Once, when I was free, they came from the grey-brown shrub, hooves lifting above the toppled Manna Gums onto the endless grassland, thundering across the Werribee Plains. Foxhounds ran ahead of huntsmen dressed in pink jackets, cream jodhpurs, black hats and leather boots mounted on a rangy breed of horse, a field hunter. The Master of Hounds led the field, calling out authoritatively and sounding the horn. The Joint Masters, Whippers-In and the other huntsmen followed obediently. My vixen hid in an earth at the base of the You-Yangs, quaking with fear as I ran and turned, placing my back paws into the tracks of my front. Doubling back to confuse and escape the hounds and the dry-mouthed huntsmen. My vixen and I celebrated our escape on the plains. We fed on swamp wallaby, ground-nesting birds and lizards. We stalked unsuspecting rabbits by the slender light shafts of the moon. We brought home live dunnart for our newborn pups to teach them to stalk and kill their own prey. We drank fresh rainwater caught rocky hollows enlarged by the Aboriginal people into wells to hold water even in dry seasons. We were free. More skilled, more numerous, they came again repeating their monthly ritual, their tradition, what they called their sport. Their rage unleashed, the hounds bayed, horns blew and men cried out for blood. With my vixen’s throat opened and her heart stopped, the Master at Hounds called ‘Brought to Book’. I fled the howling pack. With the ocean scent at my side, I ran the length of the Plain, through towns, fields, through the suburban sprawl to the city’s docks. Clamour, frenetic activity and the scent of man were everywhere so I scurried inside an open container and hid behind a pile of boxes. Exhausted and afraid, I fell into a deep sleep. I dreamed I was rocking, dancing on the ocean of grass I had left behind. Nausea gripped my stomach but I couldn’t wake. The rocking became violent and saliva spilled out of my mouth and along the line of my jaw. Foaming sweat soaked my ruby coat and brush. Lifted and swung, I woke with a start as the container hit the ground with a thud and a deafening crash. A man opened the door. I bolted amid his screams and the ensuing chaos of men running in pursuit. Vehicles blasted their horns and sirens sounded. I had crossed Bass Strait and was in Tasmania. The frigid air burned my nostrils as I breathed in and turned to a platinum mist as I breathed out. I gathered my strength and fled through and away from the town, through deep green fields and crops, along coastline until my legs couldn’t carry me any further. Hurriedly, I dug a shallow den. The earth was dry and hard, knotted with Boobyala and Correa roots so I broke them with my teeth, pushed them aside and made my underground nest where I curled into a tight ball and dozed. I listened to familiar and unfamiliar sounds of life aboveground. The thud of wallabies and the slab of wombat punctuated Quoll yaps and Devil screeches. Birds called out dissonant songs. Ravens chanted, dropping and slurring three melancholy notes with exquisite irony. Grey currawongs clicked as if marking time. Wattlebirds retched and retched again. Plovers called a warning to stay away from their ill placed eggs. Exhausted from my ordeal, I dozed and slept for days but was raised by pangs of hunger, twisting and turning my gut. I crawled above ground and began picking at drupes from a Currant Bush but was unsatisfied much to the amusement of gulls squawking mockingly about my head, spilling guano over the headland. I pushed my nose into the wind and smelled meat. Tracking it, I found it had been buried in a clearing just beyond the scrub. I waited, hiding until the dusk sky turned to an indigo bruise, until it was safe to make my move. Breathing deeply, I recognised it as kangaroo, old and dried but perfectly edible. I dug, tore and devoured the tiny morsel. Soon after, I began to feel ill. My heart raced and I became dizzy and unbalanced. I staggered haphazardly towards the drooping soft needles of a Casuarina to take shelter. The gentle sound of the ocean was lost to blood pounding through my veins. Occasionally my pulse would slow almost to a stop then race ahead again in a staccato rhythm. My vision became blurred and an agonising stomach cramp knocked me off my feet. My nerves began to tingle and all sense and sensation became acute and painful. Dragging myself through the dirt, inch by inch, I found my den and crawled inside. Delirious, I waited to die. I had taken a 1080 bait. Death came slowly. Once it had, I travelled back over the foaming Bass Strait surge to the sweet Kangaroo and Quaking grasses of the Werribee Plains. My spirit rolled with the salty breeze, over the grass awns and florets, over the Manna and Yellow gums. As if caught in a gust of wind, I rose up the You-Yangs to Flinders Peak. There I sit gathering what warmth the sun has impregnated into the pink granite. I rest my head on my crossed paws and I stare out across the Plains towards the lights of the city and daydream. Sometimes I see myself standing my ground, looking my hunter in the eye. Our thoughts transpose and we acknowledge that we are the same. Our presence here is both destructive and unwelcome. Silently we let the other pass, free to live with the burden of our mutual misplacement. ©

