  • One of my first photos on the Shen Hao camera, taken round at Crail harbour in Fife. / I placed myself right on the water’s edge, looking down as the tide came in and superimposed 3 exposures on the one frame to give the effect of water lapping around the rocks like mist. I think the red rock is carboniferous sandstone.

  • Canon 10D / 17-40mmL Antelope Canyon is the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon formed over the course of millions of years by erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to wind erosion. Rainwater (especially during monsoon season) runs into the wash that Antelope Canyon is part of, picking up speed and sand as it rushes through the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors wider and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic ‘flowing’ shapes in the rock. Lower Antelope Canyon, called Hasdeztwazi, or “spiral rock arches” by the Navajo, is located a few kilometers away from the upper Antelope Canyon and is a more difficult hike. • All who have seen this gigantic stump-like formation, known as devils tower, rising 1,265 feet above the Belle Fourche river, will understand why it inspired the imagination of the indians. They called it Mateo Tepee, meaning Grizzly Bear Lodge, and had several legends regarding its origin. According to the Klowas, who at one time are reported to have lived in the region, their tribe once camped by a stream where there were many bears. One day seven little girls were playing at a distance from the village and were chased by some bears. The girls ran toward the village and when the bears where about to catch them , they jumped to a low rock about 3 feet in height. One of them prayed to the rock, “rock have pity on us-rock save us”. the rock heard them and began to grow higher, pushing itself upwards. Pushing the children higher and higher out of the reach of the bears. When the bears jumped at them, they scratched the rock , broke their claws and fell back upon the ground. The rock continued to push the children upward into the sky while the bears jumped at them. The children are still in the sky, seven little stars in a group (the pleiades). according to the legend, the marks of the bears claws could be seen on the side of the rock.

  • It is not how it looked in the viewfinder but it is how I wanted it to look in the end. The process of creating photographs is one with endless possibilities between the accurate recordings and significant transformations through camera settings and post processing steps. There is no "right" way to do all this and all options are available – at least for the open minded. So we choose the shutter speed, set the aperture, widen the angle or zoom in, highlight some elements, darken others, sharpen somethings, blur others, saturate and de-saturate, blend and hide,... all which change and transform the raw photo into something interesting for the eye – at times even visual art. Here I tried to create a piece of work that resembled the reality but also transcended into new visual dimensions which could not be seen by the human eye on location – merely in my mind. The long exposure and various post processing steps made this possible. The raw material was captured on Havskåren, a tiny island in the Oslofjord by the Nøtterøy archipelago. I posted this because I liked how the composition turned out. I also love the colors – muted yet warm and inviting. Earth colors. I hope you enjoy this work as much as I enjoyed creating it.

  • Chimney Rock and the Ghost Ranch are probably going to be a recurring theme in this stage of my photographic journey. It is very hard to find a landscape location in New Mexico with more context. Perhaps even in all the American southwest. So, another entry, this one taken with a Pentax 645 medium format film camera. I’ve had this camera since February 2009 and have quite a bit of cash and sweat equity invested in it. I’ve lugged it and its lenses and flash attachment over many, many miles of desert terrain across four states and have spent a small fortune on film and processing and prints and scans, not to mention buying my own film scanner. And this is it, the one image that pleases me from the whole lot. To say that my medium format experiment is not going well is an understatement; however, this one shows me what might be if I can relearn the craft of film photography before it bankrupts me. And If there is to be just one, I am happy it occurred at Ghost Ranch. Pentax 645, Velvia 50 film, Pentax 45mm lens, settings not recorded.

  • Another study from Air, Water, Rock series This time taken at Crescent Head, one of the best places for coastal photography, there are so many different rock formations. I really like light and contrast here. It was taken late morning when the sun was up high, so it was very bright and the number of filters was used to slow down the exposure and to get the balance between the very bright areas and the shade. I hope it works. Thank you for looking, Please view large!
