Wanted to put this one up because i like the way his legs seem so real and life- like despite the surreal setting – simple as that really.

This award winning photo was my own personal choice for the place of honor in our home: above the hearth. The photo was taken on a still, misty morning near Port Orford, Oregon, of a man walking his dog on the boulder strewn beach, with the hazy coastal mountains rising up in the background. It’s hard to imagine that it could get any more peaceful and inspiring than this, isn’t it? (Nikon D200, Nikkor DX 18-70 mm 3.5-4.5 ED Lens, Settings f/13.0, 1/640th, ISO 320, 70 mm)

Someone once wrote- One night a man had a dream. / He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from his life. / For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, / one beloning to him and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, / he looked back at the footprints in the sand. / He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. / He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. / This bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. “Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, / you’d walk with me all the way. / But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. / I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.” The Lord replied “My precious, precious child, I love you and would never leave you. / During your times of trial and suffereing, / when you see only one set of footprints in the sand, / it was then that I carried you.”

This shot was taken in the immense dune field between Lake Wau Wauka and Iron Prince Reef in the Howe Wilderness Zone, Croajingolong National Park. It is just near Cape Howe on the Victorian, New South Wales border where the coast line takes a dramatic turn north resulting in the sand building up on this rock flanked headland. On this particular day I had arisen an hour before dawn and witnessed the white dunes absorb all the predawn colours before a spectacular ocean sunrise had me chewing through my film in awe. I wandered around the huge dune field taking advantage of the morning light that emphasised the ripples in the sand. After some inclement weather this part of the dune field had dried out unevenly resulting in sand bands of differing moisture content being blown in alternate directions. Totally exhausted from it’s long journey (Grand Canyon to North Carolina), this duck just barely managed to drag itself onto the beach to rest. Note the similarities to this Duck spotted at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon: /

I went out today to get some shots and ended up walking up this rather steep sand hill (I could get fit if I keep this up). On the way back to the car I dropped my shutter release, but after backtracking for a while I finally found it. Thankfully, I didn’t have to climb this hill again to search for it.!!! / And to top that off, I almost sank in mud and nearly lost a shoe at another location…but that story is for another photo…. Title inspired by Frank Zappa. / / / / / /
