How to Tolerate the Artistic Ego

Several recent forum entries and journals have prompted me to think about the following – if you are not a forum-watcher it probably won’t mean anything to you – if you are then you might enjoy. The spontaneous formation of grooming-clusters around baboon troop leaders and the subordinate wolf’s adoration for his pack leader are both good examples of the fascination that accompanies the subordinate attitude in nonhuman social relationships. Something very similar to the social animal’s submissive response can be detected in the psychology of human crowds. We find the same process operating, in what is probably closer to its original context, in the behavior of soldiers under stress. It crops up again in religious and political indoctrination. The process of self-subordination is always accompanied by a certain paralysis of the individual’s own thoughts and motives. Even in the most mundane of human relationships, the individual who accepts a dependent status develops a barrier of inhibitions that prevents him from relying on his own judgment and initiative in the company of anybody they perceive as a superior. Their perception is distorted. The greater the dominance gap, the more complete will be the subordinate’s psychological capitulation. This is borne out by the extraordinary fascination ‘celebrities’ hold for the ordinary people with whom they come into casual contact. Although we may feel that this primitive pattern of psychological processes is no longer necessary and that rational human society should be able to get along without it, we cannot escape the fact that it continues to operate all around us. The process of emotional subordination performs the key function of making one animal follow another. It must rank as one of the most important elements in the sociable disposition of several hundred vertebrate species. In particular, it still plays an important part in the working of our own society, this individual suspension of assertive altitudes results in two kinds of psychologies. The first of these is to be found in the person who habitually defers to nearly everyone they meet and whose ego-ideal is in this way transferred to other persons or personalized institutions. Such a person is emotionally dependent on authority figures to the same degree that he/she is obedient to them. At the opposite extreme we encounter the primal leader – the awesome figure who loves no one but himself and whose narcissism is tempered only by practicality. A characteristic of this personality type is that he feels little or no need of others. He is self-confident and self-sufficient. He defers to no one and enjoys a high level of self-esteem because his ego and his ego-ideal are one. To say that his ego and his ego-ideal coincide is to say that this high-power personality is exactly what he wants to be. Unlike most people, he feels little or no motivation towards self-improvement or the improvement of his image in other people’s eyes. A human community can be divided up into generally dominant or generally dependent personality types, not so obviously in accordance with how they behave but in accordance with how they feel about themselves and each other. A high-dominance person describes themselves as feeling a high sense of self-respect. They feel masterful and superior in a very general sense. They feel sure of their ability to interact with other people and to succeed in anything they set their mind to. They never feel shy, timid, or embarrassed. At the other end of the scale, the low-dominance person describes himself as feeling inferior to most people. He doubts his ability ever to manage, He does not think highly of himself. He would rather be somebody else if he were given the chance. High-dominance feeling should not be confused with domineeringness. The high-dominance personality is not necessarily a nasty person. High-dominance feeling implies confidence rather than aggressiveness. Aggression springs from the mis-match of ego and ego-ideal – the wider the gap, the more aggressive the individual. This is one of the reasons that bullies are so aggressive yet collapse so easily when confronted with a more dominant personality. The bullying stems from the submissive actual ego state, attempting to exercise its ‘will to power’ to reach an unattainable ego-ideal. Unwarranted aggression, bullying, intolerance of dissenting viewpoints, prejudice toward anything ‘different’ and blind obedience to authority are all clear indicators of a submissive personality – in extreme examples like cults, military dictatorships or authoritarian government the individual has subordinated his/her own ego for a parasitic super-ego that fuels the authoritarian machine with (amongst others) notions of ‘patriotism’ and ‘nationality’. The wholly subordinate members of the ‘tribe/nation’ follow every instruction unquestioningly. (remember Kurtz , ‘Lord of the Flies’ or ‘Animal Farm’?) We may like to assume that modern man is successfully replacing this hierarchical pecking order element in his cultural system with a preferable egalitarian foundation. However, it is not in his power to push back the genetic clock. There are three specific character traits of human society which it clearly shares with other animal societies. In the first place, our social past has insured that every individual of the species inherits a drive to climb the dominance ladder. All social vertebrates are status-seekers, and Homo sapiens is no exception to the rule. A community needs capable leadership and an efficient order of priority. Competition between communities has developed the sort of animal who will devote a large part of his available energy to winning a distinct and preferably a high-ranking social position. This has resulted in what theorists have called a ‘will to power.’ Whatever we call it, it is this psychological sensitivity to dominance which gives meaning to such words as fame, respect and glory. On the other hand, it follows that if a community is to cooperate efficiently then its status-minded members must eventually stop their competitive ladder climbing and accept the positions they have reached so far. This has resulted in a second distinctly hierarchical characteristic. Man, like every other successful social vertebrate, has evidently inherited a well-developed capacity for deference which checks his dominance ambitions at appropriate moments. The third part of this social legacy is a logical result of such a capacity for subordination. Since everybody must settle for a unique interpersonal position relative to everybody else’s, we are left with a society of inequality. Every individual involved in human society consistently operates within a fairly stable mood somewhere in between the two extremes of boisterous self-assertion and timid accommodation. This is where tolerance comes in – very few of us are at the extremes of the scale described above – most of us spend our lives bouncing around in the in-between just getting on with life the best we can. We need to be tolerant of each others differences – a society that is not, is doomed to fracture and eventual collapse. This is not to say that dissent or disagreement has no place (I could hardly agree with that – dissent is the wellspring of Art) simply that there is an Art to be found in tolerance.