Last night, Sky posted that she was sad that one of my shots had not received enough exposure. Shortly after that post, my “views” on that shot (Color Me!) exploded to well over 120 in just one night. I want to send a heartfelt thanks to Sky and each of you for helping Color Me! get so many views and a ton of favoritings. Maybe this is a bit trite, Ms. Fox, but it felt great this AM, waking up and seeing so many folks had viewed COlor Me! – NOT ONLY Color Me! but others shots garnered more views and favorites in my portfolio. I guess I can only say thank you very much, Sky….maybe “that’s what friends are for” (song lyric). This morning made me think about that song. / / If any of you are unfamiliar with her work, stop by and give SKY FOX portfolio a real glimpse. Outstanding photos, lots of sales, and some friendship for all. STATS: 210 views, 13 favoritings, numerous comments / Only 2 words – GRACIAS AMiGOS/AMIGAS

  • "My Creativity" An interview with Sky Fox
    by Colin Tobin

I’d like to extend a gracious thank you to Sky Fox for taking the time to open up and share so m…

I’d like to extend a gracious thank you to Sky Fox for taking the time to open up and share so much with us. How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? When I stumbled across photography – I reached my Zen – finally! It was as if one huge part of me was missing and I could never put my finger on it. I couldnt fill that void. Not really a void but it was as if I didnt know all of me. Odd feeling in which I do not miss. It was as if I was a half circle until I found photography – then I came into full circle with nothing missing and everything in my vision. I was finally ‘full’! This was a period of time in my life where I was desperately searching for Enlightenment. Ask and you shall receive! Im now well on my way down the path to Enlightenment – at this point – and I have been blessed to have my camera with me all the way! However – I was not always the person I am today. I suffered horribly from Ego – as I had been thrown every obstacle LITERALLY possible yet I continued to walk on and rise above. I had to be convinced I was going to Kick this worlds ass or it was going to eat me alive – those were my two options. Through that time I had to be a ‘bad ass’ or die. So I lived in darkness until my 20’s as my EGO was driving me rather than my Enlightenment – for I had none. I had a fairy rough go in the early years of my life which I dont whine about – it has made me the person I am today. However – when one has to overcome such drastic and severe obstacles for mere survival – one tends to go into EGO mode to make it through. Its a natural human condition. One CAN NOT possess both EGO and ENLIGHTENMENT – therefore – I had to let one go. The one would be my Ego, Amen! So there I was – 14 – some lil Cherokee girl with a dead Granny and no one else that wanted her – same as the day I was born which is why Granny raised me til she died in the first place. So – I did as Granny instructed and left the reservation the second she drew her last breath – knowing the ‘government’ (very scary to Native Americans) was coming to do with me whatever they saw fit. In short because I do tend to be verbose – being creative allows me to express myself as strongly as I would like to – now that I lack any and all Ego. Expressing yourself is much easier when youre suffering from your Ego. You simply do what an ass would do under said situation. Without an Ego however – one sees the forest and the trees! All of the light shines straight on you! You dont need a spotlight! You have one already burning – forever! There are no more battles for you arent willing to fight! You have nothing to prove to anyone for your actions speak louder than words ever could. Being creative allows me to better explore my path to Enlightenment and hope others will come with me! It also gives me a platform to touch issues I feel need more attention in our society. / __ Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful Oh wow – this one is impossible! I am literally inspired by everyone! All of us have our own special style. Allow me to instead tell you whom on redbubble has helped me make this venture both professional and profitable: / When I first came to the bubble – I met a guy named Karl Denton / Instant connection! He cared for me and likewise I too care for him. He took HIS time and a bit of money to set me up with a site and an email – both extremely professional. I will never forget this gesture and to this day I love him dearly! Not only because he is awesome but because he genuinely cared about me. Also – I must mention Mr Sean Farragher / This man has supported me from a point-and-shoot all the way to DSLR! He has hit EVERY single solitary piece of my work! He has rooted for me and is so very kind – loving – supportive and encouraging! I am so blessed he even knows my name! Making the Home Page is always a very special and humbling experience! Very meaningful to me to be acknowledge in such a way amongst so many astonishing artists! I LOVE every single one of you – even the ones that hate me – for they are still suffering from their ego. No one can possibly hate me unless its spawned from evil jealousy because I know – as you know – I have never hurt anyone in my life. Ever. I am known for going out of my way for people. I rest in that. I will give them time to get onto this wonderful path and all will be forgotten! But nonetheless – I love those people too and hope they soon find their path. / __ Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you. Easy! Artist: Scott Ruhs / Artist: Dennis Rubin / Artist: Brad Sauter / (Too many misunderstand my flag. This flag is about PRIDE NOT RACISM. Get over the whole being offended over it!!! I adore it as much – if not moreso – than the American Flag. Its about PRIDE. Nothing less – nothing more. I am American by Birth and Southern by the grace of God and Im not afraid to express that. (If this flag bothers you – read more. You have much to learn.) Artist: Andy Harris / Artist: Nikki Mulkern / Thank Y’all so much for taking interest in my interview. I appreciate all of you! Redbubble is such a healthy place and I am so very blessed to be here with all of you! I am very grateful for my talent because with it came many… MANY friends. A lot of love here and Im all about giving it and taking a bit. Thanks for showing me some love in asking me these questions. I hope you found my answers of interest! Love, Peace and Tolerance, ~ Sky Fox / _______ Also checkout MuscularTeeth’s interview with Karin Taylor.

