & Painting) Photofiltre – this is free, the studio version is 29 euros (the studio version supports layers and transparency and has many functions similar to Photoshop) Project Dogwaffle Free Version Serif DrawPlus Skencil Vector Graphics Smooth Draw Nx PANORAMA MAKERS Open Source Panorama Tools Autostitch Canon Panorama Stitch PanoGuide FRACTAL PROGRAMS Fyre – random image generator. This is pretty cool. NEW (the software isn’t new…the listing is :D) Apophysis Chaoscope Double Fractal Endlos Fractal Explorer Fractal Forge Fractal Studio Fractint Gnu Xaos Mandala Explorer Tierazon Specifically for Mac – fractals Spangfract / Spanky’s Fractals for Mac Listing IMAGE CATALOGUES/ORGANIZERS Lightbox Picasa WEB-BASED IMAGE EDITORS (thanks to Jo Obrien for this link – there’s ten image editors here that are web-based) 10 Web Editors 3D SOFTWARE Amabilis 3D Canvas Anim8or Art of Illusion Blender Bryce 5.5 Daz3D Studio POV-Ray Serif 3D Plus SketchUp sPatch Terragen trueSpace from Caligari Wings 3d World Creator and Buttonmaker by Inet 3d Add-ons, Utilities and Models (listed on Verchi forums) General Use For Bryce and Blender For Daz3D, Poser and Others The above links are to 3 forum threads (stickies) elsewhere – the lists were compiled by me for that forum (which is now defunct, but still accessible), and includes plugins, add-ons and utilities, and links to sites where you can obtain things like free models for 3D and free textures. Please be sure to check the model downloads for licensing terms. If you are unsure about using a model in a sellable product, email the modeler – they are usually very good about responding. Mostly they don’t want you sell or give away the model/mesh, but will usually allow it’s use in a rendered image for sale. If the license doesn’t state that it is available for commercial use, please don’t use it without contacting the owner first. A simple email from them will act as a license for your renders. If they don’t allow it, please don’t do it. Other Useful Utilities PC Inspector Smart Recovery – recover image files from memory cards Startup Control Panel For those who want to control what programs load on startup, but aren’t sure how to do it, this small control panel applet is a useful tool. (I’ve loaded this onto both my daughters’ computers because they don’t understand how to stop the unnecessary programs from loading. This little program was easy to explain to them.) Those who understand computer maintenance and techs won’t need or want this, since you can do the same from your control panel. Startup Monitor A small program that monitors your startups and notifies you when any program/file registers itself to run at startup. RunAlyzer, FileAlyzer, RegAlyzer – from the makers of Spybot S&D RunAlyzer / Gives an overview over many relevant system settings, intended to replace the Tools section currently integrated into Spybot-S&D. FileAlyzer / FileAlyzer allows a basic analysis of files (showing file properties and file contents in hex dump form) and is able to interpret common file contents like resources structures (like text, graphics, HTML, media and PE). RegAlyzer / RegAlyzer is a tool to browse and change the registry. Office Software Open Office.org (comparable to MS Office) Floppy Office (a software package containing a dozen applications. The entire thing will run from a thumb drive, a floppy, or your computer. A very small download for those with connection issues. Contains a useful ftp client.) Computer Security & Antivirus Software How to Remove Antivirus XP, Antivirus XP2008, Antivirus XP2009 (there have been a spate of infections of this nasty, so it seems helpful to include this link, which also includes appropriate software downloads). How to Remove VIRUS ALERT (ditto the above) Spybot Search & Destroy – variety of functions including cleanup of malware, adware, browser protection, system internals and other uses. HijackThis – helps remove browser hijacks, homepage hijacks, identify & remove malware, adware, trojans etc. NOTE: do not use this on your own if you don’t know anything about computers. If you need help to identify and clean up computer infections go to What The Tech (formerly TomCoyote forums) and post your problem in the appropriate forums. If you need help or explanations, bmail me. A-squared – very good anti-trojan. They also have pro versions of the anti-trojan, as well as anti-malware. Malwarebytes – a variety of useful anti-malware tools. Tried and true; I’ve used some of these quite often to clean up other computers. Adaware Free – adware removal tool (other tools available, though not necessarily free) AVG Free Antivirus – Free antivirus & browser protection. I’ve read some minor complaints about false-positives with this, but I’ve been using this for about five years with no complaint. I also install this on every computer I clean. One thing to note about some OEM software installed on new computers – products like Norton & MacAffee: the subscription for free virus signature updates will often run out after a year or two – be sure to check yours if this is what you use. This happened to both of my daughters – thinking they had antivirus software. Avast Free Antivirus – another decent freeware antivirus I’ve used. ThreatFire (formeryly known as Cyberhawk): “ThreatFire is different. It does not rely on signatures, but instead constantly analyzes your computer’s behavior to detect and block any malicious activity. ThreatFire protects immediately so you know your PC and your valuable data is always secure.” Rather than listing all of these available products (which there are many – but be careful, because some will cause more harm than good to your computer) here’s a trusted site where there’s a decent listing of helpful programs: Freebytes Guide to Free Anti-virus/Anti-malware Pacs Portal A fairly large listing of computer start-up programs (.exe files) and what they do, or what they are used for, and whether or not your computer needs them to load on start-up. It also lists start-ups for trojans and malware which makes this site extremely helpful in identifying the files that loading in your processes. There are also some drawing & paint programs in the free/open source category available specifically geared to children in age ranges from 4 or 5 to 10 or 12. Encourage the artist in your children from a young age. Tux Paint Drawing for Children Smooth Teddy LAST BUT NOT LEAST Here’s a site that I check every day. I’ve gotten a couple of pretty decent programs from here. They offer a licensed software download for free, every day. To get it licensed you must download and install it on the day it’s given away – and you need to follow the activation instructions in the downloaded zip file. Give-away-of-the-day There are two drawbacks here: most of the time the software offered is of no use or interest to me personally (that doesn’t make it bad, it could be that stuff offered is very useful to someone else), and secondly…if your computer crashes or you buy a new one, the software license can’t be recovered or transferred to another computer. There are, however, times where the software will be offered again at a later date. NOTE: you can’t always trust the thumbs up/thumbs down ratings. A lot of people will give the software a thumbs down because it’s of no interest to them. I’ve been following this site for about six months, and I have a number of programs I use (including Business Cards MX3.9, Wondershare’s WebVideo Author, Sound Editor Deluxe, A2 Antiwaremalware, Moyea Flash Video MX, Acoolsoft Powerpoint to Video Converter, Photo Story Gold, iSpring Pro, Wondershare’s Photoo Collage Studio and their Flash Slideshow Builder, and Dogwaffle’s “PD Particles”) and like from them, along with 3 games. You can scroll through some of the previous give-aways on the main page to see the variety of stuff they offer. On the weekends, they offer a free game give away on their sister site Game-give-away-of-the-day This is not a complete listing of all freeware available, but it is fairly representational of what’s available, from the simple to the more complex. If anyone has links that fit these categories, please feel free to add them in the comments section, or bmail them to me and I’ll add them into the body with a notation of who submitted them. / __________ One of the reason’s for this compiled list is that I find myself frequently pointing people to links for software of this nature. I just thought it would be easier to keep it one place.