The new release is primarily about forums. You will find them here and also linked to from a slightly redesigned people page. We see forums as a platform for: / • Getting help and advice / • Discussion on technical and marketing issues / • Promoting events (both in and outside RedBubble) / • Providing feedback to RedBubble about what we should be doing / • Discussion on matters of general (or controversial) interest / • Getting feedback on your work. It is up to the community to decide what topics are raised in the forums and what direction they take. We ask that you continue to respect each other’s feelings and to foster positive debate (while not being anemic or being afraid of being controversial). Also in this release, international purchasers can now buy and there have been a large number of bug fixes (hopefully we got to yours!).

In order to facilitate our communication and interaction within the huge Redbubble site, we have begun a Group specifically for Former DPF Members!! I’ve just been advised it is now LIVE and we can join and upload to this Group. This has been started so we don’t have to have 50 extra people on our Watchlist with masses of uploads into our Activity Monitor every day – it means that we can go join the FORMER DPF MEMBERS group, tick that box when we upload a photo, and go browse the Group the same as though it were DPF – as a separate entity. We can also post threads in our own Forum (please play nice – if you have something to discuss with an individual member, please Bubblemail them, not use the Forum!!). Gail and I will be Hosts for now and I’ve requested Gail’s pawpaw pic be used as an Avatar to begin with as it is a lovely striking photo which I think most of us recognise. Any concerns please bubble me … this has happened quicker than I thought so it has caught me on the ‘back foot’ but will post some information in the Group Forum this evening. Cheers!! / Rosalie

Making an image show up in a journal entry or forum post

Go to an image that you want to display in a journal post and right-click on it, then select “Copy image location”- Now go and open a journal entry (or forum post or whatever) and paste the link in there. It will look something like this: Now, just add an exclamation mark before and after the image and you are done adding an image. Now you can add text and other images and save the work and your image will show up. For Internet Explorer users: 1. Right-click on the image and go to properties. Then: 2. highlight and copy all of that text and then paste it into your journal entry or forum post. 3. Add the exclamation mark before and after the link as shown above. 4. Add other text and images and you should be able to save and see your pictures! —-—-—-—-—-——- Trying to do this using Safari: Here is an image I loaded. I right-clicked and chose “Copy Image Address”. Let’s see if this works:

To all members of RB, I would value your opinion on the latest developments around the ‘moderated’ (censored) forum topics. I recently raised some questions in the ‘Friends of RB’ forums and in the ‘test the moderators’ thread in the main forums. / My questions were largely unanswered – the main thread was declared ‘finished’, euphemism for shut down because of awkward questions? / I had a piece of spurious contract law quoted to me to justify the breach of freedom of expression. (throw away the First Amendment and the European and UN Human Rights – you’ve signed a contract…so there) I then sent this b-mail to one of the hosts – I have not had an acknowledgement or a reply yet. ..................................... Thank you for taking the time and trouble to respond in depth. I, of course, understand the desire to implement the PNP and keep the forums constructive and as friendly as possible (I always try to be polite when I insult someone!) What I have some considerable doubts about is the pre-censoring of comments before they have been publicly aired. I do not envy you your role in taking action that violates the most fundamental principle of freedom of expression (I am not surprised you feel a bit uncomfortable with it) If the comments were given some ‘air time’ first, and if any were clearly and plainly seen by a majority to be offensive/insulting, then they could be edited without breaching those principles. I asked Jo about this in another forum and she quoted the piece of contract law contained in the user agreement that we all signed when we joined RB. 99 times out of a 100 that would never need be tested. But believe me, if ever a lawyer attempted to use a clause in a contract to argue against a Constitutional principle, they would be toast in seconds. I realise that Australia has no Constitutional protections for freedom of speech (other that in political expression) but you have the thorny problem of hosts from countries other than Aus making ad hoc decisions on the output of other contributors. It a question of jurisdiction. Which brings me to another contentious point – This is not meant to cast any aspersions on any of the forum hosts like yourself who are fair-minded and generous people doing their best to help RB and its members. 1. You have no mandate. You have not been elected to the position – therefore, by what legal right or authority can you participate in censorship? 2. As a self-appointed group without legal authority, where then do you gain the moral authority (and presumed superiority) to pre-judge the contributions of others? / Are you professors of Art? Law? Philosophy? Theology? I know the common sense response to these questions is obvious – we are only talking about censoring some bad language, so what is the problem. The problem is that you are breaching a time honoured and hard fought for principle in exchange for an undemocratic, insidious, method of ‘control’ / The choice between having to view a few swear words or insults (which only ever reflect on the ignorance of the perpetrator) or submitting to censorship by committee of ‘freemasons’ is no choice at all, particularly for anyone who ascribes to be an artist. Ps. I note this moderation thread has been marked ‘finished’ Jo tells me it is because it is an ‘old’ thread – strange, there seem to be many ‘old’ threads scattered about the forums that run and run. Is there a particular problem with this one? ................................... This, for me, violates a fundamental principle of freedom of expression – it is a very small step from censoring words to censoring images – No artist worthy of the name would have anything to do with the abhorrent practice of this form of censorship based on the above method. I will no longer be submitting comments to any ‘pre-moderated’ forum and I would encourage any artist who cares about freedom of expression to do the same.

