A dad and son play football on the beach in Grenada – What a wonderful place – One of the few places still left pretty much alone from tourism.
The Kirkwall Ba Game is one of the main annual events held in the town of Kirkwall, in Orkney, Scotland. It is one of a number of Ba Games played in the streets of towns around Scotland; these are examples of traditional football games which are still played in towns in the United Kingdom and worldwide. The two sides are the Uppies and the Doonies. Originally the side any individual played on was decided by whether he was born up or doon the gate, but with recent housing developments, this tends to be decided by family loyalties nowadays. Which side ferrylowpers (incomers) and people from the isles or rural areas take is either determined by the route taken on their first arrival in Kirkwall, by family influence, or by the side their friends play on. http://www.acornconcepts.com / http://www.virtualorkney.com

Buyer’s Booth Picture The 1966 FIFA World Cup was held in England from July 11 to July 30. England won the final, beating West Germany 4-2, giving them their first and as yet, only World Cup triumph, and notably the first controversial final match in the world cup history. London’s Wembley Stadium was the venue for the final, and a crowd of 98,000 crammed inside the famous stadium. Just 12 minutes had gone when Helmut Haller put West Germany ahead, but Geoff Hurst levelled just four minutes later. Martin Peters then put England ahead again in the 78th minute and England looked set to claim the title. However, the referee awarded a free kick to West Germany with one minute left, the ball was aimed goalward and Wolfgang Weber poked it across the line to level the scores at 2-2 and the game went to extra time. In the 98th minute Hurst’s shot hit the crossbar, bounced down into the goalmouth and the long running debate has gone on ever since on whether it did cross the line. In the last minute Hurst completed his, and the only ever, World Cup Final hat-trick, just as the crowd started to invade the pitch BBC commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme’s historic commentary has become one of the most famous sports related lines: “Some people are on the pitch. They think it’s all over.” (Hurst hammers the ball into the net) “It is now!”.

I could never figure out why we call their football soccer, and our football football. We actually don’t use our feet all that much except to punt or kick. GO RAMS! *This was inspired by Bluebaby’s 9 iron design.

The Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) is a sports stadium in Berlin. There have been two stadia on the site: the present facility, and one that was built for the aborted 1916 Summer Olympics. Both were designed by members of the same family, the first by Otto March and the second by his son Werner March. The current Olympiastadion was originally built for “Hitler’s” Summer Olympics in 1936 in the southern part of the Reichssportfeld (today Olympiapark Berlin). During World War II, the area suffered little damage. After the war, the United Kingdom military occupation used the northern part of the Reichssportfeld as its headquarters until 1994. Aside from its use as an Olympic stadium, the Olympiastadion has a strong footballing tradition. Historically, it is the ground of club Hertha BSC Berlin. It was also used for 3 matches in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. It hosted six matches, including the final, in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and was renovated for that reason. The German Cup final match is held each year at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

These days I spend every Friday and Monday night taking pictures of my grandson’s football team – the Williams Valley Vikings. On the night of 10/16/09 it was very cold and rainy in Pennsylvania, so it added a little more atmosphere to my pictures. Steam and mist arose from the field wherever they went. I’m posting a few of the team photos in honor of the Viking win against Juniata. I was using my zoom lens, but between the rain and the mist the pictures look foggy.