Hi friends. If you haven’t already found her, I’d like to introduce you to the art of Emily-Fox Amazingly this young lady is only seventeen. As a reward for all her hard work and talent I think we should offer her every encouragement we can. I feel we more senior members of Redbubble should be encouraging the junior members as they are the new up and coming generation of artists. So here is Emily and then there follows a selection of my favourites from her portfolio. How cool is this: This next image has earned so many comments it makes me wonder if my encouragement is really needed at all: One more and then you must go and see her work for yourselves …

  • The making of Fox Confessor.

For those interested, I’m going to run through the process of constructing my Fox Confessor design. It was a fun thing to make, it’s always good to step away from the computer once in a while! Step 1: Source photo For this design, I used a photo that i found on the Wikimedia Commons. I knew I wanted to do a fox, so it made it a little easier to sort through the library of images. Eventually I found a great shot that I was happy to use. After downloading the images, I used Photoshop to tweak the levels and up the contrast. The reason for this will be explained in a minute. Step 2: Image preparation Once I was done tweaking the image in Photoshop, it was time to bring it into Illustrator. Here I applied a live trace effect and adjusted the settings to limit the effect to 3 colours only, which will later make up the 3 layers of paper in my design. Before I mentioned tweaking levels to up contrast in the image. The reason I did this was to help the live trace yield better results. It basically helped to emphasise the dark vs light areas. If I didn’t do this, then the live trace might have looked a lot flatter. Kind of hard to explain, sorry! After the live trace, I went through a rather tedious, but necessary task. I find when you apply a live trace effect, its always going to be obvious that you’ve used that effect. A straight live trace often looks a little dodgy in my opinion. So basically, I used the live trace as a guide to draw my own shapes. I set up 3 layers, one for each level of colour, then drew shapes with the pen tool, using the live traced image as a rough guide. This gave me an image which had smoother corners and a simplified shape overall. Below is the result of this step. Once I had finished each layer of colour, I printed each of them out separately in black on A4 paper. The preparation is now complete, so now its time to get into the fun hands on stuff! Step 3: Lots of careful cutting and sticking There isn’t too much to this step. Above, you can see a shot of my workspace (its not a very pretty workspace). At the top you will see the three bits of coloured paper that I have used for the 3 layers. On the cutting mat, you can see one of the print outs that I’m going to use basically as a mask. What I did was stick that mask print out to the back of one of sheets of coloured paper, then carefully cut it out with a scalpel. I started with the bottom layer (the orange) which was the biggest, and easiest to cut out. Once this was complete, I stuck the layer down in position onto an a3 piece of tracing paper. Now it was time to repeat the same process on the next layer. In the above photo, I hadn’t stuck the second layer down yet, it was just sitting there for the moment. This was quite fortunate, because it was at this time that I decided it’d look cool to add some line work detail to the orange layer. I removed the second layer to complete the line work, then proceeded to stick it down for good. After I had done that, it was time to do the final layer. I applied some more line work to the top layer, but being a dark colour it is quite subtle. You can kinda see it in the close up detail shots though. Once the final layer was stuck down, I was pretty much done, just had to scan it into the computer and upload. All that was left to do after that really was to clean up…. I hate that part, and i am still yet to do it…. And here is the final result: I hope this has been useful, sorry for making it so wordy! This project took me about a week and a half to complete. The documented execution above only took about half a day, but the ideas and thinking took the rest of the time up. I usually go into a process like this pretty well prepared with a pretty clear picture in my head, but that takes time to develop. If you want something explained better, or expanded upon, feel free to ask and i’ll be happy to oblige. Thanks for reading :)

  • Transformers II Premiere, London (Megan Fox! Shia! Tyrese! John!)

