This series of Mammatus clouds where taken on December 27 2004 just as a really big summer thunderstorm had formed over my house here in Perth, Western Australia. From what I read, the Mammatus clouds are caused by ice in the clouds becoming heavy and causing the cloud to sag. A very rare site! Taken with my 20D and 70-200 f/4. One of my first photos on the Shen Hao camera, taken round at Crail harbour in Fife. / I placed myself right on the water’s edge, looking down as the tide came in and superimposed 3 exposures on the one frame to give the effect of water lapping around the rocks like mist. I think the red rock is carboniferous sandstone.

Canon 10D / 17-40mmL Antelope Canyon is the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon formed over the course of millions of years by erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to wind erosion. Rainwater (especially during monsoon season) runs into the wash that Antelope Canyon is part of, picking up speed and sand as it rushes through the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors wider and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic ‘flowing’ shapes in the rock. Lower Antelope Canyon, called Hasdeztwazi, or “spiral rock arches” by the Navajo, is located a few kilometers away from the upper Antelope Canyon and is a more difficult hike. I took this picture a couple of years ago at the beach of Marina di Grosseto, Tuscany, Italy. / This is a fine example I think of how a fisheye lens can completely change the feeling of an ordinary scene. The subject is simply some surf on the seashore, captured from a distance of not more than a foot. / The original picture is a Fuji Velvia 50 Iso medium format slide. This is La Courtine, one of the most beautiful cliff I’ve ever seen. La Courtine is part of the amazing rocky coast around Etretat in Upper Normandy, France, altogether known as Les Failases d’Etretat. I took this picture last August, on a very windy – as usual over there – late afternoon. / I wanted to have the sea looking as much smooth as possible, but I was in full daylight, as it was around 19:30 hours. Even with the overcasted sky, and even full stopping down the lens, the exposure time was only 1/2 seconds, a too fast time to move the sea surface. Using a polarizer and a 8x ND filter I gained 5 more stops, obtaining therefore, with a slight over-exposure, 20 secs of exposure time. Finally, I used a graduated filter to darken the sky, while keeping a correct exposure on the cliffs and the sea. / This allowed me to give the sea surface a watercolour paint look, and I also obtained a slight movement in the clouds, thanks to the strong wind. Click Here Upper Antelope Canyon Is a spectacular petrified sand dune, created by wind, water and sand, presenting a sculptured masterpiece. / My Navajo Indian guide was lovely and explained many of the legends associated with this area. All who have seen this gigantic stump-like formation, known as devils tower, rising 1,265 feet above the Belle Fourche river, will understand why it inspired the imagination of the indians. They called it Mateo Tepee, meaning Grizzly Bear Lodge, and had several legends regarding its origin. According to the Klowas, who at one time are reported to have lived in the region, their tribe once camped by a stream where there were many bears.One day seven little girls were playing at a distance from the village and were chased by some bears. The girls ran toward the village and when the bears where about to catch them , they jumped to a low rock about 3 feet in height. One of them prayed to the rock, “rock have pity on us-rock save us”. the rock heard them and began to grow higher, pushing itself upwards. Pushing the children higher and higher out of the reach of the bears. When the bears jumped at them, they scratched the rock , broke their claws and fell back upon the ground. The rock continued to push the children upward into the sky while the bears jumped at them. The children are still in the sky, seven little stars in a group (the pleiades). according to the legend, the marks of the bears claws could be seen on the side of the rock.

by GlobalphotosUpper Antelope Canyon The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tse’ bighanilini, which means “the place where water runs through rocks.” Upper Antelope is at about 4,000 feet in elevation and the canyon walls rise 120 feet above the stream bed. Though dry most of the year, Antelope Canyon runs, and sometimes floods, with water after rains. It is the water, slowly wearing away the sandstone grain by grain, that has formed the beautiful and graceful curves in the rock. A long time ago someone dropped a few massive boulders into a picturesque turquoise pool near Denmark/Western Australia. Today these rocks are called Elephant Rocks and are part of the William Bay National Park.
