  • Lennox Castle, a mental health institution abandonned in 1987.

  • The highways were packed on this trip home due to holidays. So, I decided to try something different and drove the 100+ miles from my home north of Atlanta to my folks house south of Macon using surface roads. No interstate expressways. The Atlanta part was interesting. It’s not like old highways were straight, but I’m pretty sure the city of Atlanta and the interstates that runs straight through downtown had broken it up even worse. It was a maze of poorly marked streets. It began to get dark by the time I got out of the city proper, but I took “0ld 341” just because I wanted to see what Culloden looked like since it was apparently named for the Scottish battlefield I had visited months before. In the twilight, I managed to take a long exposure of this lovely old gas station decaying along the side of a forgotten highway.

  • Captured on an Indian Reservation in New Mexico, I have always loved 49-51 Ford Coupe’s…rare, they make one of the best Kustoms ever…and if I coulda found the owner and had a tow truck, I would have towed this all the way back home to Colorado with me! What a scene…...processed in HDR…thoughts welcomed!

I’m broken now / But I have not forgotten the way it feels / To swallow rain like candy drops / And then to Stop And fervidly kiss / ...

This is based on a true story that never happened…:) I imagined being left….it inspired this…

  • I’m up to my old tricks again! I’m now truly hooked on the Forgotten Postcard concept. I went digging through my old photos today to find some that I wasn’t altogether happy with to see what could be done. Venice is one of those timeless, European cities. I haven’t had the best of luck photographing it as both times I’ve been there the weather has been horrid. This particular shot was pretty drab and boring. Hopefully it’s a bit more interesting now :)

  • Please support me and favorite this piece here too. Thank you / In an eternal sleep I lay with these blues of sorrow, you don’t love me anymore, I am now the flower of forgotten petals.

  • She rests among the mosses / A shrine of wood and wishes / In this quiet sunlit forest / She is peaceful, not forgotten. / Zazzle / DeviantART / - / a dryad-treestump maiden, who twisted into place, / my pencilling too messy, so wood flowed round her face. / And grasses grew around her, and roots twisted round her wrist, / and from the slender sapling behind her, rose a girl of leaves and mist. I rather liked the concept and the curvy way she posed, / so as soon as the tablet was mine again, a sketch on the screen arose… / It wasn’t quite abstract or anime, nor a gentle blushing bride / and so out of wood I carved her and let the paint decide, And the leaves spread out around her, as I sprinkled and I spun / And brown and green around her, the trees grew one by one. / The steps I saw quite clearly, but the details made me yawn / So I looked up ruins and flung dabs, until perspective was born. And moss and sunlight gathered and layers flowed and split / And the hours flew silently by, until I was forced to quit. / But the quiet woodland waited, and the headless idol watched / Until I woke this morning and added bark metallic and notched… And the trees sprang up behind, and the flowers crept over the steps / And the sun lanced through the trees and everywhere shadows crept… / Roses of orange and yellow were added on a whim / and in the offering bowl lies a lily blurred and dim. ‘Til at last I could not deny her, she had to have a head, / Although I tried to distract her by painting her fingers instead. / The shiny coins didn’t sway her, and empty was this wood, / until I shaped her a face and swept over her a hood. Then sprouted a few last flowers, and a twisting thorny vine / Along the lowest terrace, its thorns as dark as wine / But I’ve worked on this seven full hours and new ideas have grown, / So posting and moving on now, before my muse has flown.

  • This photograph was captured in the late fall on a very windy, cold, overcast day. The sun was just breaking through in the far off distance but subdued light gave the foreground a more melancholy feeling. Looking at this print transports me immediately back to this beautiful location. However, I just can’t help trying to envision all of the people who had called this house their home over the last century. This photo was taken handheld with a Canon EOS DSLR / EF 28-70mm f/2.8L lens at 58mm focal length, f/11 at 1/500 sec. The same view, taken in mid-summer Your comments are always welcome! © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist. • This evening I revisited this abandoned farmhouse in Pennsylvania Amish farm country, one more time. It was raining and becoming very foggy, but that only added to the incredible charm that I saw in this mysterious setting. I have photographed this unique location in every season and under many different weather conditions. I am trying to create a definitive record this very unusual place, focusing on the way it looks in different light and climatic conditions. This photograph was taken east of Clarkstown, Pennsylvania, from the junction of two dirt country roads, Upper Bartlow Road and Ridge Lane. More to follow… Eco-Thought • Wise use of our dwindling farmland is essential to the health of earth’s ecology. This is an Amish farm, where there is never any waste of nature’s gifts! Due to their religious beliefs, there is no electricity or motorized equipment used here at all. This is as “GREEN” as human beings can possibly be! Obviously, we cannot all live this way, but if we use this ideal as our reference, maybe we could all be a little smarter in the way we use our resources. This photo was just taken with a Canon EOS 10D camera body using a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L zoom lens set to 110mm. The shutter speed was 3/4 of a second at f/5.6. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release cable. FEATURED In “The World As We See It…” FEATURED In “Earth Keepers”