Transfomers. They’re more than meets the eye, and because I was never that much a fan of the cartoons, I really liked the previous movie a lot. Pity I’ve now seen this movie and was more than a little disappointed by it. I believe the wording of my Facebook status afterwards was: “[I] watched Transformers II to dull the pain of work… and now I’m turning to alcohol to dull the pain of Transformers II”. If you don’t remember the previous movie, I even challenged myself to write a 15 minute version of Transformers in homage to Cleolinda Jones’ excellent book filled with similar (and certainly superior) style synopses. Whether I can do one for Transfomers II without putting myself through watching it again (which I’m kind of reluctant to do) I’ll have to see. Still, I had the day of the Premiere off work (after a half-marathon the day before), and I even had the chance to line up a bit earlier than usual, this time in the hope of getting photos of an unusually attractive cast (by which I obviously mean Megan Fox) Was it worth it? For the amount of time I lined up – No. For the experience – perhaps. To the possibly permanent detriment of my relationship to my camera and its autofocus system – Yes, or maybe No, depending on the wording. / All of a sudden, dozens of employees texted their bosses to explain they couldn’t come in to work because of the giant robots roaming around parts of London… / I see….. / In defence of these teen girls’ efforts, some of my pieces of analysis have been accused of similar incoherence. / The award for cutest reporter of the day goes to…. (I felt this album needed to be balanced by the inclusion of at least one female who wasn’t Megan Fox. And besides, she is cute..) / Actor John Turturro, who may or may not have been wearing his awesome hawaiian boxers and ‘Sector Seven’ singlet under his suit…. / ... although it is possible he was. / Actor Tyrese Gibson (and behind him, the head of security at most of these premieres. Hmm…. perhaps I should pixelate him out of the picture to protect his identity?) / Actor Josh Duhamel, whom I can never quite accurately distinguish from actor Timothy Olyphant (from Deadwood and Die Hard 4.0). Not that this is a problem I need to deal with on a daily basis.. / Actress Megan Fox (did I swoon? Well… no. But I learned in the most devastating way imaginable that my camera appears to be female in that it staunchly preferred to not lock focus on her for some reason. We’re still not on speaking terms…) / Once again, actress (or should I say Walking Magazine Cover) Megan Fox. The black and white conversion in this photo and the other one is due to the distractingly yellow jackets of the police in the background. I simply call this photo Fox / We’re about half-way through the premiere and Megan Fox’s People find the time to brush her hair and reapply some makeup. I haven’t seen that at a premiere before… / Actor Shia LaBeouf may also be a victim of poor Pentax continuous centre-focussing, if his expression is anything to go by. That said, tens of thousands of screaming girls did their best to cheer him up / He doesn’t mind girls working on his engine. In fact, he prefers it. (Shia’s character did get some of the best lines in the previous movie, and apparently he and the actors who played his parents ad libbed a fair amount. Impressive) / I was hoping for a smile, but I suppose a blown kiss from Megan Fox isn’t too bad a thing to take home with me. / “Tom, the weather forecast is for rain and thunderstorms, and a sixty percent likelihood of giant fu^$king ROBOTS. Now let’s go back to the studio” / I’m still not entirely convinced Megan Fox is a good actress, but I am one hundred percent certain that most guys do not care. And her interviews are generally brilliant to listen to, so it’s a rare