Last week I was forwarded a quote: / “Perfect normal person + Internet = Irrational Idiot” I think it’s worth pondering this for a moment. We are all real people, with all the normal thoughts, feelings and insecurities you see out in the real world. I treat forums like a party full of people. I don’t spread rumors, shout out nasty comments or gang up on people. This sort of behavior is bad enough when done discretely but it is extra humiliating when done in public. Forums are public places. I’m glad to say that the overwhelming majority of us on RedBubble do the right thing and play nice. Let’s work together to keep it that way. Support is available: Report bullying bubblemail or comments using the links provided or contact support@redbubble.com Jo

If you’re after tough but fair feedback on your art, photos, writing or other creative output, then pay a visit to the For Critique forum. Most of RedBubble operates on the basic principle of “if you like something, say so. if you don’t, keep quiet”. But the For Critique forum is different. It’s a great spot to ask for criticism, feedback, and specific advice on how to improve your skills. Post a small image or link through to your writing, design or artwork …and write a few words about any specific things you’d like people to consider when critiquing your work. Or, if you know a thing or two about a particular area, then why not give others the benefit of your considered opinion? No doubt others have done the same for you in the past.

What Makes You Think Your Art is Good Enough?
by Stephen MitchellWhat makes you think your art is good enough to upload to RedBubble? 1 Gut instinct? / This is the best way to know if your art, ...
What makes you think your art is good enough to upload to RedBubble? 1 Gut instinct? / This is the best way to know if your art, writing, or photography is good. For photographers, we simply know when the shot matches what we were trying to achieve. For writers, it’s when we write from the heart. For artists, and I mean people who manipulate binary-pixels as much as I mean painters etc, I imagine you know when your art has reached its point where it cannot be modified any further without ruining it. That’s right, ruining the final result. / Gut instinct tells you when you have just reached that pinnacle and achieved the art you imagined in the first place or saw through the view-finder. 2 Did someone in your family like the shot? / Trust me, I know from bad experience that relying on the opinion of family (to tell me what makes a GREAT shot) is never a good idea. As much as they believe in your artwork, they cannot see through your eyes. / I only upload a few distinctly better shots to RedBubble out of every few hundred. I might shoot between twenty and a hundred photographs from the one location, but I know almost immediately if it was a good shot or not. On occasion I only have to take one shot to get THAT shot, the one that gets shown to you, my friends and my family. What makes you think your art is good enough to have printed? 1. You received 1,000 ‘Oh, Nice!’ Comments ? / Nope, this is not a good enough reason. Your art needs to be an extension of who you are. Despite what you see here on RedBubble, your art should not be a popularity contest, nor a multitude of ‘nice’ comments. Much as I enjoy getting a few nice words about my work, I’ve recently learned that unless the person actually says something constructive, unique and interesting about the actual photograph … the comment may just be a stock answer to everything they see here. NOTE: OK, so sometimes it can be difficult to put into words what you like about some one else’s art, but at least say something unique. Yes, my photography of flowers have DOF, POV, macro-detail, lots of colour and are ‘hot’, ‘cool’, ‘wow’, and ‘whippitycrack’. Now tell me WHY you like it, WHAT it is that makes it good and HOW many you are going to purchase! :D 2. Only you can know if your art is worth selling on RedBubble. / Do you think someone would purchase it as a card? Or are you just showing off an image that you want others to consider before you commit to it? Ok, so we all do that occasionally. I’m not saying it’s wrong to upload the incomplete and unfinished, but this is RedBubble. It’s not just a community, forum and friend-making location: It’s an online print-shop. 3. Don’t be concerned with anyone’s opinion before presentation. / Upload those few shots you really believe capture what you were attempting. If you really believe the art is good, show it to the RedBubble world the whole internet. Because everyone online and offline is now going to see you and your art. RedBubble is a name, not a fortified location. Our comments, words, suggestions, responses, queries and ‘drool’ will be carbon copied across the planet and archived on the “WWW” Today I shot 5GIG of photographs in 5 hours. / I had