This Akha boy had waited all day for his mother to return from her rice fields. She has brought him a present, along with a basket full of wild and cultivated vegetables for her family. She wears her traditional headdress, decorated with silver, baubles and trinkets, all day while she works in her fields, and while she is sleeping. Akha women in the hills of Northern Thailand work from dawn to dusk. The men once did heavier work like clearing forest, or hunting wild animals, but with the forest cover almost gone, there isn’t anything left to chop or kill.