case of liking the actress more than the characters. (I’m sure she’s overjoyed…) / “Surely y’all’s name can’t ALL be ‘ebay’??” Megan Fox makes a fair point. / It’s director Michael Bay. If his movies are anything to go by, I expect (and sort of hope) that every time he has breakfast his toaster explodes in slow motion and five different camera angles!! / Interviewer : Hi / Megan Fox : Hi / Interviewer : .... / Megan Fox : ... / Interviewer : ... / Megan Fox : ... / Interviewer : Yeah. That’s all I’ve got, pretty much. Mind if I just keep staring at you? / Megan Fox : I guess not / We’re now three-quarters of the way through the premiere, and just about to do the group shot in front of the giant robot with the rest of the cast. Obviously it’s about time for another quick make-up touch-up. (And I agree… I reapply my lip-gloss several times each day> it’s all about having pride in your appearance, people!!) / Memo to : Shia LaBeouf . From : Every guy in Leicester Square. Message : YOU. ARE.STANDING. NEXT. TO. MEGAN. FOX. COULD. YOU. AT. LEAST. TRY. TO. LOOK. CHEERFULL?? Regards, Male population of Earth. / Ah… he’s finally realised it. Well noticed, sir. / The group shot. I don’t want to use this photo to pour scorn on the autofocus of the Pentax K10D in high pressure situations, but I set the camera to centre-focus for this (for… obvious reasons) but actor Tyrese Gibson on the far left is the person most in focus. And that makes no sense unless my camera hates me, or is a woman. Or possibly both. / Umm… okay. Well, at least I got one shot not obscured by thousands of reaching fans!! / Sigh… I’ll see you for the premiere of Transformers III, then?? Well, fanboy adulation notwithstanding, it joins the recent premieres I’ve been to: / The Hangover – Heather Graham! And some guys! / Tormented – People! Other People! / The Jonas Brothers 3D Experience – Jonas! Jonas! ... and Jonas! / A Night at the Museum2 – Stiller! Gervais! Azaria! / State of Play – Mirren! Crowe! / Star Trek – JJ Abrams! Eric Bana! Sylar! As well as the total Archive of Premieres So, fair enough I got a couple of not-too-bad-shots. But I won’t lie, it wasn’t my favourite premiere from a photographic perspective. Can’t wait for the movie, though, with my expecations kept firmly in check at ‘Terminator Salvation’ levels. Until next time!

Just got back from dropping off two artworks for a new juried art show in August. I was told the gallery is expecting over 300 entries for the show, so wish me luck in getting accepted. I’ll find out on Tuesday next week if I pass jury selection. I dropped off the following artworks for the show: Icon IV: The Fruit Bat Icon III: The Rabbit Also TONIGHT is the artist reception for “Art of the Gecko” at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA). The Academy is currently hosting a live gecko exhibit, and asked area artists to decorate a blank gecko sculpture for display at the museum. I will be showing “Golden Gecko”. In addition, I contacted the museum about showing some of my original artwork (as well as signed and matted archival art prints) in the museum gift shop. They agreed, and so the following artworks are now for sale at the shop: Conjoined: The Geckos This original gecko artwork (and well as the signed art prints) will be on sale through the end of the summer in conjunction with the current gecko exhibition. In addition, the Academy asked me to submit dinosaur and butterfly-themed works as they have ongoing (and popular) dinosaur and live butterfly exhibits at the museum. So I recently made the following, which are now also at the gift shop. I will be dropping off matted/signed art prints in August as well The Lizard King Butterfly I As always, check out my website at http://www.lynnetteshelley.com for the latest news and info.