For now I’ll be doing public exhibitions at local libraries, now sure what else I will do since it’s over crowded and way too much competition in NYC I will however let those of you know that I will basically sell as much as possible from a few sites including this one here if any one is interested in products I customized for sale. http://www.zazzle.com/SlayerX and http://www.artwanted.com/SlayerX or even here: I was a bit let down the other day because some person called and stated they were interested in one of my framed pieces only to turn out the person wanted to give me $15 instead of $500 for all 5 works I’m currently trying to sell so wow… right I will keep my comments to self but I literally chewed this guy out for wasting my time. Oh well.. anyway I will see what happens. P.S. Just added Jean Grey but an anime version of the character I will work on a more realistic look for her tonight or sometime this week. / J.Mclean

Hope that I haven’t been spamming everyone with all of the images that I’ve posted today. The truth is that out daughter came home for a long weekend from college last week and brought a nasty bug with her. She was fine when got on the plane and sick when it landed. I’ve been in bed with it for the last two days. As luck would have it, I have a new graphics software package to learn. I decided to make good use of the down time. Except for the aches and fever, it’s been a great day! If anyone is interested the software is called ArtMatic Pro, it’s a ton of fun, and it renders fractals in about 10th of the time my old software took.

Please visit Wikipedia’s definition of Psychedelic Arts to understand/learn more / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychedelic_art definition of psychedelic arts: (from Wikipedia) / Psychedelic art is art inspired by the psychedelic experience induced by drugs such as LSD, Mescaline, and Psilocybin. The word “psychedelic” (coined by British psychologist Humphrey Osmond) means “mind manifesting”. By that definition all artistic efforts to depict the inner world of the psyche may be considered “psychedelic”. However, in common parlance “Psychedelic Art” refers above all to the art movement of the 1960s counterculture. Psychedelic visual arts were a counterpart to psychedelic rock music. Concert posters, album covers, lightshows, murals, comic books, underground newspapers and more reflected not only the kaleidoscopically swirling patterns of LSD hallucinations, but also revolutionary political, social and spiritual sentiments inspired by insights derived from these psychedelic states of consciousness. PSYCHEDELIC INSPIRATIONS / The Art of Jeff Hopp / “I believe that true art is foremostly a form of communication. For me to be interested in a piece, it must tell me something. An artist can communicate many things…. ideas, emotions, events, beliefs, etc. As for my art, I am interested in illustrating events and experiences that I have witnessed on my spiritual journeys. It is a method of capturing moments that cannot be documented in any other way. / They are places that can’t be photographed, and I feel that is important to share them with others.” LINKS & RESOURCES PSYCHEDELIC ARTIST : JEFF HOPP RESOURCES : Psychedelic Arts @Squidoo PHOTOBLOG/IMAGES : Psychedelic Wallpapers & Posters

