This is a watercolor painting I still have that I did in college. My Dad would ask if he could come along on one of my hikes and the rock climbing that it required compelled me to say no he could not. Anyway it it planted the seed for the idea in this painting.

This was taking at the request of my mom who has this bowl of fake pears in it. She thought it would be a great still life on a card and promised to buy it! So I couldn’t resist making my mom happy and took the shot! I guess I take requests now =) LOL

today … we got the news … / the tests have come back … / and yes … we knew … we knew before the tests were done … / but now we have been told. / it is so. / the lump … / is / cancerous / and in a whirlwind of a moment life has changed – everything has changed – everything is upside down and inside out – the feelings are huge and profound and roll along like an avalanche – yet inside is an echoing, gaping hollow void, empty of anything! devoid and black, deafening with the silence yet a million voices scream and the mind chatter makes no rational sense … the mix-up and confusions … yet … somehow … everything is numb … / and / we look at each other, we look closely to see … do you look any different … do I? ... can you see? ... / ... how strange … all looks the same … your hands, your hair, your skin … we look around … and everything is as we left it … all is still in place … just like just a few short moments ago … all is the same … / but we look at each other again … / meet each other’s gaze … / ... / and … / in each other’s eyes we see … the whole world has changed … PS it is a dear friend’s mum we are speaking about here, and both have grown to mean so much to me over the many years that our lives have touched … and so I tried to write … write for my friend Featured in Art For charity 04.04.2009 What an honour! As I was growing up, my parents took us on trips up north in Wisconsin to a place called Door County. Door County is the peninsula at the north east side of the state. It’s filled with small harbor towns with names like Bailey’s Harbor, Fish Creek and Sister Bay. In the summer, each town with all it’s quaint shops was filled with visitors from all over the US. When we were there looking out on the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, it was hard to image it as a lake. If felt like the ocean to us…...and the towns reminded us of places we would read about in books on the east coast. / We had such wonderful times going there, but it was always just a visit. One week at the most. / I didn’t realize it at the time, but my mom had a dream. She wanted more than anything to live in Door County. She imagined a farm with a building that would house her Antiques and crafts to sell to the tourists. But my dad was not so keen on this idea. / When my dad passed away at the age of 64, I remember feeling very sad about his loss, but I never doubted that it all happened the way it did for a reason. He would have hated the process of getting really old. I know he wouldn’t have wanted to be a burden. So he went at the perfect time. All ten of his kids were out on their own and he was still able to work and keep busy. That day, when it was his time to go he had even swept the walk, one of his favorite tasks. I’m sure he was glad that he went after the walk was swept and not before. / A few years later my mom married a life long friend, a man who had always been a part of our family. / He never had children and he didn’t really have any family that he kept in touch with, so it was completely natural that we all became his family. I don’t think I realized the mastery of Gods Plan until I wrote the eulogy for my wonderful step dad. He was the one that was meant to make my moms dream come true. Together they found this sweet broken down farm and they lived there every summer for over 10 years. Even though the barn collapsed only a year after buying the place, I always saw it as lit from with in. There was a wonderful energy there. We all miss it more than we could say. But in looking through my photos I found this image of the barn, still standing. I’m not surprised that it turned out this way. With that shining light from with in. / I always let my heart guide me and for this, I am grateful!! /

Media pencil drawing coloured digitally, background created fro the original sepia drawing to resemble cork a little legend who wears peacock feathers in her hair…i wonder what her story is…i bet it’s fascinating….perhaps there’s a little bit of you and a little bit of me in her….i’d like to think so. art as therapy….definitely, this piece was therapeutic…... i was lost in 3 hours of whimsy when i created this between 11pm and 2am this morning…. it so pleased me to use peacock feathers, we have had a vase of them in mum’s house from as long back as i can remember…and below you will see a little picture of my mum when she was a little girl posing for a photo with her peacock feather fan…i have always loved this picture of my mum. From what I understand she is on her way to a dance, all dressed up in kimono as a dear little geisha… a red haired one with curls to die for…mum i hope you like this….dedicated to you with love … xxx So you see, that kimonos, peacock feathers and the love of beautiful adornments have been intriguing me my whole life, my mum is so creative and sews beautifully, and used to make a dresses for herself and me, she would be sure to purchase extra fabric to make me a little dress in a different style to hers, to bond us closer as mother and daughter…what a lovely thought / / My mum Sal with her peacock feather fan dressed up in kimono