  • "The Fantastic Mr Fox" Premiere Photos (Clooney! Murray! .. Cindy Crawford?)

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder, and my Pentax’s ISO1600 setting is grimly dusting itself off for the only time it gets any use. Movie premieres are BACK, and they’re getting trickier.. / It’s the BFI British Film Festival. And what does that mean? It means Yellow Cap Guy ain’t leaving Leicester Square for the next fortnight…. / It’s George Clooney! I’ve actually watched very few of his films outside of the Oceans Series, but he’s never offended me in the way of, say, the Matthew Brodericks and Sean William Scotts of this world. / George Clooney has won an Oscar and portrayed Batman on screen. (Those two facts are unlikely to be related) / Incidentally, I too now am in proud possession of a genuine George Clooney autograph. That said, the stylised ‘GC’ initial-based autograph leaves me open to accusations I’m passing off the autograph of West Indian opening batsman Gordon Greenidge as that of George Clooney. Never mind… / It’s comedian Jason Schwartzman. I had to check IMDB to find out why he was important. I recognise some films but oddly none of his roles. Never mind, the hairstyle and bow tie are clearly top-notch. / Director Wes Anderson was also responsible for ‘The Royal Tennenbaums’ which was okay I guess, and ‘The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou’, which made me laugh twice… in the trailer. / I don’t know who he is, and I’m not sure how I feel about him dressing his son as a smaller version of himself. / Is… is that… former supermodel Cindy Crawford?? Well, let’s add a fourth supermodel to my list, then! Fittingly for the way the universe works, my autofocus and framerate both played up the instant she got out of her car, and a couple of seconds later my camera’s battery failed. I quickly changed it, but by the time I did that she was gone.. / Bill Murray!! Ghostbusters : brilliant. Broken Flowers : moving. Lost in Translation : brilliant AND moving. (In this picture, I believe he was looking up and waving at some people in looking out of windows in hotel rooms overlooking the ‘Square) / We shared a moment. He still owes me five dollars. / Actress Thandie Newton, whom I snapped at last year’s Rock’n’Rolla premiere. Back then, I was unable to determine whether she actually had two eyes as over the course of a whole evening all I photographed were profile-aspect pictures. Newsflash : she’s pretty AND has two eyes. (She also appears to have an offspring…) / Maryam D’Abo played the Bond Girl in 1987’s ‘The Living Daylights’ (one of my favourite Bond Films). Cool! She’s not in this film, but I’m not raising any objections to her presence here. / Finally, here is everyone’s favourite paranoid megalomaniacal xenophobic dictator, from the film ‘V for Vendetta’ it’s clearly John Hurt! (He also, IMDB informs me, played wand-maker Ollivander in the first Harry Potter film, a much more benign role) So… that was that. It was actually a very big premiere in the sense that they closed off all of the centre of Leicester Square and had footbridges to not one but two separate cinemas. Oh, and Yellow Cap Guy update – I saw him wandering around at lunch, and I assume he found his way into the central part where all the cool kids got to. Next up : it’s hard to say – the BFI Film Festival has lots of premieres, first showings and gala screenings… For now, it’s the latest film to join The Archive of Film Premieres The last few entries of which were: / The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus – Gilliam! Cole! Garfield!? / Pixar’s ‘Up’ – Literally no (0) cast or crew showed! / Creation – Bettany – Yes! Connelly – No!) / The Ugly Truth – Heigl! Butler! / Inglourious Basterds – Tarantino! Kruger! But not Pitt! ... now, when will I have enough celeb shots to make a second Calendar of Movie Celebs?!!! / Until next time!