‘There is an art to mathematics and a mathematics to art.’ / (Hany Farid, computer scientist at Dartmouth University in Hanover, N.H.) According to a february 2007 article from sciencenews.org, titled Fractal or Fake? / Novel art-authentication method is challenged, a debate about fractals in art and Jackson Pollock prompted a defense by the father of fractals, Benoît Mandelbrot, a professor emeritus at Yale University : “I have extraordinary experience of these structures. Drawing on that experience, I do believe that Pollocks are fractal.

This is a very short run-through to get you going using Chaoscope – a free 3D Strange Attractor renderer … Open it, go File -> New / Choose Julia as type, render “Light” or “Plasma” and choose a size that fits nicely on your screen :) I work with 800×600 for previewing, and change that later when I want to render. You then get an empty grey window … press F3 until you get something that looks interesting / Then turn it by left-click and dragging in the window / You can move it with Shift-Left-Click-dragging / And Zoom by Ctrl-Left-Click-dragging There should be a box called “Attractor” visible with sliders … slide those around and see what happens :) The “Iterations” value defines the quality of the render … so keep it low for previewing but when you’re ready for a high quality render, add a couple of 0’s at the end :) You can change the size in the “view” box .. remember to press enter after changing a value otherwise it’ll just change back when you’re not looking :) Once you’re happy with the preview, press F4 to render it … Once it’s done you can go File -> Save image as … and voila :) And then experiment with the other “render” options and the other “Type” options. There’s some cool stuff to be found :D

  • Specifically Software Listing - *UPDATED*
    by Gracey

Specifically Software I’ve done a few updates to this pr…

Specifically Software I’ve done a few updates to this previous journal that lists some new software (well, not necessarily new software, just new to the list). At the very bottom of the page is a listing for a site that offers one “licensed software” for free every day – be sure to look for it, and mark the site to your faves. Then go everyday and check it. Under Fractal Generating programs is “Fyre” – not really a fractal program, but pretty darn close; it generates sine-like random images. It’s pretty cool. Under Graphics is one called “Ivy Generator” – it’s not really a graphics program either, but what it does is one thing – it generates random ivy that looks fairly realistic. Pretty good for those who do image collage work. There’s some useful additions under Utilities for those who aren’t that tech savvy, and a couple for those who are. There’s a section for Office software – the well known open office is listed, as well as a not so well known program called Floppy Office – the whole set (a dozen apps) will run from a floppy disc, a thumb drive or your computer. Small download (the zip file is 1.9mb!) makes it useful for dial-up users – it also has a very easy ftp client included. A new section for computer security programs – includes antivirus, antimalware, anti-everything :D Almost all of the listings are programs I use & trust, or have used in the past. (doesn’t include firewalls but there’s a link to a page that does) There’s also two links for removal of “VIRUS ALERT” and “ANTIVIRUS XP 2009 (or 2009) – there’s been a lot of that going around lately. A couple of site links in this security section as well that will be most helpful to those who need information on computer clean up and safety. SPECIFICALLY SOFTWARE

  • Secrets of a drunken master.
    by Gregoryno6

Among the numerous styles of kung fu that evolved over generations we count Zui Quan, or Drunken …