a day in the Adelaide CBD, revisiting previous locations, visiting a few new places and discovering new things at each location that I did not see the first time! This added up to around 1,000 photographs. / ... I’ll be the first to admit that less than 200 are any good. / ... Less than 60 are very good. / ... I’ve uploaded only TWO of them to RedBubble. I might add a few more. / ... SEVEN have been loaded to my flickr gallery . All are getting lots of traffic, with very few comments. Just the way I like it. Each of those photographs got some pixel-manipulation. Yes, I do, when necessary. Each of those photographs were one of a several exactly the same … but I decided that one would serve the purpose I was looking for. / I didn’t ask anyone on RedBubble or Flickr if they would like to see it : I made that decision while perusing them on my 500GIG HD. A lot were shot purely because I like architecture, but many were shot because I figured they’d look good as a card or framed image. One of them is a test-image, to see the response/traffic rate. See if you can pick it. 4. Would you delete or replace a photograph if enough people said they didn’t like it? / Seeing as how so many of us rely on the comments of others to fulfill our online life, IF someone was to suggest a fault, change, modification or complete make-over of your art work, would you? I believe I might change an image. I have certainly changed my opinion on pixel-manipulation! I know I’d delete an image, but only from the RedBubble-database. I’ve done that several times. Where’s your thoughts on this? You’ll notice I rarely make comments on other people’s art. There is a LOT of great work on RedBubble. I just don’t have the time to tell you. Anyhow, you know your work is good. Or you would never have taken the time to put it on RedBubble …. right?

I’m not big on words, and to be honest reading endless forum threads just bores me. A quote I saw the other day is very relevant, I think “Saturation of information is the enemy of knowledge” and I think that basically sums up my thoughts on the matter. I look for the things that interest me, go straight to the heart of what I’m after, look up tutorials, and start doing. Here’s a link to the latest entry in the Seascapes Forum, which explains a little more about how to sell your work, I find it illuminating, since I’ve never been very good at promoting myself or my work. Bubblemail me if you’d like to be a “featured artist” and which photo you’d like to have included and why. Bubblemail me if you’ve got any suggestions you’d like to keep secret for the moment, Please leave comments here or in the forum if you’d like to get feedback on your work or the Group.

Hi everyone,, / For group hosts,, / below is a copy of a post i made in the Friends of Bubble forum, if you have time, please would you leave a comment, if you think this is a good idea..: i have a suggestion that may help hosts get to their groups overpage quicker,...as it is now,,when i want to go into our groups to moderate art work,,i have to go to ’’all my groups’’ section,,and somewhere down the page will be my groups,, Native American and Ancient Egyptian,,of course if you intend to keep joining groups, which most of us do,,then your own group gets shoved further down the list. Would it be a better idea to have a link in the ‘favorite feeds’ section on the Hosts Bubble page, taking us straight to our groups faster, so we can manage them quicker? I know i would use this option every time if it were there,, what do other Hosts think to this,,? thanks everyone :)

As much as we all hope to get people viewing our work and getting feedback on what we put our blood, sweat and tears into, it dosn’t always happen. I have a great concept that would share the love around. If everytime someone logs onto Red Bubble and visits a minimum of three people and leaves some constructive and insightful comment, it would leave everyone feeling good about their work and having some frame of reference to improve or enhance the way we market ourselves. So if you guys want to start a sought of pay it forward concept I think it would be great. / So the concept is. - if you get a comment on your work, go and view 3 other artists work and leave a comment with each of them. - if you have the time so we get the ball rolling, start leaving three messages everytime you log onto Red Bubble with or without recieving any messages/comments. - When you leave a comment you could suggest to have that person also view one of your images also in that comment. I’d love to know what you guys think of this idea so please leave some feedback for me to go on? / Anyway I shall go and start the avalanche with a pebble or the ripple in the pond. / Thanks all you bubblers out there for taking the time to read this. / Good luck to all and keep spreading the love. / All for one and one for all !!!
