The Pukeko, or New Zealand Swamp Hen is a member of the rail family, and is similar to other species found all over the world. It is one of the few New Zealand native birds to have flourished since the arrival of man, and can be found in almost any grassland area, especially in swampy locations. Groups will often be seen foraging for food in road-side areas. I have come to the conclusion that Pukeko are suicidal. I so often see them on the side of the road, dithering, darting backwards and forwards, looking for an opportunity to cross, only to come back later to see them squashed on the road. They seem to have no road sense at all. /
I’ve been spying on Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird ever since they made their nest in a bluebird box in my yard a few weeks ago. Although I watch behind camouflaged drapings, they seem to know I’m there and have become quite tolerant of my presence. The female in particular seems to be curious about my shenanigans and came really close to me, caterpillar in mouth, and just looked and looked in my direction before finally making her treat time delivery to the nestlings. When I used the flash, they seemed to be even more captivated and got bolder and bolder in their approach, wondering what in tarnation was going on behind that camouflage curtain. Oh, it’s been quite fun for all of us, the birds and me.
Raccoons are common throughout North America from southern Canada to Panama. Raccoons are one of the largest animals to have adapted well to human development. Suburban areas, and many large cities, have significant raccoon populations. Raccoons are skilled foragers who can thrive on garbage and pet food. They have been known to take up residence in attics and garages, and even to enter houses through “pet doors” in search of food. When confronted by humans or household animals, raccoons may be aggressive; urban raccoons tend to lose their fear of humans over time.

These tiniest of sandpipers are feeding on their long journey to Central America and even northern South America. Captured at Oyster Bay Regional Park on the east coast of Vancouver Island, Canada with a Nikon D300 and Nikkor 600 mm lens.
I found this Sandhill Crane at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island in Southwest British Columbia as he searched for scarce food during an unusually cold and snowy winter. D300, Nikkor f4 600 mm lens, ISO 400, f6.3, 1/320th.
A small flock of Doves converges on this park pathway to look for some seeds. It is truly winter… HDR and I/R image, with added birds and sun elements. So this is a bit of a three way tie between the techniques I used! HDR shot was with infrared filtration (on the camera, two filters, one NDX2, and one 80 Infrared) leveled in Photoshop where the color shift became purple, processed the HDR in Photoshop, added birds and sun. This is not ‘false color’ this is the color ‘shift’ the program gave it when processed in Photoshop. Anyone who uses Photoshop will (should) understand the automatic color shift that occurs with infrared images. This color shift is further enhanced when the HDR portion of the processing is performed.

All rights reserved Beautiful Art and Greeting Cards For Sale ~ Shop securely and view my collection here Meet Boodle! She is a beautiful Crested Swede Duck, a pet dearly loved by Jeremy and Jena, who I met near North Pole Alaska at Chena Lakes in 2007. They carry her on walks in a pet carrier, and when they are in a safe area away from dogs… they place her on the ground where she follows their sweet calls like a little puppy and swims in the lake! She is so darling! She isn’t Blue and she isn’t Black, she is brown, so I have been unable to locate any specific information on her breed. “As early as 1835, the Blue Swedish Duck was being raised by farmers in Pomerania, which back then was part of Sweden, thus the name. Swedish Ducks are one of the heartiest of all the breeds, with a calm disposition. They are active foragers. Their body type is very close to the Pekin duck with carriage being a little more upright. Adult weight is around 8 lbs for the drake and 7 lbs for the hen duck. Cockerels are males age 1 day to 12 months of age, cock is a male over 1 year old, stag is a male 5-11 months of age, pullets are females age 1 day to 12 months of age, hen is over 1 years old and straight run is a term for males and females mixed as they hatch and not separated. Generally 100 straight run chicks will give you 50 pullets and 50 cockerels as an average” / If you click on this link, here is an information source and excellent article on Care of Baby Chicks / Domestic Ducks Breed Index / For information and free materials contact United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service / Wikipedia List of National Birds Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / Shooting Date/Time 18 August 2007 16:31:57 / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/400 / Av( Aperture Value ) 10.0 / ISO Speed 400 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM / Focal Length 135.0 mm
Winter is long and can be hard on the mule deer in the valley of Jackson Hole. Fortunately some of the valley uplands are off limits to skiing and winter hiking to give the deer a place to winter without being disturbed. As the winter winds down, and some grasses start to show through on south facing slopes, the deer come to that exposed forage. This doe was watching the rest of her small herd closely, and looked as if she was debating on the grass she had found versus keeping up with them.