Among the numerous styles of kung fu that evolved over generations we count Zui Quan, or Drunken Fist. There are several tales that account for this origins of this style. This one most appeals to me: (Quoting Wikipedia) ...a young man… offended a Kung Fu master, who issued him a challenge. The young man knew that his kung fu was no match for the master’s, became very upset, and got drunk. Thinking that by drinking he had thrown away any little chance he may have had, he went into the fight recklessly. To everyone’s surprise, the young man, who had been stiff and awkward before, had now become loose, flexible, unpredictable, resistant to pain, and totally fearless. He defeated the master, and later developed a style based on his fluke. Reckless, unpredictable, totally fearless. That’s my approach to fractal art in a nutshell. I started messing around with Tierazon and MBF Lite pretty much by accident. I went through a kid-in-a-toyshop phase for a few months earlier this year, grabbing programs of any sort off the internet. Originally I was looking for music programs; I got distracted. What can I say? My understanding of how fractals work is slightly less complete than my understanding of nuclear physics. There are tutorials available for both the programs I use, and maybe one day I’ll get around to studying them. In the meantime I’ll continue to explore the possibilities in my own fashion. What’s my secret? It should be obvious by now: I haven’t bothered to learn the rules. I’ve been asked if I have any specific idea of what I’m aiming for when I’m working the fractals. HA! I’m as surprised as any of you that anything I’ve produced was worth a second look, much less a third or fourth or tenth. If I can offer any parallel at all I would say that I go at the fractals like a photographer taking his camera out into the streets. I hope I’m going to be in the right place at the right time to capture a moment. I start with any image I’ve got in the library, or sometimes with the traditional Mandelbrot, and select options at random. Fractals are like any image – they have active areas, and they have static areas. I go for the action. Zoom in, enlarge, go to Julia (and I really must learn one day who the hell this Julia is), change the colours. Whatever! At some point – and I never know when until it’s happened – I get a vibe off something. I don’t see a picture, but I get a sniff of a possibility. Ballerinas, for example, was the final image in a series I called Germs in line. There were no dancing figures, just a line of blobs across the screen. I fiddled with it, didn’t get much that was interesting, but all of a sudden…. magic. Have I made it sound easy? It is easy. All it really takes is an instinct for a memorable image… and patience. I’ve posted about thirty images at RedBubble, and I have maybe another half dozen that I will eventually add. Thirty images out of 1700 that I’ve saved. Actually saved. You can multiply that by any number you choose between five and ten to get an idea of the total images I’ve created. Away you go, then. Fractal your little hearts out! Thank you for your interest. ADDENDUM 26/08/07 – this entry shows in my activity list as having featured on the home page. Did anyone see it? / I didn’t…

1: Tell me something about the image? Fractal Lake is an image i created that is rich in Blue colouring and shows fractals that create a ghostly effect on the water, boats and landscape, the original image was taken from the lake i live on. / 2: How did you create it? I used Photoshop CS3 and placed filters on the original image, i also used gradients and added colour. / 3: What version of PhotoShop did you use? I used Photoshop CS3 Extended. / 4: Any tips or tricks you would like to Share? I am still relatively new to Photoshop but i know that you need to learn all about layers and the techniques and tools that Photoshop has are endless so keep trying things. Also i always duplicate the original image and turn off it’s view ( the little eye next to the layer) that way the original is always safe. I would also suggest searching journals for tutorials in Photoshop, as well as purchasing books as these have been so valuable to me. / 5: How did you go about learning PhotoShop? I am still and will always be learning Photoshop. As i have mentioned search seek and discover as much as you can but most of all play around with all the settings on your duplicated image as that is the best way to begin the learning process. Darren Sharp “Interview By Randy Monteith” /

  • I just had to write this out for someone on deviantArt so I thought I’d post it here too: I work with Apophysis 3D hack so you need to go download it if you don’t have it already… Edit: And you’ll need the Apophysis plugin pack to use some of the variations I mention… What I do is I go through the randomly generated flames until I find one with a colour scheme that I like. Then … (A) / Press F4 to open the transform editor. / Click the “New Blank Flame” button (far left on the toolbar) / You get a single red triangle, that is Transform 1 / Find the “variations” tab on the right, change linear3D to 0 and julia3Dz to 1 / You should now have a perfect circle on your preview. (B) / Click the “Add new transform” button (second from left, green + ) / You get a yellow triangle, Transform 2 / Change its variations values same as for Transform 1 (linear3D 0, julia3dz 1) / You now should still have a perfect circle on your preview… (C) / Now find the “triangle” tab on the right / Use the little arrow buttons and move Transform 2 up a few times, right a few times / Then click the button with a small triangle on it (there’s a box next to it with 125 in) .. this scales the Transform down … keep doing that until you get a nice pattern in your preview (D) / Now on the “variables” tab find the julia3dz value and play around with it, you can use values like -6, -4, -2 etc to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc … it makes quite a difference to the pattern (E) / Now add another Transform like in part (B) but in stead of changing its julia3dz value, play with Bubble until you get a result that you like. You can also add a tiny bit of Blur. (F) / Add another Transform, linear3d 0, and play with Butterfly values until you like it. Or at this point actually play with each of the possible variations and see what effect they have. (G) / You’ll notice that your flame only has one colour. So close the Transform editor. Back in the main window, go Flame -> Calculate color values. If you don’t like the color scheme, go edit it (press F6, find a gradient you like …) (H) / Optionally, go back to the Transform Editor (F4) and click the FX button (far right on the toolbar). This adds a Final Transform (white triangle) ... once again, make linear3d 0, and play with the other variations to see what effect they have. Also scale it and move it, it makes a huge difference to the final result And that’s more or less my process :) I hope this was helpful! PS. You can also use this for Apo 2.08, just substitute julia3dz for julian or juliascope. And linear3d for linear etc. The basic concepts stay the same, so does the interface :)
