The Trevi Fountain – Rome © Loredana Crupi 2007 / A classic example of the excesses and beauty of the Baroque The first attempt to unite architecture, sculpture and painting in such a manner that they make a beautiful whole (un bel composto). The iconic Trevi fountain popularized by the film Roman Holiday is the largest of all baroque fountains in Rome. Rumor has it that before its potrayal on Roman Holiday, it was relatively insignificant on the tourist circuit – but one would never guess that based on the throngs you find here even during the off season. After having initially visited the fountain during the day, had to stop by again during night just to take this photograph. In 19 B.C. pure water was discovered at the three roads (Tre Vie), and an aquaduct was built bringing the water into Rome, some 20 kilometers away. The fountain has a rich history of change, destruction, rebuilding until today …...perhaps the most beautiful fountain in Rome. Each day some 3,000 euros are tossed into the fountain in hopes of returning to Rome (collected each evening).

Rumour has it that anyone who throws a coin into the waters of the fountain is guaranteed to return to the Eternal City. The Trevi Fountain takes its name from its location (it is found at the intersection of three roads … hence tre vie). Often crowded with tourists juggling for a good position to contemplate, sketch or just take their souvenir photograph.
The great fountain by the Pisanos in the centre of Perugia is one of the masterpieces of European medieval sculpture. Here it is seen against the background of the cathedral in the wonderful lighting the city has provided for it after dark.

There are 25 bas-relief diptychs in white Grecian marble around the lower basin of Perugia’s wonderful main fountain. They are regarded as some of the earliest masterpieces of Italian medieval sculpture, created by the Pisanos, father and son, in the late 1270s. In this courtly pair of images, a knight and a lady represent May, the month for love and for hunting.
There are 24 statues in white Carrara marble around the upper basin of Perugia’s wonderful main fountain. They are regarded as some of the earliest masterpieces of Italian medieval sculpture, created by the Pisanos, father and son, in the late 1270s. This one, probably by Giovanni Pisano, portrays St Benedict of Norcia, founder of the Benedictine Monastic Order, handing the Rule of the Order to his first disciple. Notice also the bronze protome forming the water-spout underneath: here it is in the form of a gazelle’s head.
